The original film starring Tyrone Power is creepy, sexy, suspenseful and beautifully filmed in b&w. I understand why some movies are updated to reflect the times but carnivals, geeks, and freaks are things of the past which can't be duplicated in the present. I get all the remakes of "A Star is Born" -- each one represents a different era. I can't imagine any actor in the remake of Nightmare Alley being better than the original. There are so many movies that could benefit from a remake, why choose this one?
Nightmare Alley -- Why the remake?

I don’t know. Guillermo Del Toro’s new partner, (movie blogger Kim Morgan, was previously married to Guy Maddin) wrote the screenplay. She has done some film noir commentaries

Tyrone Power is great in that role. It required someone very physically beautiful, and he had it. He seemed to relish playing such a conniving heel. The supporting cast was excellent. Such a great film.
Here is a good discussion of him in this role.

a decent stream of 1947 original on youtube..........Nightmare Alley is a 1947 film noir starring Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell, and directed by Edmund Goulding. The film is based on the 1946 novel of the same name, written by William Lindsay Gresham.Power, wishing to expand beyond the romantic and swashbuckler roles that brought him to fame, bought the rights to the novel so he could star as the unsavory lead, "The Great Stanton", a scheming carnival barker. The film premiered in the United States on October 9, 1947, then went into wide release on October 28, 1947, later having six more European releases between November 1947 to May 1954. Plot The movie follows the rise and fall of a con man—a story that begins and ends at a seedy traveling carnival
