Michael Caine’s soon to be dead friend
in his new interview in the guardian he says the following:
And I have another very close friend who is very, very ill. If he survives until next weekend I’ll be surprised. And I won’t mention his name, but you’ll read about him in the papers.
Who could he be talking about? I’m guessing another actor but I suppose it could be a society figure.

I was thinking perhaps Jack Nicholson. No idea if they’re close friends but they worked together.

I've had a hunch Jack Nicholson will be the "big" death of 2021 for a couple of months. He hasn't been seen in years.

My first thought was Nicholson.

Damn if it’s Nicholson. It just feels weird when iconic, larger than life actors on that level dies.

Caine is getting up there at 88. I know it’s apart of life but damn.

Nah, it's going to be a Brit.

What old Brit actors are there still alive that he didn't mention in the article? Not Hopkins because he's signed onto some new projects.

I thought it might be Terence Stamp (they were roommates in the 60s), but Stamp says they haven't talked in 40 years.

Didn’t he work together with Anthony Hopkins?

Possibly Johnny Gold. He died on October 7. Perhaps Sir Michael was interviewed for the article earlier in the month.

I'm always curious by that reaction. I could barely offer up a "Huh, you don't say" over dead celebrities, and the greater their fame the less the reaction. Someone like Linda Manz who portrayed the young girl with the odd voice in "Days of Heaven" in 1978 made more of an impression for me more because I thought of how she was such an important aspect of how people recall that film, and that that was her one great role. Jack Nicholson, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger..."Huh, you don't say."

R32 is right, I can't believe it took 32 comments for someone to say it. Here is the full quote:
What he misses, if anything, are the people, not the films. The films are there on his iPad any time he wants to watch them. But his mates have absconded; they’ve made their getaways, too. “My generation is going. All my friends are dying off. Because we all got so old. Roger Moore, Sean Connery – those are two of my closest friends who went. Then a couple of days ago, Johnny Gold, who owned Tramp, the discotheque in London. And I have another very close friend who is very, very ill. If he survives until next weekend I’ll be surprised. And I won’t mention his name, but you’ll read about him in the papers.”

John Cleese is fine, as far as I know, R39. Billy Connolly's on his last legs but I don't know if he's a particular friend of Caine's.

Wow, R42. I just found this quote in a 2010 Telegraph interview:
When I ask if he finds it hard to forge friendships with what Liz Hurley calls ‘civilians’, there is a pause before he answers. ‘My closest friends are Roger Moore, who is an actor, Sean Connery, who is an actor, Terry O’Neill, who is a photographer, Johnny Gold, who was the boss of Tramp, and [bold]Leslie Bricusse[/bold], who is a composer. Come to think of it, I don’t meet other people often enough to become friends with them. I don’t meet stockbrokers, or carpenters, or coal miners, I spend all day with actors, composers and photographers.’
How sad, they're all gone.

In the past he has listed his his four best friends as Roger Moore, dead in 2017, actor Terry O'Neill, who died November 2019; Connery, who died Halloween, 2020; Johnny Gold (owned the club Tramp,) who died 10/8/21; and Leslie Bricusse, who died yesterday at 90, 10/19/21.
He was talking about Bricusse, while still smarting about Gold.

Caine's close friend was the photographer (and much-loathed ex-husband of Miss Dunaway) Terry O'Neill, not the actor of the same name.

If I were going to be hauled up in a chalet in Gstaad in Winter with a bunch of actors of that era I’d choose Peter o’toole, Omar sharif, Roger Moore, Michael Caine, Ursula Andress (she looks like fun) and give me some glamorous European couples like Alain delon and romy schneider and throw in liz and Richard burton and someone crazy like Helmut Berger for good measure. They seem like they would have partied at least. The idea of Audrey Hepburn and or Deborah Kerr, Blake edwards and Julie Andrews… doesn’t sound particularly exciting
