OP- You say you HATE cake, then you should try my Perfect Chocolate Cake- it's a recipe from one of my mother's old cook books ( though she never made this cake). It's a triple layer cake with chocolate buttercream frosting but instead of frosting between the layers it had whipped cream- so it was chocolate cake, whipped cream, chocolate cake, whipped cream, chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream frosting on the sides and top- a FABULOUS cake.

r102 Here's one from the BronzeAge(Gay) I like trifle, make it sometimes for a holiday dessert. You can use various cakes as a base, but I prefer to make an orange chiffon cake for it. Tear it into chunks, layer it with: custard, whipped cream, sliced almonds, raspberry preserves, fresh raspberries, usually I include a sweetish alcohol( sherry, fruit brandy, marsala, etc) Prepare several hours ahead of service so everything melds, use a tall, clear glass bowl to really show it off. It's always a spectacular presentation.
You can vary the cake, preserves, nuts, fruit, alcohol(if using) I was served a Chocolate Cherry trifle once and it was outstanding. I'll bet a Mango Trifle with macadamia nuts, mango curd and fruit, coconut and peach liqueur would be memorable.
Make one of your choice and call it by its Italian name: Zuppa Inglese(English Soup)
by Anonymous | reply 109 | September 29, 2021 9:11 PM |
If you like banana bread and various kinds of muffins (blueberry), those are cakes.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | September 29, 2021 11:00 PM |
Cake can be lovely, but I'm always a bit wary of don't know the baker.
Trifle is wonderful stuff, or can be. I had a friend and neighbor who made it for me often, and made it sound as if it were no more bother than thing a glass from a shelf. I can see it now in a tall, clear glass server (as R109 suggests), beautiful and bright and light and so refreshing.

I love cake, buttercream only. As a kid, all the adults would take a “sliver” & leave the frosting behind, & I would eat the leftover icing. My favorite bakery was Spivey’s, they were known for their frosting, but closed around 1990. I don’t get pie people at all, it’s usually just fruit with a soggy crust. I also don’t get whipped cream people either!

But I just assumed out there somewhere it is someone's birthday, and they might be sad and alone, and not celebrating because they thought no one cared, but I CARED, so I sang happy birthday, blew out the lone candle, and ate it. Not all of it, but sufficient.

Well, I wouldn't discount these recipes on ingredients alone - after all, pound cake consists of flour, sugar, eggs, butter. Many of these desserts are tasty. I don't think the water pie sounds very good, but buttermilk pie is delicious and I've made green tomato pie myself - it tastes very much like apple pie.

R137 is from Michigan. Metro Detroit? I lived there 38 years ago. Bumpy cake brings memories of my Gramps. He's visit up on Saturday afternoon and bring us jellied orange slices, and a bumpy cake from Sanders bakery. We ate Sanders Ice Cream, and our favorite treat was a cream puff hot fudge Sundae with Sander's hot fudge. Detroit had a lot of great local stuff, Sanders, Awrey's Bakery, Better Made Potato Chips, Vernor's Ginger Ale, Faygo, and my parents always talked about what a wealthy city it was back in the day when the auto barons like Henry Ford II walked the earth. World class symphony, and a world class at museum.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | October 1, 2021 2:19 PM |
There's a local grocery that sells double slices of its own version of Sander's bumpy cake, which is a devil's food sheet cake topped with thick lines of cream and covered with chocolate glaze. If you eat the whole thing it's 700 calories. It's like a spa treatment for the senses.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | October 1, 2021 3:27 PM |
R137 here. Yes R151 I’m from Detroit but I moved away over 20 years ago. I still have many fond memories. My mother was the one that got me addicted to Sander’s because she was addicted to it! I was craving Bumpy Cak so badly during Covid that I attempted to make one myself. It looked horrible but tasted delicious!
My grandparents would tell me many stories of how great the city used to be. It was pretty depressing growing up in a city that was majorly f’ed up & in decline.
