Helena Bonham Carter. I've always hated her. Her face. Her voice. Most of her movies. She just annoys me.

Laura Linney. Good actress, she just seems so pinched and tight and she makes me uncomfortable. I wouldn't use hate/despise.
There's something very smarmy about Jeff Goldblum. I just don't get why everyone thinks he's so hot. He grossed me out in The Fly and I never got over it. That means he must have done a good job. I also have seen him in other stuff and he's just, Jeff Goldblum.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 18, 2021 10:14 PM |
You're right about Jeffy. He plays himself in every movie and that ain't good. He has no range.

Anthony Quinn, Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie.

Gillian Anderson. She's had some terrible performances and a few great ones, and certainly has presence and beauty, but I despise her for reasons I don't understand
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 8, 2022 8:23 AM |
Winona Ryder. I have to suspend my disgust to get through Stranger Things.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 8, 2022 8:28 AM |
R34 I don't agree with your choice but totally agree with your reaction. There are a few people "I despise...for reasons I don't understand". That is my reasoning for disliking both DeNiro and Streep. I understand they are considered great but don't get it in the long run. Maybe they hung around too long?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 8, 2022 8:28 AM |
Jack Nicholson. More smug than all of the "smug" actors previously mentioned in this thread put together.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 8, 2022 8:35 AM |

Gene Kelley, Julie Andrews, Brad Pitt, Depp, Spencer Tracey, Errol Flynn, Aniston, SJP, Jared Leto, Sean Penn, Gloria Swanson, Jim Carey, Cameron Diaz, Diane Keaton, Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, and Laurence Fishburne
Al Pacino since he started yelling through his movies. And who is that actor from Death Wish? I can't stand him. I cannot bear Arnold Schortfinger whatever. Joe Pesci and I find E. Page unbearable now.
Joan Crawford too. I know her daughter probably exaggerated the abuse, but there were witnesses who corroborated her stories. And Steven Seagal. Kirk Douglas, the rapist. Robert Wagner, the killer. Jack Nicholson.

[quote]R38: Why do so many people dislike him? I know nothing about him and am curious. Tia!
Because he's the personification of pure evil. Also, he's ugly.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 8, 2022 8:46 AM |
Denzel Washington was really good early on, but by the mid-'90s, he was believing the New Poitier hype. All I see when I watch him now is self-satisfaction. His preening through Fences was a dismal showing, especially against memories of what James Earl Jones had done in that role. Now he's the kind of actor who gets rave reviews and award nominations for just showing up. The phenomenon of acclaim out of proportion to quality of performance is far worse in his case than it is in Streep's. (And at least she has a sense of humor about herself.)
But I do acknowledge he had or has actual talent. I'm not sure I can say that about his son, who's been obliterated by the other actors in every movie I've seen him in, even when he had the lead.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 8, 2022 8:58 AM |
R42- Wow, I have never paid much attention to him, but I am off to Google this now!! Thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 8, 2022 8:59 AM |
Charles Bronson! That's his name. Ugh. I forgot to mention an important one that ppl THINK is talented. She isn't. Marlene Dietrich. Ugly as sin, too. And Nicholas Cage is so damn annoying! I really can't stand to watch his films, except for Raising Arizona. And maybe Moonstruck. He still annoys me in that too, though.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 8, 2022 9:05 AM |
R43- I agree with you I really admired him at first and was very disappointed when he became smug and egotistical. He also really hit the wall hard with his looks.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 8, 2022 9:12 AM |
R45- His wife ruined every movie he was in, imo. Wooden actress, very dull.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 8, 2022 9:26 AM |
Charles Bronson was great in "Noon to Three" and that was it. He was the Steven Seagal (sp?) of his generation.

[quote]Charles Bronson was great in "Noon to Three" and that was it. He was the Steven Seagal (sp?) of his generation.
I wasn't a huge Charles Bronson fan, but he deserves better than to be called the Steven Seagal of his generation. Seagal was a Bronson wannabe whose movies were crap.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 8, 2022 7:49 PM |
A friend who saw Malkovich in “Burn This” said he was hot in it. Maybe he reads differently live than recorded. He was very good with Gary Sinise in the TV version of the Steppenwolf production of “True West,” which really made Malk a star. I preferred Sinise but who is and isn’t selected for fame is an unknowable process sometimes.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 8, 2022 8:11 PM |
Even though I think she’s a great actress, I loathe Cate Blanchett as a person. She comes across as superficial and DUMB.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 8, 2022 8:15 PM |
Of those still living and considered prestige - meaning award nominations and critical praise
Women: Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Glenda Jackson, Judi Dench, Jane Fonda, Jessica Lange, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Williams, Amy Adams, Kristen Stewart, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Isabelle Adjani, Rachel McAdams, Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Natalie Portman, Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon
Men: Alain Delon, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Rami Malek, Ryan Gosling, Eddie Redmayne, Kevin Kline, George Clooney, Matt Damon (except in Mr. Ripley), Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson (after 1975), Warren Beatty, Richard Dreyfuss,
Honestly, I hate most "prestige" actors born after 1970.
I can tolerate Frances McDormand, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laura Linney, Nicole Kidman, Kathleen Turner, and Debra Winger, but I don't get why they're so overpraised. I honestly barely register men on screen unless they're excellent or terrible.
A lot of the actors mentioned on this thread I really like. Of the living ones, I enjoy Jeff Goldblum, John Malkovich, Donald Sutherland Winona Ryder and Nicolas Cage in almost everything. Denzel Washington was great until the 2000s.
Of the dead ones, I absolutely detest Greer Garson, (post-code) Norma Sherarer, Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Harvey, Leslie Caron, Susan Hayward (except in VOTD), Loretta Young, Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, Debbie Reynolds (I like her as a person), James Dean, Kirk Douglas, Spencer Tracy, Gregory Peck (I love him as a person), and Laurence Olivier.

I am on board with loathing Gillian Anderson however I don't even think she's a good actress, I just don't see it and I think she's awful.
Eddie Redmayne (sp) grosses me out because he always needs chapstick and some water to drink.
Steve Carrol gives me the willies.

I hate the term “nepo baby” by the way. Nepotism alone can give somebody a bankable career for five years maximum. You actually have to be decent at acting after a trial run.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 9, 2022 8:55 PM |
R82 nepotism is huge in Hollywood but I have to disagree with your assessment of Dern. She's genuinely talented. Enlightened was a pitch perfect portrayal of a woman hooked on the " positive thinking" cult so prevalent in this culture. I'm so sad it didn't get more seasons.

I am rewatching Law and order svu and an episode just had Craig Bierko on it and I remembered that except for The Long Kiss Goodnight I don't like watching him. And when he smiles he has serious crazy face and crazy eyes.
