One of Patty's best performances was on Night Gallery in one of the series' few really good episodes. She played a Rona Barrett type who keeps hounding a has been actress played by Virginia Mayo. The actress presents her with a gift. A diary. Patty finds out that the diary already has an entry in her handwriting. Patty soon thinks that the only way to stop the diary from killing her is to be put into an asylum so she can't hurt herself but suddenly thinks that if she is able to write in the diary for the following day, it means she will live. The tag is that she's been a patient at the hospital for years and she goes through the same protocol every night.

by Anonymousreply 43March 19, 2022 9:59 PM

In her second book (published after her death) she admits that she lied about Sean Astin's paternity.

In her first book she claims Sean was conceiver during a brief affair she had with John Astin, while she was dating Desi Arnaz Jr.

Now she admits that John Astin did not enter her life until AFTER Sean was born

Meaning that she thought Dezi Arnaz Jr, was the biological father of Sean, but covered it up by claiming John Astin was the father.

But of course years later, through DNA testing, Michael Tell was revelaed as Sean biological father, But all those years, Patty Duke thought Dezi was the biological dad, and continued to believe it even after the DNA testing. And still denied Desi his right to be the father to Sean by claiming John was the bio dad.

Patty does not get into the reasons why she lied and denied Desi his right to be a father to Sean. All she says is that "regrets" the hurt she has brought to her family and to Desi and Michael Tell

I streamed "Billie" the other night, I hadn't watched it in years since it was on some old UHF channel when I was in my teens. Wasn't as bad as I'd thought I'd recall it being. Yeah, there are the bad singing and song segments, but it's all good kitschy '60s fun, and the actress playing the mom was cool too. I wish Patty had had a better chance and reputation, in light of her eventually diagnosed illness and related troubles, to have garnered a memorable career on the big screen, instead of the TV show, "VOTD," and the latter TV work alone. But she did eventually help so many people living with bipolar illness and advocating for/educating them and their loved ones, during an era when that was often still not discussed much and frowned on.

I liked Patty because she had no big ego about doing tons of game shows. She was a fierce contestant and played to win, so the regular schmo she was partnered with could go home with a few bucks. What a mensch!

I honestly believe if she had been cast as Violet in "August: Osage County" the movie might have almost worked. Imagine Patty snarling at that bitch Julia Roberts!

Always blows my mind that Patty went from that wholesome TV teenager to Neely O’Hara in the space of one year, 1966 to 1967. That must have been startling to the public at that time.

by Anonymousreply 67July 24, 2022 2:53 AM

Patty Duke was an undisciplined actor, who would have made a hash out of Violet in August: Osage County. She would have made a bunch of cliche, emotional choices and made an uninspired film adaptation of a briliaintly performed theatrical production into a camp fest. Streep may be mannered and gave an uninspiring performance as Violet but at least didn't give the over the top cringe-worthy performance that Duke most assuradely would have given. I think that Duke took the Oscar she won as a teenager as licences to never learn how to act, and instead relied on her 'instincts' for the rest of her career, which is why she wound up with exactly the career her level of performance deserved: tv movie level.

by Anonymousreply 68July 24, 2022 4:34 AM

R68 so tell us how you really feel about Patty Duke? I guess you've never seen some of her work on TV, because you would not call it TV movie level 🤔

I happen to be reading Patty’s memoir from the 1980s. I had no idea just how fucked up her childhood was, living with that weird couple who mentored her. She was very seriously let down by her parents.

Ooh, that's an excellent idea I've never considered, R63! It's Meryl's absolute WORST performance on film. And I say that as a Meryl fan. I would oay good money to see Patty Duke as Violet.

by Anonymousreply 75August 19, 2022 11:57 PM

I wrote that r75 because the over-the-top scenery chewing of the film called for actors who could legitimately make such choices without regard to anything but the character, and I believe Streep served herself more than the story.

It's also a poor adaptation, so someone who was actually unhinged at times might have at least given it some honesty.

You're Like My Mother (1972) has the feel of a made for TV movie. It has 4 characters and basically 1 set. It's reminiscent of both Die! Die! My Darling and Misery. Patty becomes trapped in a home during a snowstorm by her mother-in-law. It was directed by Lamont Johnson who directed Patty in the highly acclaimed TV movie My Sweet Charlie (1970) for which she won an Emmy. Patty's acceptance speech was much discussed at the time.

I’m still reading Patty’s 1980s memoir. I’m just at the point where she elopes with Michael Tell. She claims she’s already pregnant with John Astin’s secret baby and that’s why she married Michael, but of course Michael is later revealed through DNA testing to be Sean Astin‘s real father. I even see the resemblance. And then all of the speculation about Desi Arnaz Junior. I’ve read that Sean seems to be cool with it and has relationships with all three “dads.” But Patty is very dismissive of Michael Tell in the book and obviously she was not truthful. Did she ever publicly apologize or explain? I assume she was just trying to give Sean some stability as a child. I remember hearing about all this as a teenager. Patty and Astin were everywhere at one point, I recall seeing them on the Dinah Shore show and thinking they made an odd couple; John was very solicitous and fatherly and called her Anna, it all seemed strange to me. Even then I didn’t buy the secret baby stuff. I figured it was Desi.

by Anonymousreply 99August 26, 2022 2:16 AM

OK I did some poking around and found Patty’s response to the paternity test:

“I don’t buy that test,” the actress told PEOPLE in 2001. “I can support his truth as long as my truth, if not supported, is respected. I have told him I know what I know to be true. When God looks me in the eye and says, ‘Anna Marie, you have been mistaken all these years,’ then I will consider [Tell’s paternity].”

I wonder what God told her.

I was watching a YouTube video of her husband Mike Pearce talking to some reporter a few days after she died and he said that there was a tumor on her intestine and it burst. R132 in each chapter she keeps saying that the Method actors she worked with were GREAT - and some of them were not - she felt as if her talent was somehow lesser than those folks.

She was a good actress and did some good work but she doesn't seem to really think she did well in anything after The Miracle Worker (with one or two exceptions she mentions).

Somehow she was convinced that she wasn't good because she wasn't a Method actress. She was intimidated by them.....and she was at least as good if not better than the people she gives too much credit to.

Our Patty loves to rock n' roll, a hot dog makes her lose control, what a wild duet.

Miss her 💔 Just think of all the great roles she could have been doing 🤔

Bump

I always overlook her.

Because she's like four feet tall and looks like a wet toad close up. And so fat.

Oh. Thought you said Patti and I didn't pay attention to the rest of the name. Because it fucking hurts when my eyes roll back that far.

Why do you dwell on it?

I miss her too and hate being reminded of her.

Say what you will about her performance, but nobody else would've done this scene exactly this way. That thing she does with her hand at 2:19..

R146 exactly 👍👍

I liked her in “The Violation of Sarah McDavid.” An unknown Ally Sheedy was in it.

R148 should have received an Emmy nomination for this performance 👍👍

Just missing Patty Duke. I see so many roles that she could be doing 💔

by Anonymousreply 153June 15, 2023 10:26 PM

R68 = Lucille Ball

by Anonymousreply 154June 15, 2023 10:30 PM

Saw her as Dolly Levy. She was fantastic! Hello Neely!!!

by Anonymousreply 155June 16, 2023 1:13 AM

R155 don't know if you're joking or not but Patty just never played Dolly Levi. Patty Duke did play Mama Rose in Gypsy at The Washington State Theater👍
