As the OP of the other thread (2 minutes later) I'll say here what I said there - it's well and truly a soap opera now. They already did the "Granny has a past" bit with the Russian guy. Now this. I believe this is known as a "retcon."

They should have done a prequel and had it set in the 1870's when Lord Grantham was a boy and his mother was a young woman.

Her character has to be in her late 90's by now. Which would be unusual but not unheard of for the time period.

I have to say they paired Mary up with a very boring character. They should have hooked her up with Charles Blake (?) I think that was his name.

I think they're playing a blinder. I think it's Carson who dies, possibly Robert, maybe Mary's tedious lame ass second husband. But as long as there's any chance they can get Maggie to Maggie, I would be surprised if they kill her off.

R11 - I'm sure I remember reading that Julian Ovenden, who played Charles Blake, left the show earlier than Julian Fellowes had hoped. That may explain why the Mary/Henry romance was so rushed. A comment I read on reddit summed it up well: "Mary had more chemistry with Matthew's grave than she had with Henry."

Matthew Goode isn't in any of the shots in the trailer or the character list at the end. I think Lady Mary's death vagina may strike again.

I think he lost weight because of/during COVID... probably afraid he was too fat and old to survive it under his bigger weight but I really think he looks best with some pounds on him.

Henry Talbot doesn't need to be there, that's for sure.

There will probably be weird absences due to COVID. Already it's interesting to see how everyone is spaced and placed in the trailer.

They should bring Spratt back and have Hannah Waddingham play Denker's replacement (so that Higgins and Rebecca from Ted Lasso are playing against one another).

I have to wonder how very old people are motivated to keep working this hard. I understand they love their craft and the money is great, but if it were me and I had the option to enjoy my last years on earth not dealing with the daily grind, I definitely would. Because I love the Grand Canyon and Hawaii as much as the next gay but I have a heard time imagining Aunt Julian could imagine even an unconvincing way to get the Crawleys to either destination. Sad that they won’t continue Thomas’ romance from the first film. I was hoping Ed Speeler’s character would give Thomas a pity fuck after he softened to him during the series. Or they could have brought back the lovely Charlie Cox for a hate fuck or even let chunky Tom have some fun in his early windower years. So many missed opportunities for hot man love.

My prediction: Two weddings and a funeral plot. Tom's upstairs wedding and perhaps a Daisy/Andy or Baxter/Moseley downstairs wedding. Then they come home from France and find Violet is taking her last breaths.

The problem is that the show's Boomer fans may still be shunning movie theaters in March. These people would watch a screen-saver for two hours if it was attached to the Downton Abbey franchise.

Michelle Dockery must feel like crap that she can't escape this role. She was supposed to be the break-out star. Why did Julian Overn bail? Not enough musical numbers? It looks like Dan Stevens made the right move, not because he's become a big star here but because his various projects make him a lot more money than he would on the BBC.

The new trailer. No sign of Henry Talbot, and there's a hint of a flirtation between Lady Mary and another man. Also looks as though Thomas might get some action.

I would love for Lady Violet to say something about having a room with a view. Perhaps they can fast-forward to the 1960s and either Edith or Mary is played by Dame Maggie. That would be a great way to end the franchise.

I saw the actor who plays Lord Merton on Prime in a show from the late seventies called The Duchess of Duke Street. He was handsome, no surprise.

The premise of a film being shot at Downton seems ridiculous to me (if meta.) Can't imagine an aristocrat agreeing. They were barely opening their houses then. As usual, Fellowes tries to cram too much in to ensure each one of the hundred characters gets a full two minutes of dialogue.
