Bette Davis 30s Katherine Hepburn 40s Liz Taylor 50s
are probably the top 3 american ones at least

For straight women, I'd say Audrey Hepburn.
For gay women, I'm guessing Katharine Hepburn.
For gay men, probably Bette or Joan.
For straight men, I don't know, maybe Marilyn Monroe?

Is this another stealth thread for that cross-eyed whore Norma Shearer?
Because I've had about enough of that cunt!

Too bad Jean Harlow didn't make the cut.

The beloved Doris Day in the 1950's and 1960's. One of the biggest box office stars of all time.

When they had that magazine poll in the 1930s to determine who were the King and Queen of Hollywood, people always remember that Clark Gable was elected the King (he kept that nickname for the rest of his life), but few people remember Myrna Loy was elected the Queen.

For gay men and gay women, don't discount Miss Barbara Stanwyck.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 17, 2021 7:13 PM |
Marilyn Monroe

Beulah Bondi!

Zasu Pitts!

Stanwyck is pretty spectacular. Ball of Fire, The Lady Eve, Double Indemnity. Christmas in Connecticut. For those alone she deserves a place at the top. But she'll never get the attention of the Hepburns and Monroes. I also have a soft spot for Ingrid Bergman.

Carole Lombard....maybe?
Bette Davis was probably the most admired.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 17, 2021 7:48 PM |
Carole Lombard was loved by all.
Beautiful, funny and full of life.
Too bad about that pesky mountain.

Lucille Ball should be in this conversation.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 17, 2021 8:37 PM |
Lucille Ball was still "modeling", and "entertaining" studio big wigs, bankers, and other backers during that time. Perhaps she was beloved by one of them during the golden age?

I don't know if Barbara Stanwyck was the most beloved by the public but she's my favorite from the Golden Age.

What you people are evaluating is who is "beloved" one is 60, 70 80 years after they were in movies, which not nearly how they were "beloved" when the movies actually came out. How ridiculous is THAT?

I bet Joan Blondell was beloved by her fellow co-stars. She seems like she would have been a lot of fun.

Norma Desmond

Helen Lawson

Judy Garland

You realize this syntax makes zero sense.

Shirley Temple
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 18, 2021 11:48 PM |
Marilyn Monroe. And I say that as someone who never got her appeal and felt she was ridiculously over hyped. I don't understand it but she is probably number 1.

I came here to say Carol Lombard too, I never read a bad word about her and that she was a great girl.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 19, 2021 12:33 AM |
Sporty Stanwyck liked Carol Lombard because she was a varsity basketball player in school.
