Good actors/actresses whom you nonetheless hate/despise

Helena Bonham Carter. I've always hated her. Her face. Her voice. Most of her movies. She just annoys me.

by Anonymousreply 102September 16, 2022 1:21 PM

Halle Berry....Bitch is Cray-CRAY!

by Anonymousreply 1November 18, 2021 9:55 PM

I never liked Kevin Spacey, always came off as smug

by Anonymousreply 2November 18, 2021 10:09 PM

Laura Linney. Good actress, she just seems so pinched and tight and she makes me uncomfortable. I wouldn't use hate/despise.

There's something very smarmy about Jeff Goldblum. I just don't get why everyone thinks he's so hot. He grossed me out in The Fly and I never got over it. That means he must have done a good job. I also have seen him in other stuff and he's just, Jeff Goldblum.

by Anonymousreply 3November 18, 2021 10:14 PM

You're right about Jeffy. He plays himself in every movie and that ain't good. He has no range.

by Anonymousreply 4November 18, 2021 11:49 PM

Olivia Colman.

by Anonymousreply 5August 31, 2022 4:18 PM

R3, JG doesn't remember he was The Fly.

Johnny Depp. Hate his fans, too.

Nicole Kidman. Hate her smugness and waxy face

by Anonymousreply 18August 31, 2022 7:43 PM

William H. Macy. No particular reason. He just grates on my nerves.

Also, like R10, another vote for prissy, uber femme John Malkovich.

by Anonymousreply 19August 31, 2022 7:51 PM

Another vote for Laura Linney. She grates on my nerves, but I can't put my finger on why that is.

Jim Carrey

Zooey Deschanel

by Anonymousreply 20August 31, 2022 8:32 PM

Came here to say Laura linnet as well. For the exact reasons r3 stated. Truly don’t have any idea why she’s considered a “great actress.”

by Anonymousreply 21August 31, 2022 8:43 PM

Mark Ruffalo

by Anonymousreply 22September 8, 2022 2:04 AM

Another for Malkovich. He disgusts and repels me on every level.

by Anonymousreply 23September 8, 2022 2:18 AM

Faye Dunaway- she’s such a cunt and she treats others like shit.

Denzel Washington- homophobic asshole

Tammy Cruise

Cate Blanchette

by Anonymousreply 29September 8, 2022 3:07 AM

Joaquin Phoenix. I liked him years ago, but he's become too insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 30September 8, 2022 5:26 AM

R11, OP said "good actress" and Salma Hayek is not and never has been a good actress.

by Anonymousreply 31September 8, 2022 7:25 AM

[quote]Another vote for Laura Linney. She grates on my nerves, but I can't put my finger on why that is.

I loved her in Ozark.

by Anonymousreply 32September 8, 2022 7:54 AM

Anthony Quinn, Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie.

by Anonymousreply 33September 8, 2022 8:01 AM

Gillian Anderson. She's had some terrible performances and a few great ones, and certainly has presence and beauty, but I despise her for reasons I don't understand

by Anonymousreply 34September 8, 2022 8:23 AM

Winona Ryder. I have to suspend my disgust to get through Stranger Things.

by Anonymousreply 35September 8, 2022 8:28 AM

R34 I don't agree with your choice but totally agree with your reaction. There are a few people "I despise...for reasons I don't understand". That is my reasoning for disliking both DeNiro and Streep. I understand they are considered great but don't get it in the long run. Maybe they hung around too long?

by Anonymousreply 36September 8, 2022 8:28 AM

Jack Nicholson. More smug than all of the "smug" actors previously mentioned in this thread put together.

by Anonymousreply 37September 8, 2022 8:35 AM

Another vote for John Malkovich. I can't watch him in anything because he makes me physically ill.

by Anonymousreply 38September 8, 2022 8:37 AM

R38: Why do so many people dislike him? I know nothing about him and am curious. Tia!

by Anonymousreply 39September 8, 2022 8:39 AM

Gene Kelley, Julie Andrews, Brad Pitt, Depp, Spencer Tracey, Errol Flynn, Aniston, SJP, Jared Leto, Sean Penn, Gloria Swanson, Jim Carey, Cameron Diaz, Diane Keaton, Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, and Laurence Fishburne

Al Pacino since he started yelling through his movies. And who is that actor from Death Wish? I can't stand him. I cannot bear Arnold Schortfinger whatever. Joe Pesci and I find E. Page unbearable now.

Joan Crawford too. I know her daughter probably exaggerated the abuse, but there were witnesses who corroborated her stories. And Steven Seagal. Kirk Douglas, the rapist. Robert Wagner, the killer. Jack Nicholson.

by Anonymousreply 40September 8, 2022 8:40 AM

R40- Steven Seagal is revolting. Putin asskisser.

by Anonymousreply 41September 8, 2022 8:43 AM

[quote]R38: Why do so many people dislike him? I know nothing about him and am curious. Tia!

Because he's the personification of pure evil. Also, he's ugly.

by Anonymousreply 42September 8, 2022 8:46 AM

Denzel Washington was really good early on, but by the mid-'90s, he was believing the New Poitier hype. All I see when I watch him now is self-satisfaction. His preening through Fences was a dismal showing, especially against memories of what James Earl Jones had done in that role. Now he's the kind of actor who gets rave reviews and award nominations for just showing up. The phenomenon of acclaim out of proportion to quality of performance is far worse in his case than it is in Streep's. (And at least she has a sense of humor about herself.)

But I do acknowledge he had or has actual talent. I'm not sure I can say that about his son, who's been obliterated by the other actors in every movie I've seen him in, even when he had the lead.

by Anonymousreply 43September 8, 2022 8:58 AM

R42- Wow, I have never paid much attention to him, but I am off to Google this now!! Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 44September 8, 2022 8:59 AM

Charles Bronson! That's his name. Ugh. I forgot to mention an important one that ppl THINK is talented. She isn't. Marlene Dietrich. Ugly as sin, too. And Nicholas Cage is so damn annoying! I really can't stand to watch his films, except for Raising Arizona. And maybe Moonstruck. He still annoys me in that too, though.

by Anonymousreply 45September 8, 2022 9:05 AM

R43- I agree with you I really admired him at first and was very disappointed when he became smug and egotistical. He also really hit the wall hard with his looks.

by Anonymousreply 46September 8, 2022 9:12 AM

R45- His wife ruined every movie he was in, imo. Wooden actress, very dull.

by Anonymousreply 47September 8, 2022 9:14 AM

On what planet is Steven Seagal a good actor? Basta!

by Anonymousreply 48September 8, 2022 9:26 AM

Charles Bronson was great in "Noon to Three" and that was it. He was the Steven Seagal (sp?) of his generation.

by Anonymousreply 49September 8, 2022 9:27 AM

^^He and his wife were the Meghan and Harry in the tabloids of the day.

by Anonymousreply 50September 8, 2022 9:30 AM

[quote]Charles Bronson was great in "Noon to Three" and that was it. He was the Steven Seagal (sp?) of his generation.

I wasn't a huge Charles Bronson fan, but he deserves better than to be called the Steven Seagal of his generation. Seagal was a Bronson wannabe whose movies were crap.

by Anonymousreply 51September 8, 2022 7:49 PM

A friend who saw Malkovich in “Burn This” said he was hot in it. Maybe he reads differently live than recorded. He was very good with Gary Sinise in the TV version of the Steppenwolf production of “True West,” which really made Malk a star. I preferred Sinise but who is and isn’t selected for fame is an unknowable process sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 52September 8, 2022 8:11 PM

Even though I think she’s a great actress, I loathe Cate Blanchett as a person. She comes across as superficial and DUMB.

by Anonymousreply 53September 8, 2022 8:15 PM

Of those still living and considered prestige - meaning award nominations and critical praise

Women: Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Glenda Jackson, Judi Dench, Jane Fonda, Jessica Lange, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Williams, Amy Adams, Kristen Stewart, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Isabelle Adjani, Rachel McAdams, Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Natalie Portman, Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon

Men: Alain Delon, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Rami Malek, Ryan Gosling, Eddie Redmayne, Kevin Kline, George Clooney, Matt Damon (except in Mr. Ripley), Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson (after 1975), Warren Beatty, Richard Dreyfuss,

Honestly, I hate most "prestige" actors born after 1970.

I can tolerate Frances McDormand, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laura Linney, Nicole Kidman, Kathleen Turner, and Debra Winger, but I don't get why they're so overpraised. I honestly barely register men on screen unless they're excellent or terrible.

A lot of the actors mentioned on this thread I really like. Of the living ones, I enjoy Jeff Goldblum, John Malkovich, Donald Sutherland Winona Ryder and Nicolas Cage in almost everything. Denzel Washington was great until the 2000s.

Of the dead ones, I absolutely detest Greer Garson, (post-code) Norma Sherarer, Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Harvey, Leslie Caron, Susan Hayward (except in VOTD), Loretta Young, Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, Debbie Reynolds (I like her as a person), James Dean, Kirk Douglas, Spencer Tracy, Gregory Peck (I love him as a person), and Laurence Olivier.

by Anonymousreply 54September 8, 2022 8:30 PM

Christian Bale is one of the best 2 or 3 of his generation.

And he can get the fuck of my screen.

by Anonymousreply 55September 8, 2022 8:35 PM

Steven Seagal??? R40, hon did you miss the "good" part of the thread title?

by Anonymousreply 56September 8, 2022 8:41 PM

Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Missy Cruise, Nicholas Cage, John Travolta, Dustin Hoffman and of course the mumbler, what did he say, Marlon Brando.

by Anonymousreply 57September 8, 2022 8:42 PM

I am on board with loathing Gillian Anderson however I don't even think she's a good actress, I just don't see it and I think she's awful.

Eddie Redmayne (sp) grosses me out because he always needs chapstick and some water to drink.

Steve Carrol gives me the willies.

by Anonymousreply 58September 8, 2022 9:02 PM

Gillian Anderson is very beautiful, but she ruined the film adaptation of The House of Mirth.

by Anonymousreply 59September 8, 2022 9:10 PM

I don't think she's beautiful either.

by Anonymousreply 60September 8, 2022 9:11 PM

And because movies aren't as temporal as the actors are, I must yet add Movie Star Bruce Willis, whereas I adored TV Star Bruce Willis, aka David Addison. He has one facial expression in film:

A pursed-lips smirk.

by Anonymousreply 61September 8, 2022 9:22 PM

Tom Cruise OWNS this thread.

by Anonymousreply 62September 9, 2022 2:39 AM

More votes for Julia Roberts and Jennifer Anniston. Also, Adam Sandler, Jason Sudeikis, and Mark Walberg

by Anonymousreply 63September 9, 2022 3:21 AM

[quote]Tom Cruise OWNS this thread.

No, he doesn't. He was never a very good actor.

by Anonymousreply 64September 9, 2022 3:26 AM

T54 I'm impressed by the breadth of your hatred

by Anonymousreply 65September 9, 2022 5:00 AM

R54 That's a lot of hate. Maybe you should lay off movies for awhile.

by Anonymousreply 66September 9, 2022 8:12 AM

[quote]That's a lot of hate. Maybe you should lay off movies for awhile.

And yet he likes the hideous John Malkovich in "almost everything."

by Anonymousreply 67September 9, 2022 9:10 AM

Bonnie Chartier, pornograghic educator.

by Anonymousreply 68September 9, 2022 9:55 AM

Jack Nicholson, Gene Hackman. Nicholas Turturro the ugliest actor alive is impossible to even look at. I had to turn off Quiz Show. You wanted Ralph to win even if he was cheating.

by Anonymousreply 69September 9, 2022 10:13 AM

R69, Um, no, no I didn't.

But then, I can't take seriously a dislike of Gene Hackman.

by Anonymousreply 70September 9, 2022 12:53 PM

Katherine Hepburn.

(There, I said it!)

by Anonymousreply 71September 9, 2022 12:56 PM

Dustin Hoffman

Tom Cruise

Is Mel Gibson a good actor? Don't know because I refuse to watch him in anything.

Julia Roberts

Gwyneth Paltrow

by Anonymousreply 72September 9, 2022 1:19 PM

Olivier.

by Anonymousreply 73September 9, 2022 1:48 PM

Phyllica Rashad. She's a a smug cunt. I wonder if her nepo baby Condola is a cunt like her.

by Anonymousreply 74September 9, 2022 3:25 PM

I like a great deal of actors actually, but most of the ones shoved down my throat (especially in the last 20 years) as "great" range from bland to awful. It is astounding that dishrag Amy Adams has six Oscar nominations. SIX!

by Anonymousreply 75September 9, 2022 3:30 PM

Olivia Colman

by Anonymousreply 76September 9, 2022 4:57 PM

Nicolas Cage

Nick Nolte

Helen Hunt

by Anonymousreply 77September 9, 2022 5:03 PM

I used to be wary of Julia Roberts, but I believe I was wrong about her.

The dress she wore to her recent premiere was dreadful, but it was more sweet than dreadful, for sure.

She loves her family. ❤️

by Anonymousreply 78September 9, 2022 5:12 PM

Cillian Murphy. Yes he can act - and yet I don’t care.

by Anonymousreply 79September 9, 2022 6:59 PM

[quote]Katherine Hepburn.

Katharine.

by Anonymousreply 80September 9, 2022 7:26 PM

Amy Adams and Naomi watts. They both have such dreary, sad sack and passive vibes to their performances. Unfortunately critics adore them so they will have long careers.

by Anonymousreply 81September 9, 2022 8:34 PM

Laura Dern, nepo baby par excellence.

by Anonymousreply 82September 9, 2022 8:41 PM

I hate the term “nepo baby” by the way. Nepotism alone can give somebody a bankable career for five years maximum. You actually have to be decent at acting after a trial run.

by Anonymousreply 83September 9, 2022 8:55 PM

R82 nepotism is huge in Hollywood but I have to disagree with your assessment of Dern. She's genuinely talented. Enlightened was a pitch perfect portrayal of a woman hooked on the " positive thinking" cult so prevalent in this culture. I'm so sad it didn't get more seasons.

by Anonymousreply 84September 9, 2022 8:58 PM

Laurence Olivier

by Anonymousreply 85September 9, 2022 9:07 PM

Susan Sarandon

by Anonymousreply 86September 9, 2022 9:09 PM

Jeremy Piven.. Although he never rated better than barely marginal as an actor, I nevertheless loathe him sufficiently such that he needs to lead off my list. Mel Gibson Joan Crawford Van Johnson Bing Crosby

by Anonymousreply 87September 9, 2022 9:11 PM

I didn’t say she wasn’t talented, R84. This thread is about good actors who we just don’t like for whatever irrational reason…

by Anonymousreply 88September 9, 2022 9:37 PM

I am rewatching Law and order svu and an episode just had Craig Bierko on it and I remembered that except for The Long Kiss Goodnight I don't like watching him. He's fine as an actor and is likely a nice person but, something about his mouth freaks me out. Like he used to be a meth head and ground all his teeth down and had to get cheap dentures. And when he smiles he has serious crazy face and crazy eyes.

by Anonymousreply 89September 10, 2022 1:17 AM

America Ferrera. Decent comedy actress on Ugly Betty and Superstore. She comes off as insufferable in a lot of interviews.

by Anonymousreply 90September 10, 2022 1:22 AM

R83 Maube so, but the younger generation is so full of these brats that it becomes insufferable

by Anonymousreply 91September 10, 2022 3:40 AM

R90 she latched on inclusion when early on she had no problem being a white latina getting hired while others weren't. She's a phony.

by Anonymousreply 92September 10, 2022 8:21 AM

^it's now her identity as actress when she cared nothing of it when she was one of few latinas being hired.

by Anonymousreply 93September 10, 2022 8:23 AM

Susan Sarandon.

by Anonymousreply 94September 12, 2022 3:37 AM

George Clooney

by Anonymousreply 95September 12, 2022 7:26 AM

Julia Roberts. I don't know who I dislike more, her, or the people who revere her.

by Anonymousreply 96September 12, 2022 7:43 AM

[quote]America Ferrera.

It's her name that bugs me the most.

by Anonymousreply 97September 12, 2022 7:44 AM

Mrs. Trumbull, especially when she exposed her pussy.

by Anonymousreply 98September 16, 2022 10:48 AM

Natalie Portman....fantastic actress, but she is nails on chalkboard as far as personality.

by Anonymousreply 99September 16, 2022 12:10 PM

Why would anyone care to know who you hate? Any why are so many people hating on others? This is how you want to live? Grow the fuck up already.

by Anonymousreply 100September 16, 2022 12:13 PM

Surprised to see Natalie Portman and Jessica Lange's names on here. I think they're both exquisite.

I can't think of any actors or actresses I particularly despise, but there are plenty of political opiners and polemics, Twitter twats and YouTube mouthpieces I hate.
