What shoes do you wear as house slippers?

I currently wear sandal slides from Target. You know, the trashy kind that look like they should be worn with basketball shorts or pajama bottoms. I kinda want to get some clog Birkenstock’s to replace them as my house shoes. What should I do? And what do you wear?

by Anonymousreply 144December 9, 2021 12:49 AM

clog Birkenstocks

are you a lesbian?

by Anonymousreply 1November 29, 2021 6:59 AM

I used to get the Target version of Birkenstock's for $18.99 or whatever, but they stretched out quickly and got too loose to walk around in safely. Now I have actual Birkenstock's in suede because they're softer. I can wear them year round with or without socks. Very comfortable and they can be worn outside to let the dog out, minor garden stuff, etc. They also stretch somewhat, but I can take them to the store to get new holes punched in. Love them.

Birkenstock Boston in wool felt.

by Anonymousreply 16November 29, 2021 9:40 AM

The standard issue Birkenstock Arizonas have been my go-to shoes/slippers for 10+ years. They kinda shape to your feet after a while and as someone mentioned above they're actually proper shoes so you can just wear them out in the warmer months. Also great for wide-footed hobbits like myself.

A friend swears crocs are the most comfortable shoes she's ever worn.

by Anonymousreply 17November 29, 2021 9:42 AM

I keep a bunch of slipper booties in a box on my shoe bench at the front door. it feels so relaxing to ditch the shoes when I come home. Added bonus is they are washable and you can offer a clean pair to guests, if they want.

If my feet really feel cold, I have a pair of Uggs slides that some relative gifted me many years ago.

And Crocs are awesome dog walking shoes, especially on rainy days. Not sure I'd wear them for any other purpose--maybe gardening if I actually gardened.

My house shoes are polo Ralph Lauren flip flops and they’re old, I have 2 pair

by Anonymousreply 25November 29, 2021 11:52 AM

I still have a really old pair of Adidas, like 11 years old, that I keep around because they are so broken in. They're easy to step into. I've still bought other newer pairs of shoes since then, but I keep these around for doing basic stuff like taking out the trash or checking my mail.

by Anonymousreply 26November 29, 2021 11:56 AM

My house shoes are none. I have fucking Plantar Fasciitis and shoes make it worse.

by Anonymousreply 27November 29, 2021 11:56 AM

I bought a pair of Ugg’s because there was so much talk about how they were the best and most comfortable slipper. For $100+ they were no better than my slippers from Costco and definitely a lot cheaper then Ugg’s.

by Anonymousreply 28November 29, 2021 12:05 PM

A pair of athletic shoes for the purpose, that I seldom wear outside the house. I have a pair of moccasins as well for the same, and flip-flops for summer. With tile floors everywhere it can be cool in the few winter months, but even in the warm months I'm not in the habit of un-shoed feet for any length of time. It's looked on as a bit odd to not wear shoes in the house and now I'm more comfortable doing the same.

I wear fake rubber Birkenstocks. Used to wear Adissage slides but I noticed the nubs from the Adissage slides coming off on my floor so now I only wear those at the pool. I need some support - can no longer wear just socks on the floor.

Socks only, sometimes barefoot when out of the shower or just haven't gotten around to putting socks on yet, but we live in a semi-rural area and there are enough big spideys hanging around on the floor just waiting to be kicked that I try to have socks on, just in case.

Dad used to wear slippers like the ones at r56 except they had a little leather tie on the top, so looked a little more like a moccasin.

[quote] In the evening you're walking around and then getting into bed...bringing all the dirt and germs from the ground with you.

Right. The pearl clutchers who can't handle people wearing shoes in the house - would you rather get the fecal germs from the bathroom on your bare feet, or a pair of shoes?

by Anonymousreply 82November 30, 2021 10:48 AM

Fecal coliform is all over the place whether you go barefoot or not, r82.

[quote]“We, as a society, are literally bathed in feces,” Tierno said. “Wherever a man touches, there are feces and fecal organisms present.” Even to focus on toilets is to sort of miss the point: One study compared surfaces in the bathrooms and kitchens of 15 homes and found that the toilet was among the least bacteria-laden places tested, likely because people tend to more vigorously and regularly clean their toilets.

I turned 65 and my doctor told me, with my neuropathy, that I should not go barefoot in my home. No change as I wear a pair of Vans all the time. I have a dozen or so custom wide suede slip ons. The custom Vans website is awesome and they fly their shoes out of Shendong. Easy peasy.

by Anonymousreply 87November 30, 2021 2:01 PM

So many of these options don't provide much arch support.

I've tried them all and what works best for me are lined Crocs in colder months and unlined Crocs or Crocs' flip flops in warmer months. Believe it or not, they have the best arch support for "non-shoes" and when you get older, you can't walk around in bare feet or even in just socks. there just isn't enough skin on the soles of my feet.

by Anonymousreply 94November 30, 2021 8:59 PM

I'm starting to think arch support is not necessary for all people.

[quote] Dr. Ray McClanahan ... compares the arch of the foot to an architectural archway. These arches do require support, yes, but not under the arch to hold it up like many shoes do. They require good, strong bases at either end that give the support to the entire arch.

R92, then you are unaware of aerosol fecal clouds that are crested with flushing. Women get their purse bottoms covered in this fecal sediment when they put their purses on the floors of public bathrooms. I remember Joy Behar being pissed off when The View did a segment on this and her purse was swabbed and discovered to be covered in shit. It's not all about the hand washing.

by Anonymousreply 108December 1, 2021 3:40 AM

R92 Okaaay, frau. No sane woman puts her purse on the floor of a public bathroom, except dumb cunts on the View. No sane woman takes her purse to her own bathroom either. Thirdly, there is something called a toilet lid, which I was taught to close before every flush precisely to prevent aerosolized shit and piss from floating about. Yes, we all wear shoes in public bathrooms. Some of us don’t at home because we keep our bathrooms clean at all times. If you have a dirty bathroom, you’re dragging filth everywhere with or without shoes.

FFS, arch support is a problem for those with a problem of arch support.

And a problem of no one else.

The rest of the world worries about arch support as frequently as they do about having too many drive-in vaults packed to the rafters with gold bricks.

by Anonymousreply 111December 1, 2021 8:12 AM

by Anonymousreply 114December 1, 2021 10:59 AM

No need to get classist, R112. FIne shoes do. But the subject was house slippers, including it seems slides, flip-flops, moccasins, fuzzy flopsy bunny shoes, etc. Not opera pumps, not business shoes, not chic driving shoes for your inner Tom Ripley, not shoes with delightfully elongated and curved toes for a Venetian masked ball.

My footwear was made in Europe, if that's good enough for you and your international trade concerns, and if it's not I leave you to lecture about China in your weird looking Huntsman bespokes. And no, my moccasins do not have arch support, nor my fucking flip-flops (though yes, the flip-flops likely are from China.)

The point was that everyone asking "Oh, those slippers look nice, do they have arch support?" are trying to make their fallen arches everyone else's problem. Not all of us need arch support in our flip-flops.

L.L. Bean's "Wicked Good Moccasins" for at least two decades now. Yes, I live in New England.

by Anonymousreply 124December 5, 2021 11:44 AM

by Anonymousreply 126December 5, 2021 12:03 PM

Bare feet. All of the time.

by Anonymousreply 127December 5, 2021 2:56 PM

Bare feet is only good if you live in a hot climate or have heating cranked up. The rest of us wear slippers.

by Anonymousreply 128December 5, 2021 2:58 PM

I don't wear anything unless it's been like 15 degrees and overcast for days and I don't want to turn my heat on - I'm in an older building with plaster walls and tons of windows with sun streaming in. I rarely open my radiators as I get enough ambient heat.

If you keep your core body warm your feet and hands will be fine. My wood floors don't get cold either - though I do have carpets overing much of it. If you move around you'll be warmer and if you have a throw that should be enough when you're sitting on your ass watching whatever.

Slippers - just something else to have to wash and dry.

by Anonymousreply 129December 5, 2021 4:09 PM

Or if you're not a big sissy, R128.

by Anonymousreply 130December 5, 2021 4:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 131December 5, 2021 4:12 PM

Though my mother might have bought me some over the years. Is that it? Are you all mothers?

by Anonymousreply 132December 5, 2021 4:14 PM

R132 I certainly am not a mother but I know tons of men who don't have kids who wear slippers. Guess that's what comes of living in a Northern Europe country?

Apologies, R128. If I knew you lived in Northern Europe I wouldn't have been critical.

I only like to rag on Americans.

I noticed watching various SKAM series (largely European) that some of the teenagers wore slippers but it seemed weird to me.

I am back living in the U.S. midwest looking after my nearly deaf and serious dementia suffering mother, but I lived in California for 25 years (both SF and LA).

I live in Houston and even socks are too hot in the summer and some kind of indoor footwear is only needed a few times in winter if at all. Bare feet, it is. Some people might wear flip flops around the house I suppose but most everyone I know and my family all go barefooted.

It's usually socks, but my feet have an attraction to anything wet or gooey. It's a feeling of revulsion/disgust I avoid with moccasins. Any lining holds funk, so I stick to leather.

I wear these year-round. I like that they slip-on and cork is naturally antimicrobial. They are durable enough to wear outside and I wear wool socks with them in winter.

Your floors are wet and gooey?

Going barefoot is uncivilized.

Even civilized homes have Weiner dogs that scoot across carpet because they can't reach back there. They never licked their own balls....so sad. Wear shoes, Fuckos..

Work from home in front of standing desk so wear these & around house during winter; otherwise, regular Arizona or barefoot

[quote] When it’s very cold or I have to step outside to get the mail, firewood, etc. I have fleece lined suede moccasins from LL Bean. Otherwise barefoot.

Yup, LL Bean slippers keep my feet toasty warm during endless mind numbing zoom calls. They’re the best.
