OP, it would help if you post a link to the actual show he was on.
What you described never happened. The celebrity guest was Gina Lollobrigida. Of course he knew who she was. Maybe not visa versa, as he was new, but nothing in the clip shows that.

His shows had big stars from that era. Dick almost had a "Columbo" type vibe. Like he was just playing dumb. But he always interrupted the guest and seemed to cause dead air & confusion.
