HBO Max's The Sex Lives of College Girls

Wow. This is the trailer of Mindy Kaling's new show on HBO Max. It features Gavin Leatherwood, the hottie from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

I just watched the first episode. Overall I liked it, but the lesbian scene at the end was like some straight male fantasy and not particularly realistic.

by Anonymousreply 1November 23, 2021 10:36 PM

Mindy Kaling is insufferable and derivative. Was the pitch for this Sex in the Sorority and ps there’s Diversity.

[quote] The Sex Lives of College Girls

Well, there's a title of a show guaranteed to generate about zero interest on DL.

by Anonymousreply 3November 23, 2021 10:43 PM

The sex lives of ugly college girls.

by Anonymousreply 4November 23, 2021 10:45 PM

Ratboy's sister is in this. Isn't that just great.

by Anonymousreply 5November 23, 2021 10:45 PM

Barf.

by Anonymousreply 6November 23, 2021 10:49 PM

There were a lot of cute guys in the trailer for this.

by Anonymousreply 7November 23, 2021 10:59 PM

Was very uneven. Sounded like 40 year olds writing for 18 year olds.

by Anonymousreply 8November 23, 2021 11:00 PM

Was it sexy?

Honestly, though, was it well written? I know DLers aren't exactly the market for a female "look at me and my sex life as a woman" show, but just objectively speaking. If you were in the market for this type of show, would you say that it was good?

I'd love a gay male version - that was a well written show with sex - balanced with good characters and arcs.

by Anonymousreply 9November 24, 2021 1:12 AM

Is Timmy’s sister any good in this?

by Anonymousreply 10November 24, 2021 1:55 AM

R10 It's hard to say. The writing is so terrible that it brings down everyone's performance. So many stereotypes. None of the characters seem like real people. I couldn't get through 15 minutes. It reminded me of an 80s sitcom. The writing was that subpar. Mindy can do so much better.

by Anonymousreply 11November 24, 2021 2:02 AM

Any penis sightings yet? The chubby kid on that Rosie show has been my favorite gratuitous HBO penis so far.

They are not "GIRLS"! They are womxn! And they don't have "sex lives"! They are VICTIMS of continuous wounding sexist misogynistic microaggressions and outright violent sexual assault on a daily basis!

Get with program, Mindy!

Am I the only person who loves this show?

by Anonymousreply 15December 3, 2021 7:43 PM

Chalamet's sister is probably one of the worst lead of any show in my memory. I have no words.

by Anonymousreply 16December 3, 2021 7:44 PM

I liked the first two eps, but I think it's been downhill since then. Everyone is a stereotype, I don't believe any of the relationships, and everything just feels like it's trying too hard. I still can't believe HBO canceled Generation, which was so much more realistic and so much better written and acted than this.

by Anonymousreply 17December 3, 2021 7:48 PM

I don't think HBO has room at the table for both Generation and Euphoria, and if they had to make a choice, I am glad they chose the show that they did.

by Anonymousreply 18December 3, 2021 7:52 PM

Also, the lead character on Generation was a gender-bending, gay Blatino who makes straight-As and captains the water polo team. Not exactly realistic, in my view.

by Anonymousreply 19December 3, 2021 7:53 PM

Generation is great and IMO different enough from Euphoria. I am bummed it was canceled.

by Anonymousreply 20December 3, 2021 7:55 PM

Ummm r13

by Anonymousreply 21December 3, 2021 8:14 PM

Any word on HBO’s We Are Who We Are? That show was so different that it felt like an old HBO show in the tradition of Oz with how weird it was.

Generation also suffered from have rather unattractive leads either personality wise or physicality. I know people say they want to see realistic people on TV, but rarely does one want to pay for the privilege of watching unfortunate looking teenagers.

I mean, talk about rough looking.

Yeah, those "I wanna real representation of me, me, me!" are strangely quiet when it comes to supporting such entertainment that usually gets canceled after one season. Ratings, legit streaming and downloads (no torrenting and other illegal file sharing) matter. Even more so for non-mainstream entertainment.

by Anonymousreply 25December 3, 2021 8:48 PM

The Sex Lives of College Girls is every bit as good as Emily In Paris.

by Anonymousreply 26December 4, 2021 3:41 AM

It's a fun and funny show.

I can't imagine the old white guys on Datalounge liking it.

by Anonymousreply 27December 4, 2021 5:26 AM

I watched the whole first season while in bed sick this weekend. It's a pretty easy watch. I found it neither awful nor great. It was good, "fine" -- some good and fun moments, other moments that were annoying.

I can see some DLers complaining about the diversity-wokeness aspect, but since the setting is a modern-day liberal arts college, it fit. I just do not understand why, in a show that is so diverse, it had the token-iest, not fully formed, out gay guy. The arcs are so telegraphed and bow-tied, yet I still liked it.

I actually liked Timothee's sister's character and the rich lesbian. And I liked the black soccer player, though I really wasn't too invested in her sleeping with the coach storyline. I went back and forth with the Indian comedy chick. She could be grating, but college women (and men too) are often grating.

So, again, overall it was okay - I watched the whole thing. I don't think I'd ever rewatch what I've seen. But, I'd check out a season 2.

by Anonymousreply 28December 12, 2021 9:37 PM

I found it strange in that I liked the performances, the jokes, and the individual episode plots - but the overall arcs for each of the four leads were the hackiest, lamest shit possible. Sex with a teacher (coach)! Coming out! Cheating! And of course, the Indian girl starting a comedy career - too specific for a show from Mindy Kaling. Hope they will get away from the cliches next season.

by Anonymousreply 29December 12, 2021 9:47 PM

The rich chick's coming out arc (and she's only come out to one person) was cliche, but still, I didn't mind it - especially when she's ranting about how she doesn't want it to define her and change her, which I thought did a good job of showing how scared and delusional she really was. Her out girlfriend saying she can't go backwards - also cliche - but real nevertheless.

KImberly and Nico's relationship/cheating arc - not much weight or depth. But I liked it just for showing how sexually exciting that time of your life can be. That dickmatized quick cuts scene made me laugh.

by Anonymousreply 30December 12, 2021 9:59 PM

Why would getting date-raped in a bathroom, contracting herpes and having to get an abortion be "the best years of their lives"?

by Anonymousreply 31December 12, 2021 10:03 PM

Clearly DL is no the target demographic for the show based on the comments so far, but I loved the show and am thrilled that the second season is already in the works.

by Anonymousreply 32December 12, 2021 10:07 PM

I would love the same show with gay men. And of course there would be plenty of sex and relationship stuff, but the broader arcs as well.

by Anonymousreply 33December 12, 2021 10:11 PM

Is this supposed to be Middlebury? Where was it filmed?

by Anonymousreply 34December 15, 2021 11:13 AM

Wait, we’re going to follow the same four girls the whole time? I was thinking we were going to follow a different suitemate of girls each episode. How is following four characters going to cover all the sex lives of college girls?

by Anonymousreply 35December 15, 2021 11:40 AM

It was filmed at Vassar, R34. Well, at least a lot of the establishing shots were Vassar and some of the outdoor scenes.

by Anonymousreply 36December 15, 2021 3:27 PM

For some reason (boredom), I continued watching this after the mediocre first episode, and I'm enjoying it now. It's like Golden Girls set in college. Not realistic but entertaining and sometimes funny. The cast is likable, including many of the supporting players. (Timothée's sister is much more charismatic than he is. She has an unassuming, down to earth quality he lacks.) So I take back my earlier criticism. It's a solid 3 out of 5.

by Anonymousreply 37December 18, 2021 2:24 AM

Timmy got all the looks in the family. His sister's plain. And she can't act.

by Anonymousreply 38December 18, 2021 2:27 AM

The title should be “The sex lives of ugly girls.”

by Anonymousreply 39December 18, 2021 2:30 AM

R38: How do you think she got the job in the first place?

by Anonymousreply 40December 18, 2021 2:47 AM

Isn’t she like thirty? I’m mean she’s not playing a high schooler, but still it’s only supposed to be a summer after high school. And does every freshman girl need to have sexual trauma and relationships abuse before the end of the first semester, is this really a Lens Dunham production in disguise?

by Anonymousreply 41December 18, 2021 7:52 AM

r34 and r36- all the interior scenes or close up exterior scenes were filmed in L.A.

by Anonymousreply 42December 18, 2021 4:56 PM

Chalamet is doing a Lens Dunham impression and the rich lesbian is starring in the Busy Phillips Story: The Early Years. For the hot guys and occasional male nudity, it's not sexy.

by Anonymousreply 43December 31, 2021 1:10 AM

The soft core porn shows should be on Cinemax

by Anonymousreply 44December 31, 2021 1:19 AM

Actually pretty cute, but if you binge the Indian girl becomes annoying as fuck. Something about the whole show seems so unfinished though. And when the hell did Jack Plotnik get so old??

by Anonymousreply 45February 13, 2022 5:21 PM

I was home sick today and binged the whole thing. Nothing groundbreaking, but I enjoyed it. Didn’t realized that was a Chalamet until I looked up the cast list. She’s fine. The rich lesbian looks like another actress, but I can’t think of who it is.

by Anonymousreply 47February 23, 2022 4:35 AM

Just finished all available episodes and found it terrific. During each episode, I kept rewatching one or more jokes. I haven’t had to do that with other series. I’m hooked.

by Anonymousreply 48November 19, 2022 7:11 AM

I enjoyed the first season enough, but haven't been motivated to start the second.

by Anonymousreply 49November 19, 2022 4:00 PM

[quote] Any word on HBO’s We Are Who We Are

This show was awful and I really wanted to like it. I kept sticking with it and finally, probably before the big payoff, whatever that was, I couldn't take it anymore. The pacing was just so slow and I hated the lead kid. I love Chloe but hated her in this.
