Hot Beck Bennett is gone and yet Kenan's fat, untalented ass is like kudzu that will never go away
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 27, 2021 5:41 PM |
I do not enjoy Taran Killam.
But I really like Beck, and thought he was hot as Putin.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 27, 2021 5:41 PM |
I always thought Bennett should have been the anchor for "Weekend Update," since he became famous doing those ads where he was the news reporter interviewing children.
I'm sure he's leaving either by his own choice or because he pissed off Lorne Michaels (which frequently happens, as with Taran Killam) rather than because he was thought to be weak.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 27, 2021 5:41 PM |
Was he fired?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 27, 2021 5:41 PM |
Wasn't something said once about Beck threatening to walk if Kyle Mooney was fired? But Kyle is coming back, so I guess that was either not true or this decision had nothing to do with him.

He saw Jason Sudeikis win an Emmy and decided he can do the same.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 27, 2021 5:48 PM |
Bennett is as handsome and as well-built as Sudeikis, but he is not as tall nor as good an actor.

Taran Killam Sanchez knows.

Lauren Holt, the Aidy Bryant doppelganger who I don't recall ever being in a single sketch, is also leaving. I'm sure it wasn't her choice.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 27, 2021 6:54 PM |
The show is in such a holding pattern, with this aged cast and Jost and Che refusing to budge from the head writers’ position. Never in its history has there been this little turnover, and it shows—SNL has never been this stale and toothless.

I love Cecily Strong, but I am really surprised that she is returning. I was sure she was being given a farewell when she sang My Way on Update at the end of last season.
I’m glad she is back, but the show really needs new blood. Che and Jost should be moved from Update too. They come across as stale and smug.

Yeah, there some poster who posted in various SNL threads who claimed that Beck would quit if Kyle was fired. That poster claimed that Beck acted as if he and Kyle were a package deal and that Lorne had been wanting to fire Kyle, but couldn't because of Beck. I thought those posts were total bullshit because Lorne Michaels doesn't seem like the type to agree to a deal like that or put up with that kind of stuff.

Keenan is the retarded Huxtable uncle we never saw. He's like set furniture.

And yet Kyle "the cockroach" endures.

Well, the two of them were hired together, and they both worked together in the comedy troupe Good Neighbor before SNL. I don't think anyone thought they were literally a package deal, but the two of them have been pretty much inseparable on the show. But Kyle is the definitely the weaker of the two.

Taran Killam was finishing up a movie he directed and he claims he wasn't allowed to miss any shows, which used to be the rule. Apparently Jon Lovitz was axed because he was going to miss a week or two while filming Mom and Dad Save the World.
Now Pete comes and goes and Keenan is only there a few days per week while he films a sitcom
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 28, 2021 4:24 AM |
Pete Davidson has a special status. He can do whatever the fuck he wants because everybody's afraid he'll kill himself if he doesn't get his way and they don't want that on their conscience.
Many, many years ago there was another basket case at NBC named Jessica Savitch. She was an anchorwoman for NBC News and they did exactly the same thing with her. She was a drug-addled insane mess but got away with it because the NBC brass were afraid she'd kill herself if anyone told her "no."

A few articles mentioned that Lorne has loosened up on that "rule." He's now okay with people doing things outside of the show. He has to be, really. He has locked down more than a few cast members that ALSO want to do things outside of the show for years and he may not have players/a show strong enough to withstand a mass exit of all of them.
I'm sure his change of heart is why Kate, Aidy and Cecily came back.
Kate will be filming Joe Exotic at some point while SNL is still on.
As for Beck, during their SNL at home is was in Los Angeles where he lives. I think 8 years is long enough to try and do something else.

[quote]The show has been running on fumes for almost two decades. Maybe it's time to end it.
Last season of SNL was the top rated show in all of TV. It's must-watch TV for younger viewers. A lot of that is due to Pete Davidson, who is a big draw among the coveted youth demographic. NBC should send Ariana Grande a big check for turning him into a superstar. Pete is the biggest star on the show.
For the first time in its history, Saturday Night Live finished ahead of every other entertainment show in the ratings — not just in late night, but across all of ad-supported TV.
The NBC series wrapped its 46th season as the top entertainment program (i.e., not including sports telecasts) among adults 18-49. It’s the top-rated comedy in the key ad demographic for the second consecutive season.
“SNL is one of the most culturally significant shows in television history, and being No. 1 in its 46th season is a testament to how that relevance has continued to grow over the past five decades,” said Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “One of the greatest gifts of this role is being able to watch the SNL team do what they do each week, all while keeping the show as strong and vibrant as ever.”
by Anonymous | reply 87 | September 28, 2021 7:45 PM |
It's so interesting to me how long cast members stay with the show these days. The original cast only stayed five years (Chevy left after one year, Belushi and Ackroyd left after four, and Murray came a year late but left with the remainder of the originals). 5-7 season was pretty much the standard until this most recent group. I guess that speaks to Lorne being more flexible but also to the show no longer being seen by performers as a 'stepping stone', as it was in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 28, 2021 9:08 PM |
r88, that was before Lorne saw that owning SNL talent in perpetuity was good for him at the cost of the performers. How much of Ted Lasso does he own?
by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 28, 2021 10:07 PM |
[quote]5-7 season was pretty much the standard until this most recent group.
It's a one-sided contract. Ultimately they're signed for 7 seasons (it used to be 6 seasons when Tina Fey was there) unless the show lets them go sooner OR they get pulled out to do a tv series or another project for NBC.
If they go more than 7 they have to renegotiate. Michael Che's was up (he hit 7 seasons) and he talked about it. Apparently, they've renegotiated.
At one point the show didn't want another Adam Sandler (who did his best stuff after SNL and made crazy money) so they did their best to lock people in for YEARS. At one point if they pulled you out for a TV series, they could then lock you into another contract for 6 years with that show. So you could be on SNL for 6 years and then have to do a tv series for 6 years. They had the ability to turn down some of what was offered (I think the first two attempts to move them to somewhere else) but got stuck with the third. There was a huge article that came out years ago about how bad the contract was.
[quote]How much of Ted Lasso does he own?
Ted Lasso didn't start out on SNL. It started out on NBC Sports. While he left SNL the same year he did Ted Lasso, he created the character outside of the series.

Even before the indentured servitude contracts, 95% of SNL repertory players went on to do little or nothing great after the show.
So it's in their best interest to stay on the gravy train as long as possible.

It's been said that Mike Myers had the idea for Austin Powers while he was still on SNL but he didn't tell anyone and kept it to himself until after he left the show and his contract with Lorne. He knew it had the potential to be a huge hit and wanted sole ownership of the character and didn't want Lorne to share in creative control and the profits. It turned out to be a very smart decision, as the Austin Powers movies made Myers a bloody fortune.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | September 29, 2021 12:24 AM |
With SNL now the top-rated show in all of TV, why doesn't the main cast ask for a lot more money? The show is a goldmine because it's one of the only shows on network TV today that still attracts young viewers. Shouldn't the cast be making as much as the actors on The Big Bang Theory? I don't know how Lorne Michaels gets away with paying them so little.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | September 29, 2021 12:24 AM |
[quote]95% of SNL repertory players went on to do little or nothing great after the show.
The casts from the Tina Fey - Seth Meyers era did well.
The same goes for the ones from the Adam Sandler/David Spade/Chris Farley era.
Before you'd have one or two people that disappeared. Now you have only a few that breakout and they try their best to hold on to them.
Some like Jay Pharoh disappears while Leslie Jones does well. Taran Killam does voice work but Sasheer Zamata's tv series is on season 2 while she voices a Marvel Comics show. (Don't get me wrong, I liked all of these people but post SNL it's all over the place these days.)
by Anonymous | reply 97 | September 29, 2021 12:31 AM |
It's always been all over the place for SNL alum: of the original cast, Chase, Ackroyd, and Murray (technically not an original as he replace Chase in the second season) had great careers for a period of time, at least. Garret Morris wound up showing up in supporting roles in sitcoms years after he left the show. For the women, Gilda never really took off after leaving the show and it's hard to say what might have happened with her career had she lived (same for Belushi). Newman basically disappeared (though her daughter is doing quite well for herself these days), so really only Jane Curtin had a high profile post-SNL career of the women and that was all on television. Murphy was the big star of the second generation, JLD wound up with a great career though Seinfeld came at least a decade after SNL. No one from the very funny, but older cast of the late 1980s really took off (Myers came in at the tail end of this group), but Hartman passed away, Lovitz is around, but Nealon, Miller, Carvey (outside of Wayne's World which was all Myers) never really got going. Same with the women which is a shame because Jan Hooks was the absolute greatest.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | September 29, 2021 1:07 AM |
r87 - SNL might be the highest rated entertainment program on TV for last season (COVID lockdown), but really what are we looking at? An average demo audience (18-49) that amounts to 2.67 million people? That's roughly the population of Chicago. For Christ's sake, the #2 show was "The Masked Singer" on Fox.

R99, Their demo rating translates to 3.5 million viewers aged 18-49. In 2021, that is a big number for network TV, and advertisers are willing to pay big bucks to reach them. SNL is thus a goldmine for NBC.
Because of its strength in the 18-49 demo, NBC was able to charge almost three times as much for a commercial during Friends as CBS charged for Murder, She Wrote, even though the two series had a similar amount of total viewership during the two seasons they were on the air concurrently.

by Anonymous | reply 105 | September 29, 2021 2:08 AM |
I thought Beck was cute, funny, and good because no matter how stupid or not the characterization or skit, he gave it his all creatively like a good SNL castmember. And, yeah, I found him to be sexy as well!
The show is beyond crap-point now. It's just become the most corporate it's ever been. And that in 2021, we have only two males for several years now at their mid-show news anchor desk -- just completely baffles me. It's part of a greater thing that bugs me about this show, it never changes anything. Even the best, most successful and longest-running TV hits have to evolve.
I think they have so many castmembers and "featured players" now, exactly because of Lorne's allowing many of the star players to bow out for weeks as a time to work on their off-program special projects. And if "SNL" is considered the highest-rated program, then I think that's kind of pathetic when looking at the bigger picture of the crap that's out there that it might be (kinda...) in competition against.
I agree with R105 and hope we see Beck in some new, different and better things sooner rather than later.

Before her, I thought the worst featured player to get canned after a single season was Beth Cahill. But she at least had her Miss Chicago Weekend Update character.
Jenny Slate, Noel Wells, and Sarah Silverman were not good on the show, but you could tell they had something to offer.

Maybe there’s a big mid season replacement show announcement coming in his near future that he’s getting set to work on. I wouldn’t have thought I’d be this disappointed at his leaving if you said one person is going, but now I’m like anyone but Beck!

Melissa Villaseñor and Kyle Mooney should be the ones to leave, so unfunny.

Taran Killam was great.
It’s time for Kate to go. And Pete.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | September 29, 2021 9:51 AM |
Gawd, remembering their Tim Russert lionization-fest, I can't imagine the hysterics NBC will go into when Lorne Michaels finally dies.
The entire network will go dark for a week and they will show nothing but clips of Lorne Michaels making cameos on SNL.
GET A GRIP AHEAD OF TIME, NBC. He made a lot of money for you. We, the viewers, don't care.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | September 29, 2021 9:52 AM |
Kyle can go too!
Lorne Michaels should be replaced by Conan O’Brien.

NBC just won premiere week by the largest margin in ratings history. NBC has officially ended ABC, CBS and FOX in the ratings. The other networks simply can't compete with NBC, especially in the key 18-49 demo, and juggernaut SNL sets the tone for the network. Lorne Michaels is Head Bitch at NBC and his power is immense.
NBC Wins Premiere Week by Largest Margin in Ratings History
Tony Maglio Tue, September 28, 2021
NBC didn’t just win Fall TV Premiere Week (Sept. 20-26, 2021) in ratings and in total viewers — it obliterated the competition.
With a 57% advantage in the key demo (adults 18-49) ratings over No. 2 and a 49% margin in total viewers, NBC just set a new record for the widest gaps between any first and any second place broadcast network in measurement history.

There was a fall premiere week? Somebody didn’t do very well at getting that message out, I heard nothing about it.

Both Melissa and Kyle have talent but it’s rarely been showcased properly. They aren’t strong personalities like Kate or Beck. They’re more esoteric.

R121 Melissa is great at impersonations, but she sucks in sketches where's not impersonating a celeb.

I like Melissa, she's great at impressions as R123 said. I really couldn't pick Kyle Mooney out of a crowd, even if my life depended on it.

DL is the only place I hear people say Beck is hot. He’s average looking, the Mike meyers (not the killer) of his day.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | September 29, 2021 10:56 PM |
R104 - I understand how advertisers (stupidly) overvalue demo market shares -- and how it's kind of come back to bite them on the ass since the coveted 18-49 set moved on to streaming and video games years ago. I wager most people who watch broadcast TV are now late 50s to 80s. I can't even get my elderly parents to cancel cable despite their watching mostly channels with stream services (i.e. HBO Max, Disney+). So yes, have a strong hold on the "youth" market still means higher ad rates.
Also, I was quoting the article link from R87 that clearly states the demo average was 2.7M. That might be a big number now, but it is not a big number in reality land.

You are delusional if you think that's average. 60% of Americans are obese, that is what is average. You can tell he works out, not to any extreme or model or gym bunny but at least he is in decent shape, flat stomach. A healthy normal man. Not a bear, not a chub, not skinny fat. More so than the rest of the cast for sure.

How could he? When would he have even had the time.
He did "All That" and "Kenan & Kel" back to back from, 1994 to 2000.
Then he joined the cast of SNL in 2003.
The only time he didn't have a TV series was from sometime in 2000 to sometime in 2003.
(And even during that period he did 4 episodes of Felicity and a few one-offs on other shows.)
The man has never stopped working.

How much does Kate McKinnon make per season of SNL? I'm sure she's the highest paid cast member.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | September 30, 2021 10:30 PM |
Trump impersonations became really unfunny in 2017. Partly because it's too easy and everyone was doing it. Also, I believe everyone is staying for the big 50th anniversary episode. After that Lorne and Kenan will leave. I think more than half of the cast will leave with them and Bowen, Chloe, and Heidi will be the senior cast members. The usual stay on SNL is 5 or 6 years and more than half of the cast are well past that.

The 50th anniversary is still four years away. Lorne Michaels is now 76. I don't think he can keep the devil at bay that long.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | October 1, 2021 3:11 AM |
Yeah I just checked, and I thought the anniversary was more like a year or two away. But I swear I heard or read somewhere that was what he was holding out for. Maybe it was Las Culturistas? They had Aidy or Cecily on recently. I think he could make it. He just probably won't work at the same capacity, its gonna be more of a title position until the big 5-0.

I'm shocked that the top 2 earners--Kate McKinnon and Colin Jost--only make $525k a season. How does NBC get away with paying them such low salaries when the show is a huge hit? And why does the cast accept it?
by Anonymous | reply 144 | October 1, 2021 5:42 AM |
So they pay the big names, what two minutes of commercial time is a SEASON?
by Anonymous | reply 145 | October 1, 2021 6:22 AM |
SNL only does 20 episodes a season. They spread out from early October to late May. They go weeks into reruns within a month of the new season. Yawn...They aren't funny anymore. And Bowens sissy girl act isn't original. How many unfunny times are we going to see Kate do Rudy this season? Again. Not funny.

Wow that is really low r144.
I once heard David Spade discuss how they also don't let you know if you'll be back the next season until very late and because the salary is so low he couldn't maintain his NY apartment while he spent the summer in LA trying to get other acting jobs. He'd have to move out every May and then come back and find a new one in Sept. when he knew if he was being kept on the show.

Not for TV r151. Actors on long running hits make much more (or they used to)
Friends, Seinfeld got 1 million an episode.
Kate was carrying the show by herself for a bit there (until her stuff got old.) She was a huge part of the success.

[quote] I'm shocked that the top 2 earners--Kate McKinnon and Colin Jost--only make $525k a season. How does NBC get away with paying them such low salaries when the show is a huge hit? And why does the cast accept it?
1. Why the fuck is Colin Jost paid the most? McKinnon makes sense. They cast her in every skit. It's practically her show. Jost just shares the news segment with Michael Che, and didn't he and Che take the position together? (And is it really worth it to pay a half million a year for that job? Weekend Update seems like it would be the easiest of all skits to perform. They literally just read jokes and laugh at themselves for five minutes a week.)
2. Cecily Strong should be used as much as McKinnon and paid as much as McKinnon.
3. I think McKinnon deserves her pay or even more. She annoys me but it isn't her fault. Just like Kristen Wiig before her, she is overused to the point of being grating on the audience, but both have been overused because they are the funniest/most talented people in the cast. But whomever decides who gets to star in skits should be a lot more judicious and hold her back from a lot of them. Some of her original creations, like the alien abductee, are hilarious. She never should have played Giuliani or Sessions as a vampire/bat or opossum. Those were stupid ideas that took away the punch that you know they both felt seeing a woman play them.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | October 1, 2021 10:35 AM |
