The best was probably Jennifer Marlow, who was one of the rare beautiful blondes on 70s TV who was actually incredibly smart rather than stupid. Carol Kester Bondurant was the second best (she always knew exactly what to do) and was my veyr favorite.

The worst were Murphy brown's temps, of which my very favorite was the Method actress who started talking and walking like Eliza Doolittle, and then out of nowhere transformed the next day into a tempestuous Southern vixen.

MURPHY: (shocked) "What happened to Eliza?"

SECRETARY: "Eliza is DEAD!! And Maggie the Cat is alive... ALIVE!!"

That may still be one of my my all-time favorite bits from a sitcom ever.

Della is the best by a country mile. Did she ever leave Perry's side? Evenings, weekends... Della seemed to have no life outside the office, nor did she appear to want one. Just assisting her boss/quasi-lover was all she asked. And the occasional steak dinner.

Jennifer on WKRP wasn't a great secretary. She made more money than anyone else in the office and didn't even take dictation or type. She answered the phone and wore clingy dresses, that's it.

The very best: Edie Adams in Billy Wilder's "The Apartment" in her pointy glasses and faux leopard coat, who puts the boot into her philandering, two-timing boss (Fred MacMurray) with one phone call to his wife after he sacks Adams.

by Anonymousreply 46November 6, 2021 1:12 PM

[quote]The best was probably Jennifer Marlow, who was one of the rare beautiful blondes on 70s TV who was actually incredibly smart rather than stupid.

Actually, it was kind of head of it's time that this beautiful woman is the smartest person in the room, is really the person that runs things even if she doesn't have the title and everyone wants to get on her good side rather than treat her like a subordinate. Loni Anderson was actually very good at telling people to fuck off with a big smile on her face.
