"When a certain gentleman arrived from Rome, I wore the dress...", "...And I stayed home!"
What does this mean? Why would they have only one dress to wear between the two of them? If it's because they were poor, why is someone from Rome visiting them? Are we supposed to know who this certain gentleman is supposed to be?
Did the one without the dress have to stay home in the nude?
I've never understood this lyric.

They’re referring to anal.

They probably only had one fancy nice dress (this used to be more common pre-NAFTA and pre-Internet), and my guess is the gentleman is the Pope.

The first pope to visit the US was Paul VI in 1965, a decade later, so it must have been meant to refer to someone else.

They clearly say in the line just before the dress line that they "share" everything, and they then give the dress as an example. The gentleman from Rome is just the date for the fancy dress and "Rome" was easy to rhyme with "home".
