Eldergays: Tell us about wearing pants above the navel.
I have often seen vintage pics of men from the days of yore wearing pants well above or close to navel. Was it the norm? And did you like it? I find it quite hot as it accentuates the torso but its also darn uncomfortable to wear pants like that.
Picture related: Robert Conrad

Any topic that gives an excuse to include a picture of Robert Conrad without his shirt is okay by me.

Fat people can’t do that.

Has any male come forward to say that he had sex with Robert Conrad? I've heard the rumors but never any first-hand reports.

It is difficult for most men to successfully carry off pants above the navel — Robert Conrad, of course, being an exception.

TV shows weren't allowed to show a navel. Barbara Eden's Jeannie costume famously covered hers.

I used to have a Savile Row tailor that would have a meltdown if I ever suggested a pair of suit pants from him that were lower than that. They always had the buttons and deep notch on the back, too. You can still buy pants like that, too, if you want to spend at least US$7,500 for a suit. Or find it at a Goodwill in a rich neighborhood I guess.

The first exposure of a navel in a TV series occurred in 1961 on the Dr. Kildare series.

High waist is actually the silhouette right now. As Y2K retro accelerates, expect waistlines to drop and drop.

The young girls in my neighborhood all wear high-waisted pants. Some of the hipper boys do too.

Yes R4, as I've posted before, my good (male) friend , a NYC editor, had an affair with Conrad that lasted several months. He said that Conrad was absolutely amazing looking, and batshit crazy. Was physically very violent -- liked beating tricks up, or being beaten up. His second wife (according to one of their kids) left him several times because of the violence).
According to my friend, he did sleep with women but not as often with men. He liked young blond twinks. But they had to be young blond top twinks.
Some weird combination of machismo, catholic guilt, a public image built up over the years, and not being, frankly, terribly smart created a bit of a monster. And the fact that throughout the late 50s and 60s just about everyone, male or female, wanted to sleep with him. Doesn't do much to tame a wildly out of control ego.

That's not true.
Sea Hunt, Hawaiian Eye, Adventures in Paradise would all show the occasional navel. Before 1961.

I sometimes wear high waisted trousers with suspenders. It’s much more comfortable than belted low rise pants. It also keeps my little paunch from muffin topping over the front. The shirt also stays tucked.

Slacks used to be worn high, on your natural waistline. This was the "correct" way to wear trousers because it had the effect of lengthening your legs and shortening your torso, and, sans belt, your hips acted as a natural barrier to them falling down. Pleats allowed you to sit down and move easily in your high rise slacks.
Around the mid-50, with the rise in casual wear, flat-fronted chinos, khakis and denim jeans became the rage, and these never looked good worn high, so they were worn a few inches below the navel, resting on the hipbones.

Sorry, no matter how hot the guy, waist high pants just look too womanly for me.

I never realized how much a young Tyrone looked like what I imagine a young Stanley Tucci would look like.
To all grammar trolls (not that I can see your posts) I don’t care if that sentence was grammatically incorrect.

The title made me laugh.
Good strategy if you're not fat fat, but have a wide waist a little pooch.
