Gay Film “1985” - any of you seen it?

It looks very good! Love the black & white, adds an artistic touch I like, and adds to the mood.

Here is the synopsis:

Having been gone for three years, closeted advertising executive Adrian (Cory Michael Smith, of TV’s Gotham) returns to his Texas hometown for the holidays during the first wave of the AIDS crisis. Burdened with an unspeakable tragedy in New York City, Adrian looks to reconnect with his preteen brother, Andrew (Aidan Langford), while navigating his relationship with religious parents Eileen (Academy Award nominee Virginia Madsen) and Dale (Golden Globe award winner Michael Chiklis). When he reaches out to his estranged childhood friend Carly (Jamie Chung, The Gifted), their unresolved issues force Adrian to confront an uncertain future that will significantly alter the lives of those around him. Shot on black-and-white Super 16mm film, 1985 takes a unique look at a pivotal moment in American history through the prism of empathy, love and family.

I want to watch it. It looks great. I’ve always found Virginia Madsen to be an interesting actress.

by Anonymousreply 1November 16, 2021 10:11 PM

The UK trailer. Similar but a better trailer.

by Anonymousreply 2November 16, 2021 10:11 PM

I just bought it from Amazon.

by Anonymousreply 3November 16, 2021 10:13 PM

It's very well done, there is a lot to relate to if originate from the Midwest.

by Anonymousreply 4November 16, 2021 10:19 PM

It’s set in Texas.

by Anonymousreply 5November 16, 2021 10:21 PM

looks tiresome as it recycles what's been done from An Early Frost (1985) on

by Anonymousreply 6November 16, 2021 10:26 PM

No it looks very different, and that actor is very soulful.

by Anonymousreply 7November 16, 2021 10:28 PM

R7 sounds the same and because it's in b&w it does indeed look different

by Anonymousreply 8November 16, 2021 10:30 PM

I can’t wait to see it.

by Anonymousreply 9November 16, 2021 10:40 PM

Cory Michael-Smith is often the best thing about whatever he's in. He was excellent in Olive Kitteridge.

by Anonymousreply 10November 16, 2021 10:43 PM

Sorry, his name is apparently not hyphenated, my bad.

by Anonymousreply 11November 16, 2021 10:47 PM

Chiklis the hot bald Daddy? Wonder what he looks like now.

by Anonymousreply 12November 16, 2021 10:53 PM

Treacly, by the numbers and cheap looking. Compare with 'Belfast' where the beautiful b&w seemed right.

by Anonymousreply 13November 16, 2021 10:55 PM

Belfast has a bigger budget. This was a small indie film and it looks wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 14November 16, 2021 10:57 PM

Despite a smaller budget the b&w seems unjustified artistically and aesthetically ugly. It looks and sounds dreary.

by Anonymousreply 15November 16, 2021 11:05 PM

It’s a dreary film and has a lot to do with AIDS. The look and tone fit.

by Anonymousreply 16November 16, 2021 11:06 PM

It's NOT a comedy.

by Anonymousreply 17November 16, 2021 11:06 PM

Unfortunately, it's dreary in every sense of the word. So unoriginal and so flat.

by Anonymousreply 18November 16, 2021 11:10 PM

How about you watch the movie before trashing it? Jesus.

by Anonymousreply 19November 16, 2021 11:11 PM

R19 anyone over the age of 12 has already seen this film in one form or another since 1985. Longtime Companion, Angels in America, It's My Party, Jeffrey, Torch Song Trilogy, An Early Frost, And the Band Played On and on and on and on . . .

by Anonymousreply 20November 16, 2021 11:20 PM

R20 then don’t watch. That’s fine. But you don’t need to be on this thread bitching and moaning either.

by Anonymousreply 21November 16, 2021 11:21 PM

There can only be one film about any gay topic ever. R20 has STATED HER BOUNDARIES.

by Anonymousreply 22November 16, 2021 11:25 PM

Where can I find this, OP? The trailer said it's from 2018.

by Anonymousreply 23November 16, 2021 11:27 PM

According to JustWatch, it's streaming on the free streaming service Tubi and available to rent on Amazon, Google Play, etc.

by Anonymousreply 24November 16, 2021 11:29 PM

Yes. It’s on Tubi for free.

by Anonymousreply 25November 16, 2021 11:31 PM

R20 I won't be watching

'Adrian is too flat a character and his plight too generic' SLANT MAGAZINE

'There's little that's new here' MOVIE NATION

'the acting in 1985 is like the script-stiff' ' the film still feels a lot like a sermon' SCREEN DAILY

by Anonymousreply 26November 16, 2021 11:31 PM

I knew 1985.1985 was colorful.1985 was a friend of mine. You're no1985.

by Anonymousreply 27November 16, 2021 11:32 PM

So you’re not going to watch because of a few bad reviews, while ignoring the positives mentioned in reviews?

by Anonymousreply 28November 16, 2021 11:33 PM

R22 how about a gay film not about aids

by Anonymousreply 29November 16, 2021 11:37 PM

Just the other day, Gen Z was trending on Twitter for saying on national television that there had been no stigma attached to AIDS in the 80s. There aren't enough films about AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 30November 16, 2021 11:39 PM

R28 I saw the trailer and it's so derivative besides I just saw a film from 1985 recently The Early Frost covered the same ground over 3 decades ago as this from 2018. How about something new and original and up to date? Does every film about gays have to deal with AIDS? The times have changed but filmmakers are still rehashing the same old story.

by Anonymousreply 31November 16, 2021 11:43 PM

Thanks for sharing, OP. I’ll definitely check it out!

by Anonymousreply 32November 16, 2021 11:44 PM

R30 yeah, just like we need more films about slavery!

by Anonymousreply 33November 16, 2021 11:56 PM

[quote]during the first wave of the AIDS crisis.

Which wasn't in 1985 but 1981-2.

by Anonymousreply 34November 16, 2021 11:59 PM

Wow. This looks very good. Will have to watch.

Thanks OP

by Anonymousreply 35November 17, 2021 12:10 AM

I am going to watch tomorrow

by Anonymousreply 36November 17, 2021 2:55 AM

It looks okay. There's nothing in those trailers that say great!

Not yet at least.

Shill/OP.

by Anonymousreply 37November 17, 2021 3:07 AM

OP has 10 replies alone in this thread. 11 when he replies to me. Calm down, OP!

by Anonymousreply 38November 17, 2021 3:09 AM

[quote]It looks okay. There's nothing in those trailers that say great!

It's not meant to be "great".

by Anonymousreply 39November 17, 2021 7:37 AM

R39 if it was meant to be mediocre, then I'd say it's a success.

by Anonymousreply 40November 17, 2021 7:52 AM

It was OK but it is hard to beat films made during that era.

by Anonymousreply 41November 17, 2021 8:35 AM

I usually hate the amateurish and maudlin "gay films" of today -- but i really did like this little gem. Very low-key, honest, believable. It felt like a window to a small-town America that is no longer here. It's one of those good little dramas they don't make anymore.

by Anonymousreply 42November 17, 2021 8:47 AM

OP = "preteen brother".......(((sigh))))....Here we go again....

by Anonymousreply 43November 17, 2021 8:53 AM

The hater should maybe just not watch it. I’m not understanding why they’re going on and on.

by Anonymousreply 44November 17, 2021 6:55 PM

^ are you a publicist? Why are you going on and on?

by Anonymousreply 45November 17, 2021 9:26 PM

Watched it today, it’s very sad. I liked the look of it and was positively surprised by Jamie Chung. Loved the actress who played the mother as well. The movie is gonna stay with me for awhile, I think.

by Anonymousreply 46November 18, 2021 9:31 PM

R46 it’s a lovely film. Very sad.

by Anonymousreply 47November 19, 2021 12:41 AM

i'm half way through. I watch films like I read a novel, I put them down and come back. I haven't taken to his Korean gurlfriend at all - I can hardly understand a word she says, I'm sure Americans don't have this same problem.

by Anonymousreply 48November 19, 2021 1:21 AM

and she does stand-up comedy and she's REALLY unfunny.

by Anonymousreply 49November 19, 2021 1:22 AM

R49 to be fair, many stand-up comics aren’t that funny

by Anonymousreply 50December 9, 2021 2:58 AM

I can't relate to the younger gay generation depicted in the movie.

by Anonymousreply 51December 9, 2021 3:09 AM

Just the trailer was enough to smell shitty marginal acting.

by Anonymousreply 52December 9, 2021 4:08 AM

Exactly how many shills are typing on this thread?

by Anonymousreply 53December 9, 2021 4:09 AM

Yes, this black and white indie film from three years ago has a virtually unlimited budget to pay people posting on an anonymous, obscure gay message board.

by Anonymousreply 54December 9, 2021 4:22 AM

At least I'm not a sparkle pony consumer of treacle. I guess there's not accounting for taste. Moi luv this saaaaaad movie sooooo much. The actor is SOULFUL.

R22 the problem is so many 'gay' films cover the same topic as if gay lives were about AIDs and coming out to your stereotypically strait-laced family as you partner bemoans the fact that you haven't told them and feels left out! This is a film made circa 2018 that takes place in the 80s and for a reason!

by Anonymousreply 56December 9, 2021 4:47 AM

[quote] “1985” - any of you seen it?

Honey, we LIVED it.

by Anonymousreply 57December 9, 2021 5:06 AM

Yawn...I can always count on DL to apprise me of some random kid (usually around puberty age) they spot in a movie...Seriously, grow up. I saw people drooling over Boeberts little kids in a thread yesterday. Some of you really have issues.

She says CASHMERE like he gave her rubies from Chaumet.

by Anonymousreply 59December 9, 2021 5:39 AM

Because back then Cashmere was considered some super elegant and high class material.

Didn’t Seinfeld have an entire episode about a cashmere sweater in the 90s?

by Anonymousreply 60December 9, 2021 4:41 PM

Cashmere in the 80s and 90s was something super elegant and rarified? I remember in the 60s my grandmother, who was working class, a seamstress, but always well dressed, had cashmere sweaters. And some fur stoles and capes.

by Anonymousreply 61December 9, 2021 4:45 PM

R61. Cashmere has always been a luxury material

by Anonymousreply 62December 9, 2021 5:50 PM

Of course its luxury but her reaction is so overblown. It's an expensive sweater, not Ed McMahon with the Publisher's Clearing House 1,000,000 dollar check.

by Anonymousreply 63December 9, 2021 5:58 PM

Aren’t they from a small town in TX? She is probably not used to that stuff
