Man stabbed to death by a stranger on train in Penn Station

A straphanger was stabbed to death in an apparently random attack while riding through one of Manhattan’s busiest subway stations early Sunday.

The 32-year-old victim was approached by an unidentified knife-wielding man on a northbound 2 train as it pulled into Penn Station at 12:17 a.m., police said.

He was stabbed in the neck by the killer and taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the NYPD.

Them rats is pretty hardcore in the middle of the night. They will stab your ass for a piece of your pizza.

Just a warning to non-New Yorkers.

More and more of my friends are realising that it's now unwise to go out at night.

That's when the crazy loons come out of their lairs to create mayhem.

Why anyone would want to spend all that money to live in a shithole like that is beyond me.

by Anonymousreply 18November 21, 2021 10:02 PM

R12 Straphanger is an old term the media would use to refer to NYC subway passengers. Subway trains had strap handles that standing passengers who hold on to for support. I believe they originally were leather straps, hence the name. By the mid 20th century they were replaced with metal strap handles. Today most trains have horizontal poles instead.

by Anonymousreply 29November 21, 2021 10:21 PM

This is awful, but doesn't something awful like this happen at least a couple times a year - even during the modern gentrified era of NYC? I mean it's over 8 million people in close proximity with billions of interactions. Something's bound to wrong at some point. This isn't to minimize a horrible death, but is violent crime really that much higher overall than on average the last 10 or 20 years.

by Anonymousreply 30November 21, 2021 10:21 PM

"I've" referred to both the words experienced AND seen; it's not necessary to repeat it for each verb. I wasn't typing it as "I seen..." Do you understand that now, R25?

by Anonymousreply 36November 21, 2021 10:29 PM

Does dark complexion mean black or swarthy like an Iranian or someone from India? Confusing.

Probably an insane homeless person. One of the many in NYC. Yesterday I saw a crazy homeless guy verbally attacking a man for being gay. Fortunately, it didn’t escalate.

Revenue from this is supposed to supplement state funds for the MTA, and it’s intended to encourage subway ridership. Hochul wants everyone back at work but only if they take public transportation.

Give it a fucking rest!

You aged incels who don't live in NYC have a beef with each or all of major NYC newspapers, NYT, NYP and Daily News.

Those of us who live here and simply click on whatever story hits news website (Google, Edge, or whatever) to with just that. If Daily News, NYP or NYP has first link to story it is more than certain the rest will as well. No one is going to sort through a bunch of links just to find one acceptable to loons on DL.

Oh and if they post links to NYP you aged incels moan "it's behind a paywall, please cut and paste entire story".....

For news like this all three major NYC newspapers pretty much have gist of story down. What may vary is now deep coverage goes to fit editorial bias.

NYP and Daily News will most always post perp walks, arrest photos, etc.. when available. NYT won't, especially if it involves any minority ranging from blacks to trans.

Furthermore if you want the meat of any story like this NYP, Daily News or even Daily Fail are far better sources than NYT.

by Anonymousreply 56November 21, 2021 11:38 PM

[quote]NYC is literally a warzone.

NYC has 9 million people. The state of Iowa has around 3 million. If a guy gets shot in a crap neighborhood in Des Moines does that make the entire state a warzone?

by Anonymousreply 57November 21, 2021 11:41 PM

At first glance thought this was yet another sad case of some loon lose on subway system. Upon reading entire story this is far worse. We're not IMHO looking at some homeless deranged person, but quite the opposite, this suspect knew what he was doing. Worse the guy got away and remains at large.

by Anonymousreply 60November 21, 2021 11:49 PM

Am not blaming victim, and God grant his poor soul eternal rest in peace, but rule #1 for riding NYC subways is to always have your guard up.

*NEVER* go to sleep riding the subway. This was true back in 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, and still is today.

Good part of crimes committed against persons in subway system is when they were caught unawares; sleeping, engrossed with their phone or other device...

At best such persons are robbed of their property. Worse, well that can be anything from rape, thrown onto tracks, and or as we've just seen, attacked and killed.

by Anonymousreply 61November 21, 2021 11:50 PM

[quote] Furthermore if you want the meat of any story like this NYP, Daily News or even Daily Fail are far better sources than NYT.

Unless of course R56, the victim is an upper middle class white person, in which case it will be front page in the Times and the subject of several op-eds and then a longer magazine thought piece.

by Anonymousreply 62November 21, 2021 11:55 PM

Not anymore really. Today's NYT would be (and has been) far more outraged by violence against any various minority (blacks, trans, Latino/Hispanic...) than any white person in NYC or elsewhere.

They're still going on about various BLM cases for a start.

NYT is firmly a woke limousine liberal rag.

by Anonymousreply 68November 22, 2021 12:03 AM

I would not be asleep on the subway at 12:30AM (apparently the victim was a homeless man laying down sleeping on the train).

Love how this brings out the hysteria from non-New Yorkers about how the city is a "war zone" and you can see what people want to leave (MARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Please. It's difficult to get an apartment again, rents are back to normal, theater is back, the streets are crowded again - unfortunately crime happens in every big city.

And the other slashing... looks like the victim got into a fight with the attacker... Also not smart to get into arguments on the subway. And good to remember NYC is not a playground - after they disney-ed Times Square and all the breeders descended on Manhattan with their strollers and money - there were years when everyone seemed to forget that.

There isn't much of a crowd per se at Penn Station at 12 midnight.

That being said guy simply stabbed someone, then got off train when doors opened and walked upstairs and out of station before anyone knew what happened.

There are LE stationed at NYP and Times Square nearly 24/7. But quite honestly unless they were on platform or close by in station *and* perp was pointed out to them, or perhaps there was some near instant radioing of information, it is easy to be long gone....

Penn Station like Times Square is a rat warren of platforms, passage and stairways. Absent a huge LE force it is easy to get out of there unnoticed (hence the cameras).

By time this crime was called in and massive show of LE force arrived anyone could have gotten out of station and onto streets around Penn Station, yes, literally vanishing.

R71, there’s also a problem with the radio communications between street cops and those stationed underground.

This is a small problem when a shoplifter disappears into the subway after a robbery. It’s a lot worse when there are more serious crimes being committed. Luckily a murder like this (yes, it’s murder) is a rare occurrence still.

But let’s defund the NYPD.

Quite honestly NYC subway system was going to shit before covid hit. Three or even four years ago now there was much talk about rising crime, but very little agreement from BdeB and city council on how to solve issue.

MTA was supposed to hire more police officers, but don't know if that happened.

Bottom line compared to 1970's or even 1980's you see far less LE in subway system nowadays. This was before covid, and certainly afterwards.

[quote] Part of the problem is that in the name of “fairness” New York State stopped requiring bail for most crime. Someone can stab someone and be back on the street in two hours.

DC did away with money bonds in 1990. The bondsmen were aghast and obviously out of business.

But DC had and has a really strong PreTrial Services Agency (PSA). Every arrestee is drug tested when they get to the central cell block before they first appear in court. PSA investigates them as much as possible (background, mental health issues, family contacts and where they can stay etc). If they are released then there are often all kinds of conditions possible for a judge to impose like drug testing, drug program, mental health assessments & supervision, ankle bracelets, curfews, halfway-house placement, a high intensity supervision program, regular meetings with their PSA officer, stay-aways from victims and locations, curfews, etc, And, of course, they have their own lawyer appointed before they appear for that first appearance who also can argue for release conditions or challenge probable cause. Violations will result in a Show Cause hearing and possible more restrictions or revocation and you can sit your ass in jail until your case is resolved.

DC's failure to appear rate is pretty low. And this gets people into programs asap.

That said, a stabber on the Metro, with a dead or just injured victim would never be released.

It wasn't Penn Station and it was after midnight.

by Anonymousreply 112November 22, 2021 4:41 AM

In R56 "Oh and if they post links to NYP ", should be "NYT".

Carry on....

R105 are you hot? Because if you're hot it's ok, if you're not that's gross.

How's the NJ PATH doin'? Everything ok?

by Anonymousreply 115November 22, 2021 5:37 AM

This is equally horrible. Caught on video-Lower Manhattan: Homeless man passed out in housing project stairwell set on fire dies after two weeks

A man who was set on fire in the stairwell of a Lower East Side building earlier this month has died, police said on Saturday. The unidentified victim was found unconscious with severe burns to his torso and lower body inside the building on Pitt Street just before 5 p.m. on Nov. 5, according to the NYPD. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died on Thursday, police said.

Officers arrested a suspect on the same day the victim was found. Nathaniel Terry, 27, who lives in the same building, was initially charged by police with attempted murder, assault and arson. Authorities said they’re still working to identify the victim, who did not have identification on him when he was found. Police described the victim as a white man with dark-colored hair. He was wearing a black jacket, black sweater and dark-colored pants.

<- But he was SNORING!

by Anonymousreply 117November 22, 2021 5:56 AM

I think most homeless people know that the subways are not safe and only ride them when it's really, really cold. Plus it's hard to sleep with all the stops and announcements.

RIP

Seriously, R123, do you think homeless peoples' lives matter less because they're homeless? Damn.

by Anonymousreply 124November 22, 2021 2:39 PM

[quote] In this thread alone, two completely innocent black lives taken by obvious sociopaths. No marches for them. No hashtags for them.

That’s because they can’t be blamed on white people or white-adjacent Hispanics.

by Anonymousreply 125November 22, 2021 2:54 PM

R124, that’s what you got from that post?

Bless your heart, hun. Keep looking for somewhere to be outraged, you’ll find it. I have confidence in you, sweety.

I’m not TERRIFIED to ride the subway, but I stay vigilant amd don’t use my phone or earbuds. I’m a woman and put on a bitch face, so the most I can hope for us that there’s an easier-looking target nearby. I’m also home when it’s dark because I am teetering on the edge of Old.

by Anonymousreply 127November 22, 2021 3:51 PM

All the sensitive people who complained about the stop and frisk. Hey assholes, if you had nothing to hide, it shouldn’t have been a problem.

Sketchy fucks.

by Anonymousreply 128November 22, 2021 3:57 PM

don't take the subway at night. take a cab. if you can't afford a cab, don't go out or make plans to come home early.

the subways are quite packed now.

by Anonymousreply 129November 22, 2021 3:57 PM

Teetering only leads to one thing, r127... a broken hip.

[quote] I’m not TERRIFIED to ride the subway, but I stay vigilant amd don’t use my phone or earbuds.

I’ll never understand why people are willing to live like that. Where I live is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S. One of the reasons for scoring high, besides all the other positive qualities, is that crime is practically non-existent. Delivered packages can sit outside for days and no one steals them. Violent crime is exceedingly rare, and when it occurs, it’s people that know each other, not strangers. I can go out outside in the middle of the night by myself, visit a dark isolated ATM if I like, and have absolutely zero concern.

It can’t be worth it to live in a place where people murder other people at random, no matter how big or small the risk is for that happening to you. No, I’m not going to provide identifying information like where I live.

R131 is possibly the dullest, slowest, most boring poster ever to appear on Datalounge. All the nasty little troll cares about is his personal safety. He probably lives in The Villages, is 84 years old., votes republican, loves Trump, and thinks kids today aren't anything like they use to be.

I'd go on but he's probably already passed away, as he posted almost a half an hour ago.

by Anonymousreply 134November 22, 2021 4:55 PM

Word of advice, r134...do *not* go on his lawn.

by Anonymousreply 135November 22, 2021 5:36 PM

I truthfully believe this: that when the criminals saw Trump lose they saw any chance of a future for themselves go down the drain. In their desperate delusions, they thought the Criminal-In-Chief would expunge records, pardon crimes, encourage anarchy, sanction chauvinism and squelch #metoo, etc. His loss is making them go berserk.

And yes, he had a lot of black male supporters.

I don’t know anyone who is “terrified” of using the subway these days. Except maybe DLers who don’t live in NYC, but does anyone really “know” them?

As for this attack… I’m sorry the fellow was killed, but maybe the murderer had a good reason? I mean, if it was planned and all. And it seems to have been. If watching dozens of episodes of Columbo has taught me anything, it’s that murderers are often justified in their killings. Sometimes the victims are just complete assholes.

by Anonymousreply 137November 22, 2021 6:54 PM

True. If we dig deep enough we’ll probably find an extensive blackmail operation between victim and perp.

by Anonymousreply 138November 22, 2021 8:00 PM

More mayhem down there. Monday morning a woman was punched. put into a headlock and robbed of her purse in a NYC subway station.

by Anonymousreply 164December 16, 2021 6:56 AM

A key point worth noting is that police no longer have any presence in the subways. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and you could always expect to see a copy on a train and platforms, even late at night. I can't recall the last time I saw a copy in the subway system, except for the occasional spot checking of bags and knapsacks at turnstiles during certain event days like 9/11. It's basically a free fall all in the subway, because you have a combination of emotionally disturbed and opportunistic criminals, but there is no deterrent.

by Anonymousreply 174December 16, 2021 10:19 PM

I see cops.

During rush hour in the morning, they are in the stations. I have seen them ride the trains.

by Anonymousreply 175December 16, 2021 10:24 PM

I lived in NY in the 80s and never saw cops in train stations or on trains. That’s 2hybtge6 had theAngels, though 8 never saw one of them on a train, either.
