New York in the '70s: The Photos

It was dark, gritty, dirty, dangerous, but most of all… fun and mysterious. And exciting. Todays transplants would never have survived back then.

It’s missed.

It was fabulous. Oh the memories. Before the theatre district turned into Disneyland and hookers lined the sidewalks. So much fun. Dangerous? Yes but I think it’s more dangerous today because people are crazier. The city had such personality back then. Now? Not so much.

R1 If you walked down the street with a sense of purpose nobody bothered you, not even on 42nd Street.

That was a great photo gallery piece. Except I think they got the year really wrong in No. 34. ;)

NYC still got tons of transplants in the 70s. It always has and always will.

Soooo gross. It’s getting like that now. There’s like, low income housing in my building and many homeless guys in the forecourt of Hudson Yards I have to step over on my way to Whole Foods.

I did not leave Indiana and my dad did not buy this apartment for me as a gift after I finished grad school to move to NYC and intern as a writer the to deal with all the animals come out at night - whores, skunk pussies, buggers, queens, fairies, dopers, junkies, sick, venal. Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets in the form of a new Republican mayor and a new Republican governor.

Nice try at parody r6 but everybody - transplant or not = hates all the rot. And they did in the 70s too.

R6 is stealing from the Taxi Driver script

CBGBs in the 1970s. I didn't get there until the early 1980s, but I made sure I got to pee in the legendary filthiest bathroom in NYC.
