Everyone in this photo is now gone, and it hurts me to think how much time has passed.
This is a photo of the cast of SOAP (1977 TV Series). It just occurred to me that everyone in this photo is now dead. It's surreal and painful to realize and to think how much time has passed and how quickly. They all look so alive in this photo. 1977 isn't that long ago. I still have a huge crush on Richard Mulligan. I think he's unbelievably sexy in SOAP and just adorable. I just rewatched the series on DVD during a pandemic binge viewing. I miss these actors.
Does anyone have any memories or stories about the actors in this photo? Stories on any, especially Richard Mulligan would be deeply appreciated.
I'm also hoping to hear from anyone who has suddenly realized how much things are changing and how quickly time is passing. What inspired your revelation?

You must be ancient to consider 1977 “not that long ago”. Are you kidding me? Almost 44 years is a very long time. Stop living in the past and learn to enjoy the present.

I know how you feel, OP. Sorry I never watched SOAP. But I'm a child of the 70s. I was a teen in the 80s. And it makes me feel very nostalgic watching my favorite shows of the time. And to see me heroes then young and attractive. Now they are old people. There's nothing wrong with that. It's better to age than to die young. But it's still odd to realize how much time has passed and it went so quickly.

I love the show and still think Jessica Tate is one of the best written characters in TV history. Just so lovable. It is the only show in which a female lead who “all the men fall for” actually seems to make sense.
Take notes, SJP.

I always assumed handsome Robert Guillaume was gay because his character always seemed rather light in the loafers and a tension like a gay guy. Marrried twice and 5 kids.

OP the year 1977 was 44 years ago.
Based on the average US lifespan of 79 years that 44 number represents 55% of a US lifespan.
It would be a shock that all 5 would still be alive today (or even a majority of the 5 actors).
The 3 guys all have grey hair in that 44 year old photo. The 2 gals were probably coloring their hair at the time.

I didn't realize it at the time but Robert Mandan was one hot daddy, with classic BDF. At his age in the picture, he's now the kind of person I would lust after, yesterday I would have viewed as an authority figure.
But OP, don't worry. Everyone in the picture all lived good, long lives, and were highly celebrated people in their day.

It's 45 years ago. More than one-third of the U.S. population wasn't alive then.

I don’t mind getting older but the thing I never thought about was that my friends would die before me. I’m 58 and my friends from my 20s and 30s are dead. I spend more time alone than I ever planned — very difficult to make friends when you’re older. I don’t know why that is.

Ok, let's talk a little about "Soap." It was a funny show with an incredibly talented cast. It was considered quite controversial. There was Billy Crystal's character Jodie, who was transitioning into a woman but halted the procedure after his closeted football player lover leaves him. Later he turns straight and asks a woman to marry him. I wonder how all that would go down today? And then there was the storyline where the teenage Billy starts sleeping with his teacher. And the one where the uber slut Corinne is in love with a priest and tries to seduce him (eventually he leaves the priesthood to marry her). It was pretty hot stuff for the time. The show went off abruptly without a proper finale. I wish there had been one. It probably would have been really something.

Mulligan was tiresome here and in the unwatchable "Empty Nest". The other men in show were more worthy of a crush. Guillaume had a gay son whom I believe died of AIDS. The relationship between his character and Helmond's was one of the real anchors of the show. And yes, this was a million years ago.

I had a big shock about the passing of time when I realised that I finished university more than half my lifetime ago. I graduated at 21 and suddenly I’m in my mid-forties (but look 22). How can that have happened?
If I die at the same age as my dad did, I’ll be gone in 16 years. That really doesn’t seem like a long time.

I loved Katherine Helmond in ANYTHING: Her looks, her voice, her sublime acting style, her hair. She seemed like she'd have been fun to work with and to know. She had that great touch of whimsy to her personality and acting ability that lent itself so well to afield projects she was also in, such as 1975's ABC TV-movie "Lizze Borden" where she played sister Emma to Elizabeth Montgomery's Lizzy.
Yes, middle-aged now, I'm becoming very aware of how the people and memory fabrics of my younger years' pop-culture reality are dying off. I think that for our early 21st century generations it's a bit harder, because 75-100 years back I don't think that famous actors and media realized or thought that there'd be an entertainment industry future with fave starts and programs preserved so long, well and constantly in reruns forever--so that we see our faves and their situations enacted over and over through each year in reruns, where they and things remain the same as we all continue to grow older and move on, not living in some constantly revolving cycle. :(
