I don't think she's bi only straight. She's a better writer than she is an actress.

One of the episodes in season 1 is about how women can't just turn gay on command, as some straight men like to think. Her character Liz Lemon is sort-of pressured into a date with a lesbian, and while Liz does enjoy her date's presence and is herself desperate to find a partner (mostly because she's scared of suffering an accident at home and have no one pay assistance), she just can't get into sex stuff with another woman. But she does make this charming proposal to the date:

[quote]What do you say, we make a pact? If, say, in twenty-five years, neither of us has found somebody. We'll move in together and become roommates. And even though I am... not into the sex stuff, if it helps you, I would let you... do stuff to me.

Both Tina and Liz identify strongly with second-wave feminism and share its disgust for the commodification of the female body. You see them both (ie, both Tina and her character) voice contempt at women who built their fame on being sexy -- Madonna, for example. That's why it's kind of hard to see Tina as a bi -- because, let's be honest, the phenomenon of female celebrity bisexuality is largely based on the commercialization of women's sexuality.

The Jenna Maroney character is the one that seems to embody this bisexual/sexually ravenous archetype of female celebrities.

There's a scene -- I believe in season 4 -- where the Liz-Jenna relationship is reenacted by lesbian porn actresses under the direction of Tracy Jordan. The real Liz and Jenna are watching it, but Liz leaves the room in disgust just as the two actresses start to get into it. Jenna, on the other hand, pretends to follow her outside, but she's actually dragging her foot because she likes what she sees.

Here's the thing, though: Jenna, as a whole, is portrayed as juvenile, sociopathic, and dumb -- you can tell that Tina if not Liz looks down on her. And her bisexuality seems to be an extension of her polymorphous perversity -- her ability to find sexual pleasure in anything, including car accidents (a real paraphilia, by the way). Jenna is there in part to contrast with Liz as opposite prototypes of showbiz women, one being the perfect opposite of the other, so I would think that bisexuality is among the qualities that Tina seems to find alien to herself, though Tina is too smart and disciplined to ever put things this way; it's there as subtext, however.

She's been with one man, her husband, her whole life. Unusual.

Her friends in high school and college were lesbians.

She is cute.

by Anonymousreply 7September 12, 2021 2:41 PM

She jokes/ is open about how she graduated college still a virgin.

by Anonymousreply 8September 12, 2021 2:44 PM

Tina Fey, who I think is a gifted satirist, also strikes me as really mean and unpleasant. I'm surprised she isn't still a virgin. She's talented, but I get a real damaged mean streak vibe from her. I wish I was wrong, because she is so funny. But Tina Fey seems mad about everything.

She's 51. She seems like the Meredith Baxter type who might change her mind at 60 when she gets bored and craves some lesbian domestic drama in her life. Keep the faith.

by Anonymousreply 10September 12, 2021 3:15 PM

Baxter was always gay and just in closet

Agree that she's a better writer than actor. Liz Lemon became less funny and believable the more she played her as a confident woman. I liked her alcoholic therapist on Kimmy Schmidt.
