Babs as a high class whore. Suspend every shred of your disbelief OP.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 30, 2021 3:31 PM |
It was just okay. Barbra’s voice sounded lovely, although it’s a bit jarring to hear her sing lyrics like “Yes it’s true, I am a whore, on the mattress, on the floor.”
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 30, 2021 3:34 PM |
I saw this at a theater years ago. It was like watching a made for TV movie. Babs trying drama and the whole things not terribly impressive.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 30, 2021 3:34 PM |
Barbra cast as someone who rich men paid to have sex with?
Oh! My! Sides!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 30, 2021 3:37 PM |
Would you like that, baby?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 30, 2021 3:38 PM |
It was a very obvious attempt by Streisand to get an Oscar nomination, but the Academy wasn’t buying.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 30, 2021 3:40 PM |
“I’m not nuts.” —Barbra
No, but we were for paying to see this claptrap.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 30, 2021 3:41 PM |
From Janet Maslin's NY TIMES review:
"Miss Streisand, who produced NUTS, didn't direct it. And Martin Ritt, who is the director of record, didn't either. The film is almost entirely adrift."
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 30, 2021 3:42 PM |
It's laughably bad. Babs tries to play mentally unstable while at the same time trying to convince us she's also a high end escort. I'm sure she thought she was gonna get an Oscar nomination for this one.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 30, 2021 3:44 PM |
Barbra was one of the most talented singers ever. She also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout her life. Despite that, she had a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 30, 2021 3:44 PM |
Isn't there a scene with Leslie Nielsen in black bikini briefs?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 30, 2021 3:50 PM |
You will never forget Leslie Nielsen's sagging tits. You have been warned.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 30, 2021 3:50 PM |
I have only seen bits of it on TV in my childhood, but I will never forget a comment DLer overheard in his cinema:
“Oh my god, she even fucks to world music.”
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 30, 2021 3:53 PM |
Leslie Nielsen has turned up to his dinner with Barbra!
Do many out of town Johns want to hook up with a Jewish MILF, and not a hot 25 year old? She is a very specific type.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 30, 2021 4:18 PM |
I don’t know how relevant the main character’s age is, and Barbra actually looks good, but if a high class hooker in her mid-40s was required, why not cast Cher? She was regularly pulling 20-something tail, ie Val Kilmer in his prime, at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 30, 2021 4:22 PM |
Barbra is one hot sexy piece of tail, and totes fuckworthy in NUTS.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 30, 2021 4:34 PM |
He’s in his bikini briefs! And saggy titties or not he looks great for 61.
And yes, there’s a sitar playing.
And now he’s dead.

[quote]I can't recall - was there a "Love Theme from Nuts" that played over the end credits, written by the Bergmans and sung by the star herself?
If not, it should have been Barbra's rendition of "I've Never Been To Me."

She's not nuts, she's obnoxious. Friend and I walked out of the theater after 30 minutes. Awful, miscast movie.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 30, 2021 4:58 PM |
They should have re-set the location of the movie to a truck stop. Then it would have made sense. Truck drivers would tap that in a second.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 30, 2021 5:12 PM |
OK, Maureen Stapleton is on the stand and clearly Babs was molested by step daddy Karl Malden.
Is this woman thick or not? How was it not blindingly obvious?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 30, 2021 5:16 PM |
And I'm just 16-17 years older than Babs, but sure, whatevs.
I already played Dick Van Dyke's mother in BYE BYE BIRDIE, and he's 6 months younger than I am.

Then "Owl and the Pussycat," "Up the Sandbox," "What's Up, Doc?", "The Main Event," "All Night Long," and "The Mirror Has Two Faces." If you don't want to shoot yourself, you're a stronger man than I am.

The director Martin Ritt made some good movies, but he was the tail end of his career and couldn't pull "Nuts" together.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 30, 2021 6:47 PM |
r57, Ritt was totally out of his wheelhouse with Nuts. Who thought a filmmaker whose greatest achievements were rural melodramas like The Long Hot Summer, Hud, and Norma Rae was right for an NYC-set courtroom drama?

Later in her career Barbra was "very emotionally devastated" that she wasn't offered the role of Nomi in "Showgirls".

Oscar, Emmys, Tony, Grammys, Golden Globes, ,Medal of Honor (France), and virtually every lifetime achievement and national award available… record breaking tours, success in every area of show business, humanitarian awards, honorable doctorates… funded a women’s heart disease center at Ceder Sinai, just funded a progressive think tank at UCLA, champion and patron of gay rights for decades, most consistent and long term fund raiser in Hollywood for the Democratic part. This thread and the Funny Girl thread seems inhabited by some very angry and unhappy trolls. MAGA loonies, a few anti Semites and some very very stupid or just plane unhappy people. No one has to like anyone or pay to see their work. I really do believe the combination of Jewish, woman, great talent and success, progressive advocacy and philanthropyis a toxic brew for some.

Still, point taken on some of the criticism.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | October 30, 2021 10:36 PM |
Not one of her better ones. She overacts in the courtroom scenes. (Picture Bonnie Franklin playing the role, and you get an idea of how over the top she is.)
Had the premise just stayed to her being an average call girl it could have been reasonable. But as usual her vanity and ego got in the way. She had the be the highest priced call girl in the city. And that pointless scene where Richard Dreyfus stumbles upon her high gloss, professional cheesecake photos of her ass and legs was laughably out of place.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | October 30, 2021 10:48 PM |
I just think she's hammy and won't let anyone else share the screen. I do like the furniture in her movies. In one of them, the cute starter apartment had Stickley furniture painted white. Who but you Babs?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | October 31, 2021 2:54 AM |
Babs gave it the old college try but by the time she made this movie she was about 44 years old and not quite believable as a youngish, high priced hooker. It was a vanity piece for her in more ways than one.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | October 31, 2021 4:22 AM |
I wish I knew editing because the scene where Leslie attacks her and she throws everything at him, including baby powder, needs to be reset to that music from Benny Hill.

I vaguely remember commercials for the Broadway production as a kid.
It was the star saying "I love you to the moon and back" and other quotes.
I always thought it was odd that such a flop on stage made it to the movies with a major star.
Debra Winger was supposed to do it first at a lower budget.

I once sat with Shirley MacLaine on a plane. I lulled her into talking to me by asking metaphysical questions. (She was actually pretty interesting and seemed to trust me that I was open to what she was saying and not going to think she was crazy.)
Anyway somehow Streisand came up. I said something like was that a shock to you when Streisand didn't get a Best Director nomination for The Prince of Tides when the film got so many. She guffawed and said the way Streisand treated directors? Nah. That branch would never vote for her. (and she seems to be friends with Streisand.)

I made it through twenty minutes before I turned it off. The judge and her parents kept referring to her as "young lady" and "a girl." Babs was about forty-five when this movie was released.
I've never made it through one of her movies without smirking through at least one scene of Barbra's obsessive need to be considered beautiful (or young, in this case). It's pathological.

A long time ago, I made it a point to avoid all Streisand films after "Yentl". Beforehand, I actually bought "The Prince Of Tides" blindly, because I was sure I'd love it. It turned out to be the worst Streisand film (w/"The Owl & the Pussycat" being second), AND one of the overall worst films I've ever seen. And I say that as a Barbra fan. So...I've never seen "Nuts". I can't bring myself to do it. And I even like Richard Dreyfuss.
My most watched are "On A Clear Day", "For Pete's Sake", "What's Up, Doc?", and "The Way We Were".
by Anonymous | reply 96 | October 31, 2021 11:31 AM |
THE OWL & THE PUSSYCAT is a curiosity: an overly talky filmed play, and very much stuck in its era.
But Streisand and Segal are terrific together: funny, very sexy, and sweet. It's one of my top George Segal performances, and I'm a fan. It's a shame they never worked together again (except for his teeny role in MIRROR HAS TWO FACES, which barely counts). But I think Babs preferred more silent, WASP-y hunks like Redford and Jeff Bridges. (Or James Brolin, in real life).
by Anonymous | reply 97 | October 31, 2021 3:32 PM |

It's a shame Barbara spent so much of her film career trying to convince people she was pretty. The Mirror Has Two Faces is the funniest--you spend the whole movie thinking it's a "Beauty lies within" tale, but then since Barbara is directing, she has to force that sexy makeover scene on us. Suddenly, everything is resolved, because her students want to fuck her! Yay!

I think Rosalyn sang at Barbra's Hollywood Bowl concert a few years ago.
(I don't remember really. Jason sang. As did a bunch of other people. Barbra would sing like three songs then take a break. I was crabby and self-conscious because the rest of my party who bought the box seats got stuck in traffic and I sat there alone in a box for four for most of the show.)

" I sat there alone in a box for four for most of the show"
I can not stop crying. This is so sad.

No need for sadness Darfur Orphan.
It was more shocking than sad. The critic (for a major outlet) didn't want to go. So they sent me, a copy clerk, to take copious notes of the performance so he could write a review based on them!
So odd that my judgements (of a singer I knew little about) were published as opinion for a major outlet.
Sitting there by myself only made it more absurd. I mean I had to judge what was a "hit" song by quickly googling or gaging the crowds response.
