Actress and activist says their relationship is now 'cordial,' and that she regularly checks in with her former costar about her ongoing battle with cancer.
Alyssa Milano reveals she feels 'guilt' over Charmed tension with Shannen Doherty

Very sad, looking back. They could have been friends and enjoyed their working relationship more, but they felt they were in competition, though both already had the job. They had everything--youth, success, beauty, fame--and couldn't enjoy it. I'm sure they would both love to go back in time and be friends and just enjoy.

Love them both!
I have all seasons of Charmed on dvd, given that it was my favorite tv show in my teens and Shannen Doherty was my favorite actress of all.
Anyway, always great to hear some Charmed gossip, I ALWAYS supposed they stopped getting along because Doherty was republican and Alyssa is super Democrat, meaning one voted for Bush and the other one for Al Gore.
Weird to imagine they almost replaced Shannen with Jennifer Love Hewitt instead of Loony Mcgowan.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 28, 2021 7:57 PM |
Tiffani thiessen could have been a good replacement for shannen again, but she said she didn’t want to make her career based on replacing shannen.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 28, 2021 8:01 PM |
It had nothing to do with Politics. Most of us have been able to work with Republicans or Dems with no issues, and some of us are friends. We used to agree to disagree.
Now everything is so extreme.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 28, 2021 8:01 PM |
I wonder if it was to do with Julian McMahon.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 28, 2021 8:12 PM |
[quote]It had nothing to do with Politics.
It was because Shannen felt it was her show and Alyssa couldn't stand the control Shannen had over the series. Phoebe's character increased in popularity which Alyssa decided to throw around. That's why she takes fault for a lot of the tension between the two of them. Shannen was very serious. Alyssa wasn't.
Shannen was probably the only reason the first three seasons of the show were less camp and more consistent than the later ones. (I still watched anyway.) Shannen had a lot of input on the writing of the series. She didn't like the direction they were trying to head it in. (This ties into writer Constance Burge's exit who wanted the show to be darker while Brad Kern wanted things to go camp.)
Brad Kern also pitted the two women against each other. Julian McMahon tied into that too because of the dating Phoebe on show vs dating Shannen in real life.
Eventually the two stopped talking, which Alyssa has talked about in the press. Prior to that they were great friends and Shannen was even one of her bridesmaids. Holly said that the network even tried to hire a mediator for the two women.
Shannen pulled a "her or me" with the producers but Phoebe was pretty popular and Brad Kern really liked her. We know how that turned out.
Shannen would later ban the use of her image or likeness on the series after she left. (It was a pretty landmark event which changed the way shows handle that. Now, they have to ask permission (and pay) to do that if it's not negotiated in advance. Then, they didn't.)
It must have burned Alyssa to find out, over the years, that fans wouldn't let go of Shannen's part in the series. Years later she's arguably more associated with Charmed than 90210.
Holly, also, did a great job at not taking sides. She managed to stay friends with both women (although Shannen on and off) over the years.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 28, 2021 8:38 PM |
Well R18 some people were already very serious and crazy about politics long before Trump happened. One could've felt disgusted at each other's choice of vote, something definitely happened because they were friends in the first year of the show, things went downhill around the time the 2000 elections were about to happen.
Whatever it was, it wasn't Julian McMahon, because he started dating Shannen once the episodes of season four were airing already, and by that point Shannen had left the show and Rose McGowan was already in.

I liked Piper's sarcasm/snarkiness. But she was a bit much in the later seasons.

Rose was a good choice. I can't picture Tiffani or Jennifer as Paige.

Me neither R23 as crazy as Rose Mcgowan is,she played the character right, as if she was born for that role.
Plus, in the 2000s she still pretended to be sane.

This was originally reported by Eonline back in 2001:
[quote] Among the juiciest morsels: Alyssa is so fed up with Shannen's 'tude she has threatened to leave unless something changes. The producers are doing some serious ass-kissing, trying everything in their power to get their Charmed girl to stay.
[quote] See, the show's founding premise, "The Power of Three," demands that the three sisters work together to fight evil, which has painted the writers into an ugly corner. None of the girls can leave without the show crumbling.
[quote] Although Shannen and Alyssa have repeatedly requested as few scenes together as possible, the producers have no choice but to make the archenemies share the screen. And when they must, my sources say they show up, run through their lines and storm off.
[quote] Why such ugliness? Well, from what I hear, it all began with the show's very first publicity shots, where Shannen insisted on being placed in the center, or above the others, at all times. (One source close to the WB even hinted it was written into her contract.) It seems that while Alyssa and Holly Marie Combs were told it was an ensemble show, Shannen has claimed it as her own since day one.
[quote] Then there's the issue of wardrobe. Although all three girls wear fab threads, it's Shannen who gets the biggest chunk of the wardrobe budget, accepting nothing less than Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and the like. The wardrobe folks spend most of their time finding and reworking duds for the queen bee.
[quote] As for her royal 'tude, let's just say that during a recent taping of the "Wrestling with Demons" episode, one of the pro wrestlers ended up calling the witchy woman a bitch, which later--behind closed doors--garnered wild applause from the tongue-tied crew

I'm sure the character was tailored to fit the actress. Had it been Tiffani or JLH, Paige would likely have been written slightly differently.

"Although Shannen and Alyssa have repeatedly requested as few scenes together as possible"
VERY unprofessional! I wonder why actors in the USA get so much freedom as to suggest the writers what they should write, in many other countries around the world both would've been fired.
They did in fact have few scenes together after the 13th episode of the 3rd season, It would've been hell to write an entire 4th like that, I'm glad Rose kept her dislike of Alyssa locked in her head and never caused an argument, it may not have been the best option for her feelings, but it was the best option for the show and the fans of the show.
In Shannen's last episode Alyssa and her were together for one minute only and barely looked at each other.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 29, 2021 3:00 PM |
I found “charmed” so repetitive anyway. And this silly power of three will set you free crap that they chanted in every episode… seemed so stupid. I remember shannen dissing the show and comparing it unfavourably to something more serious like “law & order” it’s a shame she’s never really had much of a chance to be in something with a bit more substance than an Aaron spelling production.

I loved Tina Fey's joke on SNL when Shannen was developing a sitcom:
[quote] In an effort to improve her image, Shannen Doherty has signed on to produce and act in a new sitcom about a young woman with a reputation for being difficult and mean, but who is really kind at heart. Doherty will play that woman's bitchy friend.

I somehow missed that episode when it originally aired but managed to catch it during a rerun. They should have got The Rock to guest star.
[Quote] I'm sure the character was tailored to fit the actress. Had it been Tiffani or JLH, Paige would likely have been written slightly differently.
Hmm so if it was Tiffani she'd probably be bitchy. If it was JLH she'd probably be similar to the character she played on Ghost Whisperer.

But they only chanted that some four or five times during the whole show.

It was Shannen’s show - she owned a piece of it. If Alyssa resented that she took first dibs on things - well she should have known what she was getting into.
She must have really been able to rally a lot of people to her side in order to get Shannen fired. She still makes money from the show, though.

Alyssa wasn’t even the original phoebe, she was a last minute replacement for the actress Lori Rom.

[quote]Alyssa sucks.
A girl in my class met Alyssa Milano on an elevator when I was in the 6th or 7th grade, I don’t remember where but it was someplace tropical during our Easter break. Alyssa was with Tina Yothers, Tina was nice and chatty with the girl and her family but Alyssa kept flipping her hair in a snobby way and wouldn’t talk to them or look at them.
For some reason I've never forgotten that.

When somebody you spent decades hating gets cancer and is facing death and you "reach out" to them, it's really all about you, not the hated person with cancer.
You're just trying to assuage your own guilt for being a cunt to her, and clean your conscience before they croak. That's it.
Of course you're talking about it publicly for the PR points. Plus, when she dies, you get to be the "grieving friend", instead of the raging bitch who made her life hell.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 7, 2021 11:22 PM |
I agree with R20 100% on what happened behind the scenes. The first three years were great, and Shannen really embodied the "Big Sister" role on that show
But Shannen had the last laugh. After getting screwed over royalties on merchandising during her 90210 years, Shannen wasn't about to let that happen again.
For her to return to series TV she negotiated to own a piece of the "Charmed" empire - both gross and net - including all DVD sales, overseas airings, and any and all merchandising.
She didn't have to worry about money, after leaving the show She continued to get royalty payments on anything to do with "Charmed"

When Alyssa Milano and Brian Krause left their spouses to get together, that is when things started to go downhill
That was none of Shannen business, but perhaps Alyssa & Brian personal problems spilled onto the set, which Shannen would take issue with

Holly big mouth gave hints in 2001 that Alyssa was lazy and Shannen was hard-working and ultimately that caused the conflict between them R52, as Shannen decided to take Alyssa's laziness personally.

[quote]Holly comes across as very cold and unapproachable. She’s very wooden .
Her character during the Shannen years was the heart of the show. Then she turned into a stark raving cranky bitch.
Usually a long running show will start catering to an actor's real personality to fit the character and make it more comfortable.
I wonder if this was such a case.
I mean Phoebe became a slutty nymphomaniac and we all know that was Milano in real life.

I always had some residual good feeling for Holly due to Picket Fences when the show first aired. I will occasionally catch an episode now, and her character really became a bit of a shrew. She can actually be a decent actress when she is not phoning it in and was a lot better earlier on in the show.
