I just found this article from AP back in 1988, the year Heather passed . Several medical specialists and even her manager were puzzled by cause of death. It was not congenital, present from birth , that’s for sure.
The article claims there was no prior indication of intestinal troubles, but other sources indicate O’Rourke was being treated for Crohn’s Disease before her death. Because she was believed to have Crohn’s, she wasn’t tested for other issues. Her facial features were puffier than usual in Poltergeist 3, due to the steroids she was receiving.

R1, the cause of death was listed as congenital. I am aware she was treated a year before her death , when she failed the MGM physical.

I don’t believe Heather’s inflammatory bowel issues were from molestation . I do believe that Heather was very sick and according to her mom she didn’t complain, but she physically looked ill and I believe her mother should’ve taken proactive action.

Poor kid. She must have really suffered. She probably felt obligated to work, being the family breadwinner from the age of 5 or so.

R8, she was making pretty decent money and they lived in an apartment in Santee , which is a ghetto suburb of San Diego. I was also perplexed at how he’ll Heather was for a long time for growing up in one of the sunniest parts of southern California.

I have heard the pedophile molestations story more than once. It sounds plausible given what we know now.

According to "Enty" (Entertainment Lawyer) she was murdered. By Spielberg no less. He even says her remains were stolen from her crypt in Westwood Village Memorial Park in the dead of night. Ever been there? Surrounded by bustling traffic and high-rise condo towers.

That Spielberg story is an insult to the intelligence and Heather’s memory. She loved working for Spielberg and adored Henry Winkler .

Heather was very bright, a voracious reader . She was down to earth and quite well liked in her public school. She wanted to be a director And I believe she would’ve been a great one. She was misdiagnosed and her parents failed to get help in time. She didn’t have to die.

Per her Wikipedia entry:
[quote]Daniel Hollander, the head of gastroenterology at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center stated that O'Rourke's death was "distinctly unusual" as she lacked prior symptoms of the bowel defect: "I would have expected a lot of [digestive] difficulties throughout her life and not just to have developed a problem all of a sudden."[25] However, Dr. Hollander further stated that it was possible for congenital bowel narrowing to cause sudden death without symptoms if an infection caused the bowel to rupture.[25]
Her cause of death does indeed seem unusual, but not impossible. I remember reading that she was very self-conscious while shooting Poltergeist III because of her facial swelling stemming from the steroids she was taking for Crohn's disease, which is quite sad. She looked noticeably different in that movie. Her face looked far too big for the rest of her body.

I laugh my ass off every time at this scene from Poltergeist II: The family is at a late-night diner, contemplating where to go so they don't have to return to their haunted house. Carol Anne naively offers the idea that they move to Disneyland, and her brother makes fun of her. She responds, "Okay, what about Dunkin' Donuts?" It's such a trivial moment, but her delivery of the line is equally adorable and hilarious. Great comedic timing.
