He really did steal scenes from Pacino in Scarface, which was no small feat considering -- as r23 said -- Pacino was hamming it up and playing to the back row. His laid-back, sensitive portrayal of Manny was a nice contrast to Pacino's over-the-top portrayal of Tony.

He was so charming in Scarface, too. He had great chemistry with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and their love story in the film was touching and tragic.

Totally agree with OP - Steven Bauer was insanely hot when he was young. Thief of Hearts MUST MUST be released on blu-ray in the UNRATED version (not seen since the laserdisc days) which has a little extra skin. This is a holy grail for me.
