Oh yeah! SJWs would just love gems like:
Babies don’t cost money, they make money…especially the little white ones.
He’s Greek. And a Greek is just a Jew without money.
Jerri: Faggot. Mr Noblet: What did you say? Jerri: What did you hear? Mr Noblet: I’d rather not repeat it. Jerri: Then I guess we’ll never know.
You’re just a rack of bones covered in a thin layer of fat.
I’m not adopted and I’m not an Indian. It’s just a coincidence that I have a love of gambling and booze and a knack for catching syphilis

I have the box set of this show. Don’t have anything to watch it on anymore. But there was one episode I remember seeing that I can never find. It’s when Jerri’s stepmom accused her of wiping her ass with the guest towels. Of course, she had.

I loved the episode where they wanted to come up with a theme for the prom. The idea started as a 'purity dance' for those who championed their virginity. Somehow the idea morphed into 'racial purity' with Jerri's help.

I just rewatched this over the weekend, and yeah, I questioned several times while watching how it stayed on the air for three seasons. I enjoyed the aggressive non-pc aspects, but people would freak out today. I especially enjoyed Mr Jellineck in a speedo. He was sure hiding his light under a bushel throughout most of the series.
Some of the Jerri shtick got a little old, and it was difficult to understand how any of her actual friends could put up with her. There were several cute high school boys that were interested in her that required a strenuous effort in suspending disbelief. One of them was blind, so that helped.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 25, 2021 7:52 PM |
It's a hilarious show, but I really don't know if it would get by today. Even when it initially aired, they got away with a lot, because not that many people were watching. It was always a cult show, but like most cult shows, its reputation and audience has grown over the years.
Notice that most of the Twitter warriors don't get as up in arms about more culty TV shows and movies, because that's not going to get them as much attention as going after a bigger named movie or TV show. You'll get a few crazies here and there who'll make a big stink, but if you click on their profile, it's normally just some weirdo with 3 followers and way too much time on their hands.

I don't think that much programming from that era of Comedy Central would get made today. "Viva Variety," "The Man Show," "Frank Leaves For The Orient," "Upright Citizens Brigade," that game show with Ben Stein. They all had a vibe that now reads as alt-right.

R7, I don't remember anything about guest towels. Could you be thinking of Season One, Episode One, '𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬, 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬,' where Sara Blank, Jerri's stepmother, admonishes her, "And don't rub your feces on the lampshade" (as Jerri struggles to pull down her pants)?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | August 25, 2021 10:58 PM |
I always thought Paul Dinello was gay, because Amy talked about how her ex came out to her and she and Paul dated. Add to that, all the homoerotic shtick that they were doing on the show and he was writing most of the episodes.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 25, 2021 11:00 PM |
There was a wiping-ass-with-towels story in one of David Sedaris's stories about his upbringing. I forget if he blamed it on Amy.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 25, 2021 11:00 PM |
It was in the final episode with Winona Ryder. Winona Ryder's character came over to make Jerri cool, and her stepmother asked her if she wiped her ass on the guest towels in front of Winona.

There was way more censorship in the past, have you Republicans ever heard of the Hollywood production code?

The episode "Boogie Nights" when Jerry gets reunited with the son she abandoned as a baby and the only memento he has is a rotten tooth which he wears on a chain around his neck. To prove she's not his mother, she shoves the tooth where she has a missing molar and it fits perfectly, and the chain is hanging out of her mouth! So funny. So creative.

R32, Jerry was supposed to be fat. What do you have against fat people since I'm guessing you are. The right-wing cows who bitch about "woke" shit are usually enormous, the red states are usually the fattest states

[quote]Jimmy Kimmel has had to apologize for doing blackface to play Karl Malone on "The Man Show". I'm surprised no one has turned on Stephen Colbert for just being on "Strangers With Candy".
Why, R28? I don't recall any blackface on SWC. That isn't to say they didn't have some fun with race, as with the character 'Principal Onyx Blackman' (Greg Hollimon) who, after having run Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello out of the school basement for screwing around, invites a female student down, saying, "Mmmm-mmm! Bring your fine, white ass down here!"
That series was funny as hell, pure gold. :D

by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 25, 2021 11:46 PM |
Jerri called her brother fag a lot, and was always insulting telling him he was gay. The joke was that he did seem to be, he told his teammates they should go watch gay porn to get pumped up for a game, he didn't want to hide in the closet and masturbate while spying on Jerri's slumber party (his mother's suggestion) because he wanted to read his gladiator magazine, etc.. He would also get all tongue tied and doofy around pretty girls though, so who knows. They stayed vague.

Amazing series. Movie prequel was lame due to not being quite the same tone as the series as well as several characters having been recast.
It's because of the whole SJW/Snowflake/Cancel Culture movement that we can't get revivals of this show, Married with Children or Drawn Together. Also it's most likely why we'll probably never get another John Waters film.

The show would never fly today. Back when it aired, the Indian episode caused a mini-scandal. My Native American coworker knew I loved the show & asked if I could record the episode for her. The original pilot is almost a completely different show. Jerri is a LOT less sleazy. Her stepmother was originally played by the actress who played the gym teacher. And Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello played multiple roles each.

I love this show, But no one cares about it or Comedy Central anymore. They could show the beheading of Melania Trump live but it would only be seen by about 50, 000. Most of whoms are high. No one would believe it. As much as I loved Strangers With Candy, it wasn't that transgressive. In fact, it's a little dated today. Anything Jerri Blank said back then is being said again and again on cable, network and reality shows every single day. The only thing that I remember Comedy Central bleeping out from a Strangers With Candy episode was when she "stole the TV" and ended up back in jail. At the end of the episode, while alone in her jail cell looking at the camera, she wailed, "My asshole is HUNGRY!!" Now THAT is something you still won't hear or see on network or streaming TV channels. Unless you count Michael Strahan's behind-the-scenes preparation for "Good Morning America." Sorry, but that guy is a flaming homo hiding in plain sight.

Back in the era when a successful TV show was naturally expected to create a “movie version” for theaters, the Strangers With Candy movie version joined The Kids In The Hall and The Simpsons films as being done too late, or changing the formula too much, trying to stretch one episode or sketch into a 90 minute film, or simply just having never been done at all.
Instead, they really should have focused on trying to do a fourth season (but it had been cancelled, and the cast and creators apparently didn’t want to anyway).
by Anonymous | reply 105 | February 27, 2022 10:54 AM |
As a huge fan of the tv show back when it was bing aired, I and many others were disillusioned by how bad the film version was.
They switched or replaced some cast members for actors that couldn’t or didn’t want to do it. They also switched the two major locations: the school setting and Jerri’s home setting. It all was very unfamiliar.
Also, the TV show had benefited from tight, quick cinematography that seemed designed for the small screen. Close-ups of faces, cutaway details. This kind of look and editing worked great for sight gags and slapstick comedy acting. The movie version suddenly opened up the photography, and had broad shots more like a “film,” which diluted the one-two punch look of the TV show.
