What Say You, Tasteful Friends? Punk Rock Icon (& Former Hottie) Henry Rollins Lists L.A. Lair ($3.9 Million)

The multihyphenate musician, writer, performer and businessman landed in Nichols Canyon, between Hollywood and the Sunset Strip, back in 1999 when he picked up a small bungalow for $740,000. He sold the bungalow a decade later for almost $1.1 million but didn’t have far to schlep his books, instruments and ephemera, which by his own account includes the dirt on which the head of his best friend, Joe Cole, lay after he was shot to death in front of their shared Venice home in 1991. That’s because he’d concurrently spent $2.2 million to acquire a new much more private lair just a mile up the canyon that now, a dozen years later, he’s profitably put up for sale at almost $3.9 million.

Jointly listed with Jane Schore of Coldwell Banker Realty and Victoria Silver of Compass, the 4,348-square-foot home is billed as a “private gated celebrity compound” with three bedrooms and four full and two half baths.

Too bad he already moved his crap out. Funny to see that giant walk-in closet and imagine his three pairs of gym shorts in there....

by Anonymousreply 3November 27, 2021 9:21 PM

Somewhat claustrophobic with all that interior space, you'd think in that location you'd want more windows? And that big wall, or whatever it is, to the left of the house as you're facing it makes it look like it's attached to a warehouse. It's kind of like where a character in a David Lynch movie -- or, I guess, Henry Rollins - would live.

by Anonymousreply 4November 27, 2021 9:26 PM

The outside is grim and the inside looks like a hotel. Nice views.

by Anonymousreply 5November 27, 2021 9:26 PM

The dining area looks like We Work.

I would rather hear about him and the other punks squatting on the abandoned Errol Flynn estate. Anyone got any stories about that?

by Anonymousreply 9November 27, 2021 9:32 PM

So is he gay or what?

by Anonymousreply 10November 27, 2021 9:33 PM

Yuck. Only in L.A. could a house look Rusty.

by Anonymousreply 11November 27, 2021 9:33 PM

He strenuously denies being gay.

by Anonymousreply 12November 27, 2021 9:34 PM

Oddly bland staging in these photos. Some of that ugly furniture looks exactly like those carpeted cat gyms people get for cats to climb onto.

For that kind of money, I’d want a pool and a guest house.

It’s surprising to see Rollins amass that much real estate equity. Good for him.

by Anonymousreply 13November 27, 2021 9:35 PM

What kind of elliptical is that?

by Anonymousreply 14November 27, 2021 9:35 PM

Henry Garfield is a nice middle class boy with intergenerational wealth anyway.

by Anonymousreply 15November 27, 2021 9:36 PM

Soulless staging. Staging that actually makes the house look worse than it is.

The entrance is butt-ugly... could use some work if you want more than 3 mil for this.

The huge retaining wall could be a curious feature... maybe put prayers lodged in crevices. It also suggest a serious geological assessment should be made of the property before sale.

by Anonymousreply 16November 27, 2021 9:38 PM

I would let bim fuck me silly in every room in that house. His new one too.

by Anonymousreply 17November 27, 2021 9:39 PM

Honestly, I find it very depressing to look at.

by Anonymousreply 18November 27, 2021 9:40 PM

That’s the ugliest house I’ve ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 19November 27, 2021 9:42 PM

What, Henry's peen?

by Anonymousreply 20November 27, 2021 9:43 PM

Looks safe, quiet, fireproof and private. I can't imagine why he's selling, looks like his kind of dream house

by Anonymousreply 21November 27, 2021 9:43 PM

Same, r17, rescue-chick, I'd let him do anything to me. Anytime, anywhere.

and funny you'd ask, R20, he has a whole song that gets around to talking about his peen.

by Anonymousreply 22November 27, 2021 9:50 PM

Ugly as shit outside. Internally it's one big amorphic space after another, without a sense of spatial organization or focus within a space -- like a bunch of large rec rooms slapped together.

And that', of course is ignoring the staging and cosmetic finishes and the owner (I don't have a strong opinion of him either way, but this house makes me think I've kindly overlooked some serious faults.)

Sometimes rambling can be sexy or surprising, here it's like a bad film that won't end.

by Anonymousreply 23November 27, 2021 9:52 PM

[quote] For that kind of money, I’d want a pool and a guest house.

A pool at the minimum.

There's very little outdoor space and outdoor space is the main reason to live in LA where you can use it most of the year

by Anonymousreply 24November 27, 2021 9:57 PM

You're one earthquake away from being buried in a landslide.

by Anonymousreply 25November 27, 2021 10:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 26November 27, 2021 10:00 PM

SOOOO UGLY

by Anonymousreply 27November 27, 2021 10:28 PM

I know for a fact Henry let guys blow him because my friend and an acquaintance back in the Black Flag days did so. I waited for my friend a few times while he was blowing him. Both said he was a nice guy and very sexual. Plus, a great kisser.

by Anonymousreply 28November 27, 2021 10:38 PM

Bamboo is not good. It's an invasive exotic plant!

by Anonymousreply 29November 27, 2021 11:05 PM

It's only that price because his name's attached to it, yeah? I'd expect a hell of a lot more bang for the buck at that price.

by Anonymousreply 30November 27, 2021 11:15 PM

September 1991 GAP model, Henry Rollins?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 31November 27, 2021 11:18 PM

Actually the realtor site doesn't mention his name. What is he, technically, a C-list celeb?

by Anonymousreply 32November 27, 2021 11:19 PM

R31, God remember when people looked individual and interesting? Noses, chins, eyes, all different. No filler to be seen in those ads. Love it. Also - Rollins.... HOT AF

by Anonymousreply 33November 27, 2021 11:22 PM

The exterior is pretty ugly--a big version of the sad stucco clad bungalows you see in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys and the cheap suburbs S of LA.. The inside is nothing special. Presumably the location is what makes it special.

I always thought Rollins was bi and the type to want whatever he didn't have at the moment. Like a lot of teh DC punkers, he came from comfortable circumstances and is difficult take seriously.

by Anonymousreply 34November 27, 2021 11:35 PM

BUT HIS BEST FRIEND WAS KILLED

by Anonymousreply 35November 27, 2021 11:37 PM

R9 Hey I used to hang out there, after shows at the Whiskey or this other place , can't remember the name.. Kids would skateboard in the pool. It was fun, not really dangerous. This was in the early eighties.

ANARCHY RULES lol.

by Anonymousreply 36November 27, 2021 11:40 PM

Before Henry, BF had a gay lead singer briefly, I think his name was Rey/Reymondo? Greg didn't like him and booted him out pretty quickly.

This is R36.

Henry started dating fringe lunatic Lydia Lunch at some point in the late eighties. I was friends with Exene Cervanka and had met Lydia around the time she and Exene put out their poetry book.

by Anonymousreply 37November 27, 2021 11:44 PM

I really like the house, but would never buy a place with a retaining wall. Been there, done that.

by Anonymousreply 38November 28, 2021 1:47 AM

I like the kitchen floor. That's it.

by Anonymousreply 39November 28, 2021 1:54 AM

Right on, R36. It’s just strange to me that so many people knew about this, and all from different places. It seemed like a goddam institution.

by Anonymousreply 40November 28, 2021 2:35 AM

People I know still talk Exene’s garage sales. Weep, another thing I missed!

by Anonymousreply 41November 28, 2021 2:40 AM

I fucking hate Rollins' Saturday night show on KCRW. It's a hostile buzzkill to experience immediately after Jason Bentley's superb Metropolis sets.

by Anonymousreply 42November 28, 2021 4:02 AM

Lovely view of telephone wires. And if you were once homeless and miss the feel of an underpass, that entrance will make you nostalgic.

by Anonymousreply 43November 28, 2021 4:17 AM

I’d eat his ass.

by Anonymousreply 44November 28, 2021 4:21 AM

A view on to dry scrub that's only a dropped match away from an inferno doesn't do it for me.

by Anonymousreply 45November 28, 2021 4:31 AM

Charmless

by Anonymousreply 46November 28, 2021 4:35 AM

He's come to resemble the Bull Shannon, the bailiff on "Night Court", almost exactly.

by Anonymousreply 47November 28, 2021 4:41 AM

I like it. It's very masculine.

by Anonymousreply 48November 28, 2021 4:52 AM

Surprised how much I hate this house. The inside and the outside.

by Anonymousreply 49November 28, 2021 4:55 AM

The exterior views of the house from the driveway, the "concrete jungle" of the realtor's copy, look like the city waste transfer sites where they drive the trash trucks in from one side and from out the other side leave bigger trash trucks headed...somewhere. Only the transfer sites are well planned, beautifully landscaped, and not unattractive.

by Anonymousreply 50November 28, 2021 5:02 AM

R37---Exene stories, puhlease.

I remain gobsmacked that she was married to Vigo and had his baby, what a pairing!

by Anonymousreply 51November 28, 2021 7:08 AM

Say something nice: I guess the house is very on-brand for Rollins.

That said, it just reminds me how much I loathe exposed concrete, especially in residential spaces. There is really nothing good to be said about it as a design choice.

by Anonymousreply 52November 28, 2021 9:12 AM

What's with the fur rug? Barf. Didn't he used to be a vegan? And is bff with Ian MacKaye, the "inventor" of Straight edge and a lifelong vegan?

by Anonymousreply 53November 28, 2021 9:58 AM

R17 Rescue-chick I didn't know you get down like that?

by Anonymousreply 54November 28, 2021 9:59 AM

It could be turned into a wonderful home. All that exposed concrete inside needs to be covered. I like a lot of glass and stone or bricks. And that humongous concrete wall at the car park could be disguised with a lot of hanging plants. It would just take while for them to grow. Or some architectural additions could be added to soften the harshness.

by Anonymousreply 55November 28, 2021 12:25 PM

It looks like a cheap garden apartment in some dying suburban quarter of LA. Here's a guy who grew-up in a leafy row house section of DC and went to a private school for misfits in one of its most upscale (leafy!) suburbs--so I guess this is how he rebels except he's about 60 and might want something that doesn't look like a slum anymore. You could say he's like someone who settled in the East Village in 1980 and never left except LA's canyons were quirky, not gritty and he's always been a bit of a poseur---a non-drug user for cannibis legalization, that sort of thing. Edgy yet probably as dull as a Presbyterian minister.

by Anonymousreply 56November 28, 2021 2:23 PM

Where did he grow up in DC? Where did he attend school?

by Anonymousreply 57November 28, 2021 5:09 PM

All that concrete outside should be covered with dirt and plants.

by Anonymousreply 58November 28, 2021 5:16 PM

r54, I used to, no longer. But I would come out of slut retirement for Rollins.

by Anonymousreply 59November 28, 2021 5:22 PM

R59 But he's so lame and full of himself.

by Anonymousreply 60November 28, 2021 5:24 PM

I would like to be lamed and full of him

by Anonymousreply 61November 28, 2021 5:26 PM

R61 Ugh

by Anonymousreply 62November 28, 2021 5:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 72November 28, 2021 11:55 PM

Contrary to popular belief, punk rock is a gay as hell. So many gays, dykes and bi folks were part of the movement. Young Rollins could get it.

by Anonymousreply 73March 10, 2022 2:39 AM

Oof. Truly terrible IMO. THe exterior is really ugly and the house is crammed in there. Don't like the interior either, but it's big and open and the layout is pretty simple. So, I think a lot could be done with it to make it a nice place on the inside.

by Anonymousreply 74March 10, 2022 3:27 AM

Hideous-a total tear down.

by Anonymousreply 75March 10, 2022 5:33 AM

by Anonymousreply 76March 10, 2022 5:38 AM

by Anonymousreply 77March 10, 2022 5:59 AM

Very sterile-looking for being so spacious. The outdoor spaces are not good for LA at all.

by Anonymousreply 78March 10, 2022 5:59 AM

$3.9 million for that ugly concrete slab? The outside of that mess looks an an abandoned Soho factory, circa the 1970s. Depressing and creepy.

by Anonymousreply 79March 10, 2022 9:20 AM

Yes, R79, we know about Henry's face, but what about the house??

by Anonymousreply 80March 10, 2022 12:20 PM

Near-perfect for me. Don't think Hank is gay. Just really gay friendly.

"I'm just so sick of homophobia. How people get their asses kicked for something that's as natural as eating. Just because you're a guy who likes guys, you can lose your job. Or have people tell you that the Bible says that you're a bad person," Rollins says. "When someone started those rumors [about me], they did it as a putdown. You never hear, 'Oh, he's straight." And have it be a putdown. But I realized how homophobia is just a symptom of ignorance and weakness. It's really something we can all do without."

by Anonymousreply 81March 10, 2022 12:35 PM

R73: Punk always seemed like art students from wealthy backgrounds who screamed a lot, so yeah, plenty of gays. The house seems soulless and uninteresting. All that concrete and that shade of beige is a like an LA cliche.
