Who sabotaged Lindsay Wagner's career?

Lindsay should have been a big actress in movies coming out of The Bionic Woman but, for some reason, she faded away when the show ended. She was beautiful, a good actress and the public loved her. It doesn't make any sense other than someone in the industry sabotaged her. She should have had Meg Ryan's career at least.

She kept her looks and figure as she got older, and she never went crazy like others from her era.

She is beautiful. She has a type of face like Helen Slater and Brit Marling that I just adore.

by Anonymousreply 1December 5, 2021 4:19 PM

Great voice, too.

by Anonymousreply 2December 5, 2021 4:21 PM

I remember her in the miniseries Scruples and Princess Daisy. I don't remember anything else she did not connected to The Bionic Woman.

by Anonymousreply 3December 5, 2021 4:33 PM

I think she had minor roles in a few big-screen movies (one of them a Sylvester Stallone movie if I remember correctly) but other than that, she mostly stuck to TV movies and miniseries. I agree, OP, she was a very good actress and a favorite of mine growing up. Would have loved to see her move on to better and bigger things in her career but it just didn't happen. Perhaps she didn't want it that badly? Who knows.

She's Meemaw in "Christmas at the Ranch," a gay (well, lesbian) Christmas movie.

Is she gay?

by Anonymousreply 6December 5, 2021 8:21 PM

I sabotaged it, sugah.

"Is she gay?"

Nope. Back in the Eighties or Nineties, she hooked up with some male New Age guru and was with him for a long time (not sure if she still is). I heard it straight from the mouth of the guru's ex-girlfriend!

She made a mint off those Ford commercials. (And so did Ford).

Wagner also has an amazing likability, sort of like Sandra Bullock. But she was also very good as an ice princess in Paper Chase. I also get the feeling she wasn't much into being a star or even an actress. She did things but never was expecting superstardom.

by Anonymousreply 10December 7, 2021 10:00 PM

I always got her confused with Julie Hagerty.

Julie is another actress who had her career sabotaged. How did she go from starring in one of the most successful comedies in history to disappearing overnight?

Was Scruples the mini series where someone got whacked across the face with a bouquet of roses and the thorns drew blood?

by Anonymousreply 12December 7, 2021 10:05 PM

R12 Sure

by Anonymousreply 13December 7, 2021 10:08 PM

Lyle sabotaged it.

Sibling rivalry, you know. In fact, that’s why he spelled his name differently.

True fact.

I remember reading sometime after BW was canceled that Lindsay made a fortune through her investment in some pharmaceutical company. Can't remember the details but the gist of the story was that she no longer had to worry about money.

There was also a story about her son getting sick from eating birthday cake. She did not allow her kids to eat sugar but one day when he was invited to a birthday party at some kid's house, he asked her if he could have a piece of birthday cake like the other kids. She relented and said okay but when he got home, he was sick from it because his system was not used to digesting sugar. Don't know if that was true, of course, but I just recall reading about it.

Alex - Who is Lindsay Wagner?

She became queen of the "lousy but fun made-for-TV movies" market. There are worse career trajectories.

She was Queen of the TV movies in the 1980s, until Donna Mills claimed the crown. Her acting career was capped with Jamie marrying Steve. I think she had a solid run as an actress, from Paper Chase to TV acclaim.

And at 72 she looks great.

by Anonymousreply 21December 7, 2021 10:27 PM

Love her.

by Anonymousreply 22December 7, 2021 10:37 PM

She probably got sick of the Hollywood treadmill, especially as she got older and good parts became hard to come by. If she was financially set, why keep running?

by Anonymousreply 23December 7, 2021 10:48 PM

Because she was the same as this actress and there is only room for one of them.

While I wouldn't say she was a bad actor, her performances always seem rather low energy and lacking in intensity. While that certainly has its place, I can't imagine it would have allowed her to transition from tv to films after BW. Not to get all Barbara Thorndyke, but Wagner along with Meredith Baxter, Jaclyn Smith, and Valerie Bertinelli were rather limited as actors and hence their success in tv movies and inability to transition to feature films at a time when there was a clear delineation in status between the two.

I attended the same large high school as Lindsay Wagner(Sam Elliot, too). David Douglas H.S. in Portland, Oregon. Different years, but we had the same drama coach/director, Ms. Rosemary Reynolds. Ms. Reynolds was very serious about the craft and didn't over influence performances, which was great. You could tell that she loved her job all those years. She had an 8x10 photo of Lindsay hanging behind her office desk.

I have a family member who owned a cabin on Mt. Hood that neighbored one owned by Lindsay Wagner. We never met her, though.

by Anonymousreply 27December 8, 2021 12:03 AM

Now you’re talking about someone whose career I know about (and love)!

Lindsay has had a really long career, 50 years, and continues to act. It’s true that she didn’t make it “big,” but most actresses would kill for her career and longevity.

She is big into the body and mind and has been for years. This occupies much of her time nowadays. The link is to this portion of her website. She was very sick as a teenager which started her interest in her health.

I may be able to answer any questions anyone has. I admire the fact that she hasn’t gone the plastic surgery route, too.

She was a model turned actress with The Paper Chase as her first big part. Like most models who turn to acting she relied heavily on a “look” like Bacall. She comes across as cold probably because she can’t loosen up camera. You can tell from her acting, too, that she didn’t have much, or very little, vocal training.

by Anonymousreply 29December 9, 2021 1:53 AM

She was pretty good in the Bionic Woman...I think she won an Emmy

by Anonymousreply 30December 9, 2021 10:44 PM

She did r30. It was the second season episode where Jamie’s bad lookalike got addicted to the drug that gave her bionic like powers. It was a great performance.

by Anonymousreply 31December 9, 2021 11:13 PM

Op, she was a prolific lead in network TV movies and mini-series through the early-mid 1990s.

Example: The highly rated CBS miniseries Scruples.

by Anonymousreply 32December 9, 2021 11:17 PM

I think it was suspicions about the death of Natalie Wood.

by Anonymousreply 33December 9, 2021 11:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 34December 9, 2021 11:49 PM

She never seemed ambitious, which is part of her appeal. Plus, at that time TV folk stayed in TV. The Bionic Woman identity alone would have barred her from being cast in anything but ensemble Smokey and the Bandit II-type fare.

by Anonymousreply 37December 10, 2021 12:44 AM

She has a 3-year max on marriages

by Anonymousreply 38December 10, 2021 12:45 AM

I think her first major feature film after "The Paper Chase" was Sylvester Stallone's "Nighthawks" in 1981. It was a modest hit, but she was totally wasted in a nothing role, and soon went back to TV.

by Anonymousreply 39December 10, 2021 12:50 AM

Her attitude. I know she was very outspoken about her disliking her role on Bionic Woman. She suffered from anxiety and was a difficult actress.

by Anonymousreply 40December 10, 2021 1:11 AM

Which did better in the ratings, The Bionic Woman or The Six Million Dollar Man?

by Anonymousreply 41December 10, 2021 1:41 AM

R41, I'm going strictly on memory here (so someone correct me if I'm wrong) but I believe BW was a huge hit out of the gate, which wasn't surprising given that the spinoff only happened because of the overwhelming audience reaction to Wagner's first appearance in the role on SMDM. When her character was killed off, ABC got snowed with tons of fan mail, so much so that they decided to revive the character and spin her off into her own series. Also, as a result of the show's mammoth success, Lindsay was paid a huge amount of money, so much so that I recall reading reports at the time that it caused some bad blood between her and Lee Majors, who may not have been making as much (or maybe the same amount, who knows).

Despite the show's success, however, ABC canceled it after one and a half seasons (not sure of the reason why, though there was at least one story saying something about a contentious relationship between Lindsay and Fred Silverman, who was head of the network). It was then picked up by NBC, moved to Saturday nights, where it only lasted one season.

by Anonymousreply 42December 10, 2021 2:43 AM

Oh, and sorry, R41, with regard to your actual question, I'm not sure which show did better in the ratings. As I said, BW was a huge hit initially and perhaps by the time it premiered in the spring of 1976, SMDM may have been fading a bit by that time, giving BW the edge. I can't recall with any clarity on that front I'm afraid.
