This the same kind of thing that questionable politicians do in South America? It sounds like some sort of a plan for insurrection and dictatorship of the state. Frankly it’s truly bizarre.

OP, it sounds disturbing if you just read the headline, but if you go further you see that ~22 states already have these state guards that report to the governor and not the federal government, and Texas is one of them.

Of course DeSantis is proposing this as yet another asinine Republican governor political game, but it's not really anything to be that alarmed over. In lieu of the current situation with the state National Guards and anti-vaxxers, it's just another way they can be defiant to impress the Republican base, prolonging the pandemic for all of us.

Other states have these same "civilian military" groups and they seem to mostly date back to WWII. Florida's disbanded after the war when it was no longer needed, but the governor can still create a civilian militia if he wants, and that's what DeSantis is suggesting.

DeSantis is claiming this group is going to be useful during natural disasters but this is not a man known for telling the truth.
