She was quite pretty back in the day.

She received a Fulbright Fellowship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in London.[1] She apprenticed at the Actor's Workshop of San Francisco in 1961–62.
Grassle had real theatrical chops and training, and appeared on Broadway. Chances are that Landon may have been intimidated.

God that shocks me. Ma was a central character. I liked her better than Laura and Pa as a kid. Hairy Mary was dull and odd Carrie. Ma stood up to the bullies IIRC? She should have had equal acting pay to Landon. Pa would have looked like a lonely perv with no Ma.

How obnoxious and egomaniacal Michael Landon was has been covered. I even remember an article in TV Guide when Little House was on the air about how he disrupted sets, dismissed writers/directors and made episodes all improvisation, which drove everyone crazy. I wondered how much coke he was consuming.

Agreed, R2, very pretty indeed, and with some classy Broadway credits pre-“Little House”.
Never could stand Landon, he always seemed like a phony, bullying creep. Espousing family values on “Little House” and that saccharine follow-up, “Highway to Heaven” while he traded in his wife for a much-younger woman.

It's not surprising Grassle and Landon didn't get along. She was a feminist and Landon was an old-school type of guy. But I don't think Grassle was all that tight with anyone from the cast. I remember she once said he was even uncomforable around the children at first, since she wasn't a mother. I think over time she might have been less than an outsider.
That set was very male oriented though, with lots of practical jokes going on all the time, so I wouldn't be surprised ifthere were lots of off color jokes flying around too. But all of the original child actors besides Anderson were very complementary of Landon, saying he was very good to them overall and protected them. Many of the other women on the cast like Charlotte Stewart, Hersha Parady, Lucy Lee Flippin, and Bonnie Bartlett spoke very well of Landon for the most part. Occasionally they seemed to be hesitant to comment on certain things, so I'm sure there were times when they seen or heard him doing questionable things on set.
I don't think he and Katherine McGregor got along very well either, especially at the beginning. She was very vocal about how she seen her character and what she should be portrayed, but Landon finally seen she knew what she was doing and let her do her thing.

[quote] They basically drank all day on set

by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 4, 2021 8:42 PM |
It was not on "Little House"--he made a TV movie about the fact that he used to wet the bed as a teenager and that his evil mother thought he did it on purpose, so on laundry days she would hang his soiled sheets out to dry to punish him. he would run straight home from school before the school bus got there so no one would see the soiled sheets. this led to him being such a good runner that he was the star of the track team.
So he made a movie about it. I am not making this up.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 4, 2021 8:45 PM |
[quote]'He could also be vindictive. I remember him telling me the main reason he decided to blow up the town of Walnut Grove at the end of Little House was so that no one else would ever be able to use our sets.'

[R 23] Landon was a bedwetter as a child but claimed not as an adult.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 4, 2021 8:52 PM |
I doubt Michael Landon could smell anything. He smoked four packs of unfiltered cigarettes a day for years. Story goes he also kept a pint of vodka in his pocket on set--between the vodka and the cigs the odor emanating from his breathe and pores must have been powerful.

Alison Arngrim's memoir is very good, I recommend it. She said that when the booze was getting low on the Little House set, it was an emergency. A couple crew members were immediately dispatched to the store to re-stock, not matter what time it was. They'd head out to get cases of beer and bottles of whiskey at 9:00 in the morning if need be.
Michael Landon always had a cup of whiskey at his side, which he'd nip on all day. No doubt that was why he died of pancreatic cancer.

Alison Arngrim is still doing tours in her one woman show and jokes about his ego, reminding the audience that Pa never broke a leg or hip, only his arms and ribs so he could show off his chest. I saw it in New York City a few months ago and she was awesome. If she had any bitterness she's gotten over it through her humor. She said that Richard Bull basically played himself and was always kind to her. Katherine McGregor thought that Landon strutted around like a rooster and made fun of that. McGregor could be haughty but it was always for the sake of making a better show and she was never deliberately mean. Landon probably had his hands full with her and I hope she made him quake in his boots when she approached him, but he never had her or Nels on the back burner so obviously he grew to respect her.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 4, 2021 10:44 PM |

"Landon is the son of late actor Michael Landon."
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 4, 2021 10:59 PM |
The picture posted of his (gay) screenwriter son Christopher is real.
Landon always looked incredibly healthy, but was a notorious smoker and drinker. He believed that this contributed to his pancreatic and liver cancer. He announced his cancer in April 1991. He infamously appeared on Carson’s TONIGHT SHOW on May 9, looking healthy and joking about his diagnosis, but he was already terminally ill. I remember watching his appearance live. He died less than 2 months later on July 1.
Part 1 of his final Carson appearance.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 4, 2021 11:12 PM |
His name always comes up in the possible, hidden AIDS deaths, since he died in 1991, but I’m sure it was cancer from his lifestyle of smoking and drinking. He and Carson both were vindictive assholes who treated their spouses horribly and were functional alcoholics.
Not paying Grassle more than what the children were paid is insulting. And they could have turned the “town” into a tourist-type spot or definitely reused parts of the set.

Charlotte Stewart (Miss Beadle) led a much different life than her onscreen character. From IMDB:
Penned a tell-all autobiography where she admits being a wild party girl, becoming addicted to both drugs and alcohol after Little House on the Prairie ended and becoming homeless, soon after she left the series.
Among the many men she admitted having hook-ups with were Jon Voight, Bill Murray, Victor French ("Mr. Edwards" in the series), Ralph Waite, Mike Connors, Chad Everett and Jim Morrison.

I've heard Michael Landon was hung as a horse. His son shows he inherited that characteristic from someone in the family. His great helmet head makes me wonder if Landon had one too.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 4, 2021 11:46 PM |
The reason for blowing up the town isn't true.
NBC leased the land for the Little House sets from Getty, who required the network to return an empty lot when the series was over.
The sets were always going to be struck, they just decided to include it in the show.

Karen Grassle might have been pretty liberal in some ways: one of her husbands was Leon Russom, who appeared naked in the original cast of "Oh! Calcutta!) along with Alan Rachins and Billy (Maude) Macy. There were full-frontals of the cast in the book and souvenir program for sale at the time -- I guess it must have been in their contracts when they signed to do the show. Leon went on to do lots of soaps and appeared in at least one of the "Star Trek" series. He was quite hot when young - and hung!
by Anonymous | reply 92 | November 5, 2021 2:06 AM |
Bill Macy, that is of "Maude" - yes, who was also naked; Alan Rachins was gorgeous when he wore his wig; even back then, with it, he looked like a hairy Louis Jourdan.

My sister and I went to hear Karen talk at a local historical society event a few years ago. We both loved the show as kids. We were latchkey kids, and Ma was a calm presence when we watched after school.
There was a huge turnout, and afterward she signed autographs patiently for at least 2 hours in the heat. She had a brace on her writing arm, but signed away and stood repeatedly for photos. Very lovely woman, clearly intelligent and professional. We were trying to get a photo quickly so as to not keep her too long, and she said "Oh, let's stand over to the side so the children have room and you'll get a better photo." She then directed my nieces and nephew on how to pose and complimented them. I thought my sister was going to cry.
They needed to close the line, but she made sure anyone who already had been waiting would get in to see her. There really was a huge response-you could tell even after all these years people felt a connection.
Her talk was interesting, although I felt for her because the audience questions were full of Landon inquiries. She was polite and did her best to paint him in a flattering light while acknowledging that he could be challenging. Reading this makes it all the more clear how difficult it must be to placate his fans who want to see him as a true living saint.
Karen said they've all stayed in touch, and talked about Katherine MacGregor extensively. She said Katherine couldn't be further from her character, and that while she was sadly living in a care facility, she still answered fan mail whenever possible.
I'm looking forward to the book.

Sorry to go on and on at R94. It was a wonderful experience.
We brought our mother, who has no use for sentimental television but wanted to see the exhibits. My mother was not fond of Michael Landon, and after about the 10th question about him, she muttered "for Pete's sake, can't you tell he was a monster to work with, and let this woman have some peace!"
R95 If she wasn't in assisted living, she had slowed down to the point where she couldn't do reunions and such. I could be recalling incorrectly. I remember Karen's tone was sad about Katherine's current situation, but that she had high praises for her as a person and actress.

[quote] Wonder if Grassle will write on what exactly happened when her character was written out the last two seasons or so. Fired or quit?
Landon was the one who wanted to step away from the show so they revamped it as Little House: A New Beginning and focused more on Laura and Almanzo. They wrote that Charles had sold the farm and was moving the family to the city. A really lazy plot point considering how frequently they had Landon’s character talk about hating the city and country farm life was so much better. Grassle did return for the finale where they blew up the town.
[quote]Also, does anyone know why Melissa Sue didn’t appear in the finale? I thought it was crazy Mary wasn’t there.
The Mary character had left the show a couple seasons before they blew up the town. Melissa Sue Anderson had been over the show for some time by the time she left. Even the last season where she was in the opening credits she only appeared in maybe half that season’s episodes. It was written that she and husband Adam were moving to New York where he would work in his father’s law practice. MSA apparently had something of a falling out with Landon over the writing of a later season episode and spoke publicly about how she thought he was pandering to the audience. (Really? She just now noticed?) She only appeared on the show once after that and was relegated to the closing credits with the extras and day players.

That show ran forever and has been in reruns probably around the globe for decades. Even with the shitty child-actor pay scale, what would someone like Karen be pulling in from residuals? Any ideas?
by Anonymous | reply 115 | November 5, 2021 7:07 AM |
Absolutely nothing, R115. Nada.
In those days, standard actors' contracts called for residuals for six airings. Just six. After that, they received not one penny.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | November 5, 2021 7:58 AM |
Without Little House, Karen would have been Jan Maxwell without the singing voice and the rent stabilized apartment.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | November 5, 2021 11:21 AM |
Incorrect, r116. The LHOTP cast did get residuals. I wrote in another thread about taking a private Hollywood tour with Alison Arngrim and she said they did receive residuals, but they aren't huge and they diminished over time.
She said the cast of "The Waltons," which started a year or two earlier, did not get them.

Alison Arngrim wrote in her book that the cast does get residuals, but it's basically enough to pay the phone bill and that's it. They don't get a huge amount of money.
Today, actors on a show that ran as long as Little House did would be set for life.

In the book, which details how cold Melissa Sue Anderson was to the other girls, Alison mentions seeing Melissa Sue at Michael Landon's funeral, long after the show went off the air and the girls were adults. Melissa Sue was carrying her new baby, and Alison thought it was the chance to let bygones be bygones.
"Your baby is adorable!" she said. "How old is she?"
"Six months," Melissa Sue said flatly, and turned on her heel.

[quote] Alison Arngrim wrote in her book that the cast does get residuals, but it's basically enough to pay the phone bill and that's it. They don't get a huge amount of money.
I remember Kevin Hagan, the actor who played Doc Baker, did some tabloid interviews in the 90s or maybe early 2000s talking about how Landon had screwed him and other actors by keeping them as guest stars rather than series regulars. I don’t know how SAG rules work and I couldn’t find any articles but as I recall Hagan was having health issues and was struggling because (he claimed) his benefits weren’t what they would have been had he gotten better billing.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | November 6, 2021 1:52 PM |
To be fair, Doc Baker appeared in maybe every fourth or fifth episode.

I remember that too, R81. I never watched Little House or Highway to Heaven or anything else Landon was in and knew nothing about him so I didn’t think anything of the outpouring of grief when he died. It didn’t take long for the truth to come out.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | November 6, 2021 3:26 PM |
Landon was no saint, and I find myself in Ma’s side after reading Grassle’s experience. But do have to give credit that by all accounts it was a safe space for the kid actors, especially considering all of the booze and coke that seemed to have been superfluous on the set.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | November 6, 2021 3:37 PM |
Even if Hagen was only in half the series episodes he still did a lot more work than the Carrie actresses who got regular billing and must have made more than him. That had to sting. But it doesn’t seem fair to blame Landon. Wouldn’t that be a network decision? Maybe he felt Landon could have fought for the actors more? Wish I could find the actual interview. I think it was on Entertainment Tonight.

R156 I honestly don’t remember one Carrie story, or her even being featured heavily in an episode. I guess Landon felt it would be better to feature the entire family in the opening credits vs. many of the townsfolk who just got graphic credits.

Landon’s stepdaughter wrote a memoir published after his death and she had shared wonderful memories of her childhood. Her mother was devastated after their divorce, a surprise to everyone, but she remained close to him until the end. Both Landon wives looked like blonde hooker showgirls.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | November 6, 2021 9:40 PM |
Michael Landon was the showrunner, r148 / r153. Watch the credits of a random episode, he was star, writer or many episodes, director of many episodes. It was his baby. He apparently had words with the producer, Ed Friendly, early on in the run and took over everything.
There was another Carrie focused episode...where she fell into the abandoned well.
Keeping Carrie in the cast was something nice Landon did. They were horrible actresses and today would have been quickly replaced. They even brought in Missy Francis in the later years and gave her what could have been Carrie's screen time.
