by Anonymousreply 12October 29, 2021 5:38 AM

I think we can assume anyone on this site graduated with an 18 as the first two digits..

by Anonymousreply 13October 29, 2021 5:42 AM

'85 . Missing a reunion this weekend.. Don't want to fly that far only to return for the holidays. High school in the 80s suited me just fine. I had a blast. Parents had no idea where I was ever once I turned 15. I was either home or out. It was never where are you going but when are you coming back. Fake idea a 15 to see bands. I grew up fast but as a little gayling that's not unusual. I would love to go back for just one night.

1983. When younger folks ask me what year I graduated I give them the "Micheal Jackson had a really big album that year" clue. A number have come back with "Oh same year as Bad?" (WTF?)

1982

I’ve always wished I was older for two main reasons.

I’ve always preferred 1970s music, TV, fashion, and hairstyles to that of the 1980s.

If I were older I would be retired by now.

I have forgotten the date but I once figured up the exact day I wish I had been born.

Had I been born on that date I would have turned 18 the day after the Vietnam draft ended.

The remainder of the 70s would have been my playground and although I did engage in quite a bit of consequence free sex while I was in junior high it would’ve been nice to really kick up my heels and been a big whore in the pre-AIDS era.

1972 and I hated every single fucking moment of it.

R64/R75 I graduated in 2011, and started lurking and posting here later that same year due to being bored and miserable in an entry-level pre-College job at the world’s most boring and poisonous company. All through school I was always a loner and misfit geek posting on various message boards in my free time, and I hated school and my peer group, so for me it’s situation-normal.

Growing up I wasn’t permitted and did not have the resources to go out socialising afterschool or on weekends, and besides that I didn’t have the confidence or the mental/physical strength to do so anyway.

Not everyone had idyllic young lives where they were popular at school, of sound health, and enjoyed normal freedoms and a non-toxic home-life, yanno. Feel lucky if you did, and be considerate of those who didn’t.

I would encourage everyone particularly from the 60's & 70's to attend those high school reunions. It's nice to see how everyone looks and what happened to everyone.

Try to get involved if you live in the area - it's much more fun. High school annuals are available to look at on Classmates.com without paying - although you have to join. It costs nothing. It's fun to see the photos.

One of the women involved in my 50th reunion in 2018 messaged me and I volunteered to do a couple of videos for the event......an In Memorium which was very sad.....and a history of the class with all of the photos I could find at Classmates from grade school onward...... It was a great success and I talked to a lot of folks and realized that things that bothered me from back then were really NOT important.

My life is better for it.

by Anonymousreply 101October 29, 2021 10:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 156October 30, 2021 5:24 PM

R155, in most cases, one can use the year one graduated to extrapolate the birth year with a fair degree of accuracy.

Have you ever gotten any calls from Indian scammers (the 'Microsoft' or 'Apple' scam, the $799 Amazon charge scam, the 'IRS warrant for your arrest' scam, the Medicare scam)? The telephone numbers they call are part of a database which can be edited to include tiny details one inadvertently drops to the callers during the interactions. Depending upon the success of their ruses and the number of interactions they have with one (conservatively, say, two or three calls a week across six or seven years), the notes attached to each number can potentially grow to encompass a fairly intrusive picture of the person(s) they're calling. There's other sources of online data they can mine also - businesses you frequent which sell your information. The accumulated data constitutes a profile, offering the potential to scam you, to steal your identity - any number of ways to exploit you.

It's the same here on the DL. Threads which ask DL users to provide some seemingly innocuous piece of personal information here and there are collated by members of the teams assigned to troll this site, building profiles of the users cumulatively. Honeypot links capture the IP addresses of those who click on them. Etcetera.

[quote] It’s so weird how early 80s and late 80s are a completely different world.

Try every year in one decade.

by Anonymousreply 164October 31, 2021 11:27 AM

^ Exactly! Compare the world of 1960 with the world of 1970 and you'll think 50 years had past. Now compare 2000 with 2010 and meh

by Anonymousreply 165October 31, 2021 3:15 PM

The 60s throughout were exciting.

1970. Shortly after graduation I discovered I could sneak into the gay bars in downtown Chicago and find older guys to buy me drinks. And just like that .....

R167 Did they ask for compensation?

by Anonymousreply 169November 1, 2021 1:48 PM

R169, back in those days the bars didn't have people at the door carding. It was up to the bartender to make sure you were "legal". I would lurk around in the back, then go up to some guy with a dollar in hand and ask if he would order me a drink. I was young but I wasn't stupid - I only went up to guys I thought were hot. Picking up guys was a lot easier back then. LOL

Wasn’t the drinking age 18 nationwide back in 1970? Or were you still 17, r170?

by Anonymousreply 173November 1, 2021 4:42 PM

Drinking age varied by state until the 1980s. The federal government made 21 the drinking age nationwide when they required it of the states to receive federal highway funding. Before that it was between 18 and 21 in most states, and varied widely.
