I was just scrolling through the latter part, and I noticed that Sada Thompson's has a different porthole, or whatever it is, than the rest. And "M-M-M-Mel Tillis"? RUDE!
Also, WHET Shelley Smith?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 10, 2021 10:45 PM |
Sorry, that was Renee Taylor, not Sada Thompson, surrounded by a swirl instead of a life preserver.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 10, 2021 10:46 PM |
Sada also was surrounded by the swirl I believe. The last couple seasons they redesigned the credits and theme song with that Psycho Friend singing it.

Sheesh 46 minutes? Any highlights?

by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 10, 2021 11:00 PM |
A really young Adam Arkin!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 10, 2021 11:05 PM |
It's alphabetical. I watched for 7 minutes and they were still in the Bs!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 10, 2021 11:08 PM |
I can't believe it's 46 minutes long, but I can't stop watching. Goddamn you, OP!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 10, 2021 11:09 PM |
Fun to see Jill Whelan as a guest star before she joined the cast, and Lauren Tewes as one after she was fired from the cast.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 10, 2021 11:12 PM |
Eleanor Parker was on The Love Boat??! How did I not know this?! I must see this episode immediately.

Halston??? WTF.
Poor Sandy Dennis and Colleen Dewhurst. Well, a paycheck is a paycheck.
Tori Spelling was one ugly kid.
I guess this show and Murder She Wrote kept all those older stars going.
I'll echo Sylvia - damn you OP!

by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 10, 2021 11:53 PM |
I'm imagining Roddy McDowall, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Dick Sargent as the ship's resident DLers, hissing at the tacky passengers.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 10, 2021 11:54 PM |
Can you imagine the fun if Olivia and Joan were in the same episode? The set would have been like an Arctic cruise.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 10, 2021 11:55 PM |
This was fun to watch until I realized that 80% of these people are now dead.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 10, 2021 11:57 PM |
This belongs in the fucking Smithsonian! No, I'm not joking. OK, maybe the MOMA. They can cat fight it out. Be sure to give the poster some sweet thumbs up and shares. I hope it doesn't get taken down for copyright/licensing restrictions. WATCH WHILE YOU CAN!

Menudo with Little Ricky Martin!
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 11, 2021 12:12 AM |
God Bless Aaron Spelling. His claptrap kept so many actors working and fed. Hint, turn off the music after a while.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 11, 2021 12:15 AM |
Yea, who can listen to that theme music for 46 minutes, that is torture! And like someone else said, who has time to sit through the whole thing (even if you double the speed)?
My only real complaint though is that they didn't include the all the intros for repeat offenders like Flo Henderson (yes, I realize that would extend the runtime even longer, but still, for posterity).
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 11, 2021 12:25 AM |

Gene Kelly with bad "Asian cat eyes" plastic surgery. He was in a two-parter late in the series--the cast included Donna Reed (shortly before her death), Yvette Mimieux (one of the many over the hill ex-starlets like Carol Lynley and Jill St John in this series), Brenda Vaccaro, Herb Edelman, and Lee Majors. Cruise Director Lauren Tewes is a shopaholic--I wonder if it was a way to work her addiction into the plot. Mimieux was Gene Kelly's love interest. Donna Reed was stuck with human lumber Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.

The entire cast of Matchgame
Most of the cast of The Poseidon Adventure (you'd think letting them board might give the other passengers PTSD)
The whole cast (except The Professor) of Gilligan's Island (would anyone want to go on a cruise with THEM?)
Most of the cast of The Brady Bunch (were they sailing to Hawaii?}

I'm not really surprised by the presence of Oscar winners and other Hollywood legends. The show was schlock, but, rather than it being a case of "How the mighty have fallen," I bet it was fun for the old-timers to take a cruise, do a little work, and see friends. Probably the last credit for a good many of them.

For R136.
[quote]The Love Boat clinched its key guest-star demographic by offering free cruises to the actors, who were also invited to bring their families. Consequently, as early as its third episode, The Love Boat featured guest stars like Spelling favorites Kristy McNichol and Scott Baio; in another story, M*A*S*H*’s Hot Lips Houlihan (Loretta Swit) is married to Soap’s Burt (Richard Mulligan) but runs into her ex—the former Mr. Mike Brady (Robert Reed)—onboard the Pacific Princess. The novelty of so many familiar faces bumping into each other was enough to draw viewers. Spelling remembers, “After the show was a hit, agents started calling us.”

R151 The majority of the show was only done on a soundstage but they did do special shows where they actually shot on location. Some of the guest stars have different backgrounds/rings around them and they were from some of those special episodes.
What's with the snooty airs and pitying remarks about "those poor stars reduced to doing such dreck"? It was a HUGE hit show and as someone mentioned earlier, actors were lining up to do this show, especially the old timers who loved getting back on a sound stage. And, many of those old time stars were grouped in special episodes so it was old home week for many of them, getting to see people they hadn't worked with for decades.
The Love Boat was silly, fun junk. If you sneer at it, why are you on this thread?

People I didn't think were working as actors then: Tony Dow, Edd Byrnes, Jane Wyatt, Annette Funicello, Tab Hunter (this was no John Waters vehicle)
People who were having their 15 minutes in the 70s: Robert Hegyes, Ron Polillo, Adrian Zmed
People on their way up (but who knew): Tom Hanks, Kathy Bates, Morgan Fairchild
It looks like all the women had the same hair stylist, which a little bit of variation in the helmet hairdo by age; ditto the men.

Most of Aaron Spelling's cast from 'Dynasty' had it in their contracts that they had to appear on an ep of 'The Love Boat'. Linda Evans did 3 or 4 eps (and at least a couple of two-parters where they filmed on location overseas). All that to say, Joan Collins adamantly didn't want to do an ep, but Spelling held her to her contract. She did a one-off ep as a haughty movie star (meta much?) who was supposed to seduce Captain Stubing. Joan refused to kiss Gavin MacLeod because she claimed he had herpes. So they merely shared a passionate hug on the deck.
The ep that Marie Osmond did was filmed on location in Italy, and Shelley Winters played her mum. Marie thought Shelley hated her the whole trip, as she'd make snide remarks to her face and behind her back. They finally made up towards the end of the trip/location shoot, and Shelley blamed her catty remarks on being plastered the entire time.

I couldn't sit through all 46 minutes. But the theme was grating on the nerves. Then it occurred to me why. It was recorded in mono - stereo television audio was still several years away. When you think of how much tech went into TV it's almost mind boggling.
Think about it remember who won the color TV war - it was RCA. CBS backed the color-wheel system which would have preserved backward compatibility with black and white TV but the screen sizes were seriously limited. That is why the all electronic RCA system won out. And of course the NTSC standard or Never The Same Color ruled for many years.

She played a cunty tween tv star that stupid Vicki was enthralled with. Vicki sort of befriends her and then becomes her understudy, all while cunty Allison is making fun of Vicki behind her back. By the end of the epi Allison sees the error of her ways and the two become true friends.
The best part of this episode was that DL fave Nancy Kulp played Allison's spinster aunt/guardian! You could tell that Nancy's heart just wasn't in this episode, though.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | November 11, 2021 11:49 PM |
r213, Vicky wasn't her understudy. She was her "stunt" double doing the parts Allison didn't want to do herself, like getting buckets of water splashed in her face. When the producer compliments Vicky for being such a good sport and maybe having her own show someday, Allison sees her as a threat to her own career, pulls rank and forces the producer to fire Vicky on the spot.

Season 3, Episode 8:
[quote] A stuffy executive loosens up and falls in love with his secretary; a songwriter rekindles a wife's love for her husband; Captain Stubing takes charge of the orphaned child of his former love; a stern Russian cruise director gets a new image, to Doc's delight.
Sandy Beal (Jo Anne Worley) is a secretary secretly in love with her boss Victor Marshall (Soupy Sales). The two of them get drunk at an office party and wind up taking an "Accidental Cruise." In "The Song Has Ended," Charlie Godwin (Robert Goulet) is a former songwriter now unhappily married and working for an advertising agency. Once they board the ship, Charlie and his wife June (Juliet Mills) encounter his former partner Burt Buchanan (Richard Dawson), who has gone on to garner more fame than he had with Charlie. "A Time for Everything" reunites Captain Stubing with Dolores (Sandra Deel), whose sister Georgina was an old flame of Stubing's and died eight months earlier, leaving Georgina's daughter Vicki (Jill Whelan) in Dolores' care. Miss "Anoushka" Mishancov (Loretta Swit), the vodka-loving Commissar of Cruise Vessels for the Soviet Union, is on board and falls for Doc, after persuading Julie to help her become "slinky."

Why would it have been more difficult than any other show? Most hour long TV shows will have several guest stars per episode. The vast majority of actors they hired as guest stars were TV professionals. It was a TV show that filmed in Hollywood on a soundstage....now, the special, shot on location episodes were probably a chore to coordinate. But, there's really not that many of them.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | November 12, 2021 10:25 AM |
Aaron Spelling had developed the "cast of big name guest star" idea with Burke's Law in the 60s, where it was basically one day's work for clients of the William Morris agency. Douglas Cramer, who produced "Love American Style" before he produced "Love Boat" had done something similar, except it was episodic and probably had a bigger budget. The expertise was there to do this kind of format and it probably was sold as "Love American Style" on water. Cramer had been an executive at ABC before he worked for Spelling (and before his time at Paramount) so he also knew how to deal with the network. He was gay, you know.

[quote]Why would it have been more difficult than any other show? Most hour long TV shows will have several guest stars per episode.
Someone posted an interesting article in this thread about this. I don't really see what's complex about the three intertwined storylines, but the constant travel of a continually changing cast does seem more complicated than the average show.
[quote] a monumental exercise in controlled chaos, in which almost 15 tons of equipment, 300 crew members, numerous high-voltage guest stars, three interwoven plot lines, and the governments of numerous foreign countries had to regularly be controlled, organized, appeased, and made sense of week after week. Customs agents had to be paid off, lovers’ quarrels… patched up, guests stars flown in and out, and new locations constantly scouted. On top of that, each episode had three story lines: the “heart” story, the “tears” story, and the “laughs” story, all of which had to be somehow melded into a cohesive plot. And every show had to have an appeal to the three major age groups; a guest star like June Allyson would be hauled in for the older group, a Tom Selleck type would be brought in for the young adults, and somebody from a kids’ show, like Eight Is Enough, would be shoehorned in to the plot to attract the youngsters. To [the producers], doing Love Boat had seemed like waging a weekly World War III.

Only a few episodes were shot on a boat and that was leter in its run. In the early seasons all were done on a soundstage. Douglas Cramer, the producer had experience with a "Love, American Style" which had similarities.

[quote]Eleanor Parker deserves to be remembered for more than her guest appearances on The Love Boat.
In addition to "The Sound of Music," I remember her equally from "Caged," the mother of all women-behind-bars movies. Eleanor plays a young innocent thrown into a corrupt prison system who ends up corrupted herself. I love her parting shot when she's finally sprung, with the help of some mobsters: "I certainly got myself an education." In the final scene, when asked what should be done with Eleanor's file, non-corrupt prison superintendent Agnes Moorehead says, sadly, "Keep it active. She'll be back."

-Sammy Davis Jr

-Justine Bateman
-Jason Bateman
-Bette Davis (though she thought Spelling productions were trash after appearing on the pilot of 'Hotel')

A few minutes into the video (during the B-names) my mind started going there with The Facts of Life -- as I knew Charlotte Rae, Lisa Whelchel, Nancy McKeon & Cloris Leachman were all going to show up eventually. So, I started it over and began counting. (SMH)
I might have missed someone, but all these Love Boaters appeared on Facts of Life:
Roberta Alda, Richard Dean Anderson, John Astin, Conrad Bain, Jimmy Baio, Orson Bean, Clark Brandon, Todd Bridges, Woody Brown, Charo, Kim Darby, Ja'net DuBois, Fabian, Zsa-Zsa Gabor, Jay Johnson, Bill Macy, Robert Mandan, Lois Nettleton, Dana Plato, Eve Plumb, Clive Revill, Alex Rocco, Dick Van Patten, and Sal Viscuso

That Love Boat pilot movie credits is interesting as the cast for the crew was completely overhauled for the show.

It's funny how so many people are appalled that these poor actors were FORCED to do this awful show!
Uh, I doubt anyone was forced though maybe a couple were coherced a bit (Joan Collins, though, why would she sneer at an easy gig?)
Again, it was a hugely popular show and an easy gig and paycheck. And, the majority of TV actors were used to and sought out guesting on shows. Pre cable TV and all those new channels needing content, this was a very viable way to work. If you had skills to do live theater, you went out and did summer stock/dinner theater AND you did guest roles on TV.
And, while they didn't do Love Boat, big name actors like Carroll O'Connor and Alan Alda and even Landon did guest on other shows. O'Connor and Landon both did Laugh-In and Alda did the Carol Burnett Show. Even Mary Tyler Moore did guest spots....when she was older and no longer in her prime.

I am watching a Season 8 episode on Paramount Plus with guest passengers Delta Burke (very skinny), Doug Barr and Julia Duffy 🤯! And Doug and Julia are romantically paired! Don’t tell Charlene!!!

[quote]Most of Aaron Spelling's cast from 'Dynasty' had it in their contracts that they had to appear on an ep of 'The Love Boat'.
Dynasty.- The Love Boat

Julie your cruse director did a line of coke between each guest shot, now she's ready to sail.

The only reason I endured those old washed up actors in there golden years was for the occasional shots by the pool where "average straight guy" would saunter by in a speedo. I used to think I was a young gaying with a little secret for wanting to watch Love Boat. Now I realize it was all by design. Well played casting directors, well played.
