The irony is that Ackles, who was on Supernatural for 15 years and directed several episodes, probably understood the role of an armorer and the responsibilities of an actor with a gun better than anyone else on this benighted set. Supernatural must've had a really good firearms team, who frequently worked with antique weapons, and if Ackles had any personal interest in not dying he would surely have learned what he could from them.

Mind you, the average theatre cat probably knows more about firearms than the team who were working on Rust at the time of the shooting.

The SPN crew was highly professional and very cautious.

So going to work on the Rust movie, and seeing the unprofessionalism and carelessness, must have scared the shit out of him.
