He's the British Ryan Phillippe. Both excelled at playing cold hearted types. Neither can play Everyman to save their lives.

I admired in "Anna Karenina" that he had no qualms about looking plain, homely and dull as Aleksei Karenin. His acting talent, to use a cliche, leaped from the screen, too.

An aside, but I was mesmerized by "Anna Karenina" 2012. It was panned, but the production design, costumes and editing were superb. I liked the gimmick of changing the sets on film.

Still, with 45 minutes to go I was getting antsy for Anna to jump in front of that train.
