I’m sitting here thinking about my favorite (unsung) Angel - Tiffany Welles from Boston.
Shelley Hack as Tiffany Welles in Charlie’s Angels

This has become like Rick & Ilsa at the airport
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 7, 2021 9:15 PM |
Charlie should have gotten rid of that damned Pinto at the same time they were rid of Sabrina Duncan!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 7, 2021 9:31 PM |
The Townsend Agency must have been a shitty place to work. Driving an outdated Ford Pinto in 1980 would have been a deal breaker for moi. Poor Tiffany!!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 7, 2021 9:35 PM |
Obviously Ford was paying for product placement. Seems silly to keep using that Pinto.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 7, 2021 9:39 PM |
Yeah no shit, r5. They were not even making the Pinto in 1980.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 7, 2021 9:40 PM |
They could have at least issued Tiffany a Ford Escort instead of that fucking 1976 orange Pinto.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 7, 2021 9:41 PM |
I hope Charlie provided health insurance.

Murray Kempton, TV critic for Newsday, Long Island’s newspaper, always referred to her TV appearances as “ a real hack job”.

Let’s see…. Where is Murray now? Dead most likely.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 7, 2021 9:54 PM |
Tiffany was so sophisticated. I can’t believe she was replaced by the shoplifting model cum PI Julie Rogers!!

Oh great, another OCD Stan. And how we've fallen, from Capucine and Liv Ullmann, to Shelley Hack.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 7, 2021 10:10 PM |
I loved me some Shelley Hack minus some of her straw-like hairstyles during the first half of her season. They magically were able to infuse some Alberto V05 hot oil into her during the second half.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 11, 2022 1:20 PM |
They didn't replace the cars because they would have to reshoot the establishing shots in front of the office and Spelling was too cheap to do that
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 11, 2022 2:05 PM |
Spelling was an asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 11, 2022 5:36 PM |
Ford was the sponsor. Jacklyn got the Mustang, Cheryl got the Granada coupe, and poor Shelley got stuck with the Pinto since she was the newest girl. (I've probably got the cars wrong, but their was a hierarchy of awful late-70s Fords).
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 11, 2022 5:47 PM |
Yeah r30. Farrah and Cheryl drove the Cobra II.

Ok, Tori, we get it
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 11, 2022 5:51 PM |
@r31, "Yeah [R30]. Farrah and Cheryl drove the Cobra II. "
Which was also a piece of junk based on the Pinto
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 11, 2022 5:52 PM |
All of the Charlie’s Angels cars ranked in order of coolness:
1. 1976 Ford Mustang 2 - Cobra II driven by Jill & Kris Munroe
2. 1976 Ford Mustang 2 driven by Kelly Garrett
a very distant 3. 1976 Ford Pinto driven by Sabrina Duncan, Tiffany Welles and Julie Rogers
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 11, 2022 6:00 PM |
Bosley drove a 1976 Ford Thunderbird which wasn’t bad then a big assed 1978 or 1979 Ford station wagon. Charlie should have forced Bosley to drive the orange Pinto and offered the Thunderbird to Sabrina.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 11, 2022 6:03 PM |
The pinto was made in orange to hide the flames.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 11, 2022 6:18 PM |
Does anyone remember when Barbara Stanwyck was a guest on Charlie's Angels as 'Toni' the female version of Charlie with three of hot male detectives? At 14, I remember jacking off while watching Stephen Shortridge as 'Cotton Harper" a former rodeo star turned operative. The other actors are a blur..

Yes I liked that episode when I got to see it in rerun syndication. I like the one Olympic dude who applied for a job at a strip club while Kris blushed. His boss was a familiar looking red headed actress who introduced them to Arnie the space stripper.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 11, 2022 6:22 PM |
I liked it when the tan, temp, pinto got demolished by a dump truck load of cinder blocks just as Tiffany Welles just escaped with her life!

They didn't deserve her.

CA did have a contract with Ford, when they were testing Sada Thompson for the part of Angel Lorraine, they used a blue Ford Econoline van, which was windowless since Angel Lorraine would have been primarily the 'getaway driver' and not so much working 'on her feet' since Sada found running in a twinset, pumps and blue jeans to be more difficult than she expected. Alas, Spelling decided against Angel Lorraine primarily because of the unexpected 'Tracy and Hepburn-like' sexual tension betweedn Angel Lorraine and David Doyle's Bosley. Instead Shellley Hack was cast

Shelley - who was snapped up by Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen - was too talented for the show and showed the others up. That’s why she was fired.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 9, 2022 7:17 PM |
I wouldn't mind having Charlie's Angels brought back to TV. I am still in awe how badly they fucked up the reboot in 2011. Ramon Rodriguez was divine to look at. But the writing was just atrocious. It was so bad that I thought the show was planned right from the start as a huge tax write-off. And the actors were clearly not cast to win any Emmy either. Such a shame. How difficult is it to do a show around three girls in a sisterhood solving crimes in Mission Impossible-style? I'm ready for it. But please do it with either good writing or good acting, preferably both.
Shelley can come back and take Charlie's calls in the agency.

Tea Leoni was discovered via a Charlie’s Angels reboot in the 80s. I don’t know if the pilot ever aired.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 9, 2022 8:42 PM |
[quote] The search for the new “Angels” was conducted in eleven cities over a three month period. The four actresses selected were Karen Kopins (Dallas) as Pam Ryan, Claire Yarlett (The Colbys) as Connie Bates, Sandra Canning (Dragnet) as Trisha Lawrence, and the newcomer found via the talent search, Tea Leoni as Bernie Coulter. Interestingly, the relatively unknown Leoni was the only Angel to reach major success.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 9, 2022 8:44 PM |
As a kid, I remember liking the proposed premise of Angels '88 — four actresses who starred in a detective show are out of work when the show gets canceled and try to do the real thing — and was bummed when it never aired.
As an adult, I think, what idiot proposed a show where four characters who are well-known TV celebrities become investigators who have to go undercover every week? And how dumb was the network to let the idea get as far as the casting stage.

by Anonymous | reply 73 | September 12, 2022 7:34 PM |
the opening shot of Tiff's reaction to the stack of papers being dumped on her desk was poorly shot and cut; the guy's arms are in the way and so it ends too early.
A sad omen that her run was mishandled
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 12, 2022 9:26 PM |
R73 They were too cheap to reshoot the establishing shots of the agency with the cars out front, so Tiffany and Julie were stuck with the pinto
by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 13, 2022 3:15 PM |
Julie Rogers was driving a new Lincoln Town Car in first two episodes of CA. Then she was hired by Townsend & Associates and immediately began driving the hand-me-down orange Ford Pinto. What a letdown!!

It's too bad in the late 1980s or in the 1990s that Aaron wasn't able to get them all back for one big reunion movie before David Doyle passed away.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 17, 2022 5:28 AM |

R77 They tried multiple times, but they could never get any of the 3 of the four that they wanted (Kate, Farrah, Jaclyn and Cheryl) but only Jaclyn and Cheryl were game. Kate and Farrah were the hold ups.
They had no interest in Shelley or Tanya.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | September 17, 2022 9:50 PM |
I'd read that R84; it's too bad; I would have gone with Jaclyn and Cheryl and Shelley and Tanya and David and John Forsythe for a reunion flick and just shown the others in flashbacks.
You'd think Farrah would be begging for work in the 1990s.
Poor Kate. So talented. That Kramer role would have changed her career. She at least would have gotten a nod.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | September 18, 2022 3:45 AM |
No one seems to entertain the notion that Jackson might have just been so-so had she done KRAMER VS. KRAMER. She didn’t exactly set the screen on fire in MAKING LOVE.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | September 18, 2022 9:03 AM |
Correct re Jackson R85 And she missed an Oscar nomination for Making Love by one vote! Making Love was no box office hit. An Officer and a Gentleman was. That made the whole difference.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | September 30, 2022 7:25 PM |
I remember the old thread where we went through all of Meryl’s roles Kate would have UNDOUBTEDLY played after “Kramer vs. Kramer,” complete with illustrations.
It was hilarious.
Maybe she could have handled “The River Wild”
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 30, 2022 7:48 PM |
R86, if Jackson could get TWO Emmy noms from doing Charlie's Angels scripts she might have done well on-screen as Joanna Kramer in Kramer v Kramer.
Hoffman met with her and wanted her for the part.
There were a LOT of strong actress performances in 1982 so she didn't get a nod for Making Love. I never heard she missed it by one vote.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | October 2, 2022 2:57 AM |
Nobody gives a shit you moron
by Anonymous | reply 91 | October 2, 2022 3:11 AM |
Exactly R90. Kate missed a nod by one vote. She lost to Debra Winger. An Officer and a Gentleman was a huge hit in 1982. Making Love wasn't because yes. A gay drama against a mainstream boy-meets-girl love story? No chance in 1982.

Pinto driving Tiffany is economical. She drinks Riunite box wine and gets DIY Toni body wave home perms. When she gets a run in her L'Eggs Sheer Energy pantyhose in "Nude" she cuts the leg off and pairs it with an opposite leg pair of L'Eggs pantyhose. Once she paired a "Nude" with a "Suntan" and had to spend the day with mismatched legs.

Caged Angel - Kris goes undercover in prison and meets Big Aggie.
Angels on the Street - Kelly and Tiffany hit the street as prostitutes.
Angels on Campus - Tiffany goes back to visit her old sorority only to find a white slavery ring at work.
Angel Hunt - Nice kitty kitty
Homes $weet Homes - Tiffany looks so fab in this one.
Nips and Tucks - Tiffany goes undercover as a plastic surgeon's nurse.
Toni's Boys - I love this one. It's full of men and Barbara Stanwyck. Plus Tricia O'Neil is fun to watch as model agency head - Anne Moore.

Always loved Hack in CA, but in KoC she is at an apex of imperious, subtle glamor, sailing into the office lobby while mispronouncing Rupert Pupkin's name, "Pipkin." Shelley Hack had the deck stacked against her from the start on CA. The scripts were due before they'd cast her, so they couldn't write to Hack's strengths because they didn't know who was being cast. By the time they got "Tiffany" figured out, and she got it figured out how to be on the show, it was too late. Sabrina was the street-smart angel. Tiffany was the effortlessly classy East Coast educated angel which should have given the show enough of a refresh to go to being a straight ahead detective show. Later in the season when they get the character right in the writing, Hack has no problem holding her own with the other two and being fun and memorable.
Combine the generic characterization in the scripts with the fourth season shifting to the solo storylines where there are episodes with two of the angels barely in them and that's another strike against her.
Plus Nolan Miller and others have said that (out of insecurity, or whatever) Hack became difficult and demanding about her wardrobe and hair. She was a very experienced model and must have known she sometimes looked awful on screen, and must have been trying to control the part of the job she knew best. Imagine knowing the hair and makeup people let you go out there not looking good.
Shelley doesn't act anymore. It turns out she is very smart IRL. She went to Smith for undergrad and has an MBA. She got on the other side of the camera and made money there and did political activism work in Bosnia. Imagine Cheryl or Tanya trying that.
She had some awful luck on TV. Worse than the CA firing was that she was one of the Night Court ladies written as a love interest for Harry Anderson that they went through before finally getting Markie Post, who actually clicked and whom they knew how to write for. It was first Paula Kelly, then Shelley for a few days, then Ellen Foley, and finally Post. After CA ABC kept trying for her as leading lady in two bomb series: Cutter to Houston with Alec Baldwin, and Jack and Mike.
She grew a sense of humor about CA: when A&E Biography did a CA week, Shelley did the wraparounds and did the classic CA bit of sitting on the desk or leaning all over the furniture instead of sitting in a vacant chair or on the couch.
And she said, "Can you imagine getting fired from Charlie's Angels for not being a good enough actress?"
She married well and she's definitely not cash strapped. Has she ever met Kate?
by Anonymous | reply 118 | June 2, 2024 6:00 PM |
R118 I don’t know if she’s met Kate Jackson or not. I know the original cast - Kate, Jaclyn, Farrah have remained close. Up until Farrah’s death. Cheryl and Jaclyn still keep in touch but I never hear Kate & Cheryl mentioned or seen together.

She may very well be a whore.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | June 2, 2024 7:24 PM |
R119 Kate and Cheryl didn't get along, Kate had allegiance to Farrah that carried over and she was unwelcoming to Cheryl, and the episode structures reflects that interpersonal conflict. In the season 2 and 3 episodes, when everyone pairs off, it's the Kris-Sabrina pairing that's the rarest. Sometimes they'll have scenes together and they'll be on a stakeout or some other setup where they don't even have to look at each other. The most typical pairings if it's something where clothes are coming off is skimpy clothing on Kelly-Kris/Sabrina-Bos doing legwork.
In the behind the scenes documentaries they'll both allude to it but are at least gracious about it, usually along the lines of "we weren't friends in real life but we got the work done." It was in the press at the time that Kate Jackson was unhappy with the show and would fight for better scripts, yet as someone mentioned upthread, she received two Emmy nominations as Sabrina.
When Jaclyn's son was married recently, Kate was there and Cheryl wasn't, even though Smith sees Ladd much more often because Jackson is so rarely in the public eye.

They needed to introduce her dad an old pal of Charlie's and reveal why he was so secretive about his i.d. Making Charlie the father of Kely makes the most sense.

R124, I'm not saying Cheryl is Frances McDormand but I can't see Kate respecting Farrah's 'acting.'
She giggled and smiled through every episode.
One rare time they acted on screen was when Kris shot John Karlen's character and Sabrina comforted Kris and took the gun from her
Kate was amazing in that episode as a bitch prospective adoptive mother; she smoked and made the bad guys look warm by comparison

My personal favorite episodes of season 4 are:
Caged Angel - Kris goes behind bars to stop a burglary ring - featuring the infamous character, Big Aggie.
Angels on the Street - A local music teacher by day and a prostitue by night; gets beaten up. Her naive father hires the Townsend Agency to find out why his daughter is beaten and acting secretive.
Angels on Campus - Two sorority sisters disappear. The angels head back to college to meet investigate possible human trafficking.
Homes Sweet Homes - After an estate robbery, the angels set a trap with priceless letters. Tiffany looked fabulous in this episode!!
Nips and Tucks - Tiffany goes undercover as a nurse for a plastic surgeon who the angels believe is being coerced into changing the appearance of a fugitive. Tab Hunter guest stars.
Toni’s Boys - after the angels escape, several fatal accidents, Charlie asked his friend Antonia Blake to have her boys watch over them. Guess starring Barbara Stanwyck and Bob Seagren.. Aaron Spelling created Toni’s Boys to be a possible CA spin-off series!!
One Love…. Two Angels - Kelly learns that she may be the long lost daughter of a millionaire when he dies of a sudden heart attack. Kelly hires the angels to find her true identity.. Guest starring Patrick Duffy and Robert Reed.

All great choices, R128
I love most of those plus the pilot with Diana Muldar and Bo Hopkins and Tommy Lee Jones; Angels in chains -- great supporting cast; and Angel in Love, I have no doubt Jackson's Emmy nominated turn.
