Wife-beater. Don't mean an undershirt.

It was a huge hit, but it's no "Wild Bunch".

Ali MacGraw left her husband for Steve when they shot this movie.

Insecure tough guy. Lifelong loyalty to the Junior Republic facility where he straightened-out a bit. Ambitious hipster who turned to religion late in life. Was great in "the Great Escape", "Love with the Proper Stranger" and "Bullitt", as well as "The Getaway" which is basically a glossy B picture---a Western/noir from a Jim Thompson story. MacGraw is the weak link, but thankfully Slim Pickens and others steal the show. McQueen wanted to do truly serious work near the end of life and did a leaden version of "An Enemy of the People".

He was masterful in The Blob.

He was a REAL LIFE HERO !!! Saved a couple people when he was in the navy. He is the guy that writers try to make up in their minds when they need a hero. This guy really was.

Blake Edwards was mocking this business when he made S.O.B.

My mom loves telling a story about Steve. She was teaching in a small town in some hick town in Missisippi while he was filming a movie. This was in the late 60's, so racial tensions were high. She never spoke to him but would see him filming occasionally. Anyway they were done taping and were planning to have a huge closing party in a big shot restaurant in the area. Everything was set up for the party for the following day but the owners at the last moment told McQueen that blacks would not be allowed. Steve said nothing, appearing to comply. The next night, everything was prepped and set up to welcome the guests. Not one person showed up. The whole crew stood them up and went somewhere else, completely leaving them hanging with the food, the decorations, etc..
Long story short, say what you will about the guy, he was not racist.

I thought he was a fag.

Wasn't he a style icon?

Somewhat. He was a short guy with a chip on his shoulder who briefly epitomized cool---wearing a leatherjacket.
