It's been years, literally, since we've had a thread about gohdjusss handsome Michael, British star of the RANK org, hunk for the ages, brother in law to Natalie Wood and thus, uncle of daughter Natasha . Who else loves this vintage hottie ?

[quote] you gurls are always fawning all over our actors and then bitching about how ugly we are.
But isn't he Canadian?
I thought it ridiculous he had to play second fiddle to the effeminately limp Dirk Bogarde or stolid Stanley Baker.
I'd like to know the facts about his Rank contract and the Columbia contract.
Was he too pretty? Columbia didn't put him in bigger roles.
Did you see his fleeting penis nude scene? He was wearing a towel in some dopey comedy circa 1960 with some blond crumpet.
He was extraordinarily beautiful in that drama, late 50s, when he was going undercover in Marseilles, I think.
He was heterosexual (and perhaps, slightly dumb). His second wife was a strumpet Australian sheilah who was as ugly as Juliet Prowse.
What about the goss between him and Visconti and Streisand and Julie 'Milk-Shake' Andrews?

Visconti wanted TAB HUNTER in that role - but the money people wanted Craig so he had to disappoint poor old TAB to whom he'd promised the role.

I said he may be slightly dumb earlier at R17.
But I read his memoirs but they had no answers to all my questions at R17. There are no interesting details or gossip about Streisand, Rank, Bogarde or anything.
He and MISTER Natalie Wood co-write the script for that ugly film 'The Angry Silence' with was nominated for an Oscar in 1960.

“The angry silence” was a good film from what I remember having watched it once. Turns out I’ve seen him in the Visconti, “yield to the night” and “the angry silence”, I’m stew I noticed how handsome he is, but I don’t think his performances left mud got an impression as I think I’d forgotten he’d been in all three.

The problem film they made after Sapphire was called 'Victim'.

He was kept in a stranglehold contract by the J Arthur Rank Organisation and forced to appear in their own small-scale films through the 1950s. It refused to loan him and Dirk Bogarde out to good film-makers.

by Anonymous | reply 70 | August 31, 2021 7:22 PM |
r69 Michael is one of the very beautiful actors of the 60's, he was a brother of Richard gregson, Natalie Wood's second husband, he was born in India, and was a huge star of Rank, rival to Dirk Bogarde, who was jealous that all the butch roles went ever to him. He was in the hugely popular "doctors series", in Visconti's gorgeous "Sandra", and many interesting movies of the era, then married in Australia and settled there. You never heard of him before because you weren't ready to behold the gorgeousness and worship at the altar, and because he's one of these actors who are quietly beautiful, like Sam Elliott, and don't make a fuss over it.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | August 31, 2021 7:29 PM |
also R69, in Mysterious island, he's the last to take off his clothes, so you have to be patient, and Michael was an oscar nominated screenwriter, so brains and beauty

'Michael Craig' had bad luck.
1. he was trapped in that Rank contract by the awful John Davis'
2. he didn't the intelligence or luck to do much with his career after Davis released him from that contract.
3. he was christened as 'Michael Gregson' but he was obliged to change his surname so as not to be confused with that rather boring man named John Gregson (with whom he starred once)

I don’t speak Italian, so I had to turn on the auto-generated subtitles on Youtube. And I can’t agree that it’s sublime.
Everyone else seems to think it one of Visconti’s lesser efforts (along with White Nights’ and ‘Conversation Piece’). The original title is means “Glimmering stars of the Great Bear” and it’s supposedly about the disintegration of a decadent family so therefore the film is shot within the poorly-illuminated rooms of an ancient castle.
Visconti was obviously obsessed over pretty Jean Sorel and then in the sullen bimbo playing the main role.
And poor Michael looks abandoned and clueless on a set where everyone else speaks a foreign language.

'Miss little whiny bitch' said some shocking things about Davis in his 7 volumes of memoirs that I don't know whether to believe them.
But even placid Alec Guinness couldn't contain his anger about vulgar Davis in is memoirs.
Flora Robson said something similar.

2. Not particularly successful career.

His biography on Wiki is a very long list of failures and near-misses at the fringes of fame.
