I watched this last night, and it struck me how internalized he is. I get it, as I can be the same way, and I think that I have a better understanding of his relationship with Chasten, as Chasten seems to be able to draw him out of his shell.

One thing that really struck me was the two moments that he really came alive - helping with a pivot table, and playing Triominos. We already know that he is prone to wonkishness, but for me those scenes confirmed that that is where he is happiest.

I do believe that he wants to be of use to people, and to help make the country a better place, but I think he would be happiest as an analyst, working in a think tank, or some other behind the scenes job where he could truly embrace his nerdy side.

Pete isn’t taking money from Amazon and the documentary wasn’t filmed during his job in the Biden Administration. The filmmaker (who made Boys State) was looking for a new project and his assistant recommended following Pete, who had just announced his very underdog campaign for President, along with his small handful of campaign staff. Pete is the subject of the project, not the owner of it, and doesn’t profit from it being sold to Amazon or have any control over how it’s sold. (In fact, there are some indications Pete and Chasten don’t want anything to do with it—they aren’t doing any interviews about it or participating in press for it.)

Politico mentions a couple things that are surprisingly not included, including Pete dealing with his dad’s death (which happened just before filming) and no mention of the tension within Pete’s campaign about its treatment of black staff.

I watched the documentary last night. It was fine but disappointingly standard running for president fare. It didn't excite me and it didn't show me much except that Pete is a tremendously controlled individual and I would guess always will be. The prepublicity about how Chasten ended up taking over the big sit down piece makes sense. There's not much there to work with... I think the pre-press was the documentary maker essentially saying 'don't blame me.'

He was not letting loose for anybody but there was a hint he may open up more with Chasten in private. The thing was so dull and so usual the shot of his belly hair was honestly about the most unexpected and exciting thing in it. Although once he may have said bullshit or one of the minor swear words. It wasn't bad dull but this was plainly a standoff between a filmmaker and a human wall, so it was more a constant question of will he let the guard down? By the end the answer is no, so there may be your Pete Buttgieg story right there. I'm not quite sure why they did it. It doesn't harm his prospects but I struggle to see how it particularly advances them, either.

There were precious few insights into the man via other people, though Chasten had a lot to say. If it wasn't for him the film really would have been watching paint dry. His mother, for example, is a silent background figure. The political staff spoke semi-frequently but hardly anybody who knows the man. It did paint an effective picture of the energy and price he paid in the closet and it got near the reasons he did what he did and the reasons he abandoned it, but there was no grief, no anger, no feeling. It.all.just.made.a.kind.of.clinical.sense. It was interesting to me that the only time I saw what I would have considered a flash of emotion - I believe it was a wavering voice but there may have been wet eyes - was when he was delivering a speech and paraphrasing a line Chasten had supplied him speaking to all the gay kids out there.

By the end you can conclude that as a person he is unlikely to ever share his feelings meaningfully. Politically he's no Obama or Bill Clinton or anybody charismatic, though he is a very good speechmaker and debater. Still, it felt like the wall was always there and elegance and cleverness of the speech construction was always a bit too perfect... it appeared it came from a need to deliver the best speech yet, not from the heart.

If he ever wins the presidency he will be presumably be among the most intelligent people ever to have the office and I can't imagine there will ever be a decision made in the heat of the moment. You can draw some conclusion about what matters to him but you never get a sense of what he [italic]feels[/italic]. Obama, for example, truly (naively and to little political effect) believed in the hopey change thing. PB's passion wasn't evident, it didn't really appear to be there or about anything and I doubt it ever will be. It appeared to me what he believes is he has an intelligence worthy of the office and he's probably right. But in the end I didn't care if PB becomes president, I didn't particularly feel a passion for him as a candidate, I didn't especially want to know him as a person and if he becomes president great and if not, oh well. There is something missing in the guy and it may not be a bad absence or a flawed absence but it is a noticeable absence.

There were two hilarious moments, when he was delivering during the debate and absolutely knocked Warren and Klobuchar on their asses. You could see neither of their wheels could spin fast enough to catch up.

With the Klob she was banging on about the who does that experience thing and he just whomped her with 'I am used to senators telling me they're more important than mayors and mayors aren't in the arena, but guess what, we are, we're living real life.' All she could do was that Amy 'aw, fuck' semi smile. The Klob seemed to have a team behind her that could set up the line but never thought through the comeback and, prosecutor or not, she doesn't have a brain that is particularly fast on its feet when dealing with someone she thinks less of... and her disdain for this little mayor presuming to seek the nomination was evident. I bet she still hates him.

With Warren she was in full self-righteous fury and dropped the wine cave line and he came back with 'I'm running for President. I need to meet donors and I would point out that according to Forbes I am the only person on this stage who is not a millionaire or a billionaire.' You could see Warren absolutely snapping with rage at being zapped, she was so obviously indignant, blink, swallow, blink, swallow, blink, blink. It was one of those moments where you saw how her personality made her so unsuited for campaigning for president. Principled and intelligent woman but perpetually that kid in class who put up her hand every time. When Pete took her own gotcha and trapped her with it, it was hilarious.

I supported Pete in 2020 because because of his intellect, prepared answers, and optimistic energy. Him being in a gay marriage didn't shape my view of him as to his skills and abilities. I liked his centrist stances. He's not perfect, but no politician has perfection.

The shrilling rhetoric and targeted pandering from Warren, Sanders, and a few other try-outs, got annoying fast.
