I'd honestly forgotten about this show. But Season 2 begins streaming on HBO Max on Thurs, 8/26, and so I'm rewatching the first season. Several laugh-out-loud moments. Drew Tarver's awkward sexual encounters don't hurt, either.

by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 26, 2021 1:41 PM |
Does he fuck a woman this season? It is one of the staple TV tropes and even more so now that Gold star gays have been cancelled be cause they are bi/pan/trans phobes who must be publicly shamed into embracing pussies (real and fake) and lady dicks (where are obviously fake but gross as well). Carver mentioned on a now deleted podcast that he thinks has been he had too much pussy before coming out that he can't be a real gay - HA HA HA oh vey he has mastered the art of bi humble bragging (first rule is lead with the heteronormativity and close with self-loathing homophbia).
PS - I'm thinking a few asian girls have him pityfucks in college that he misinterpreted.

The premise seems played out.
Gideon Glick is amateurish.

The first episode is the hard reset going into the second season with the big time gap, the second episode racks up with the best ones from season one. They were very smart to release both.

The second episode is also lame.
Both leads look old and puffy now.

OP here...I was startled whilst watching S2 E1 how much older all the cast look. Granted--and I fully realized going in--it's been 2.5 years since the first season. But my gosh, they all look so much older. (Except Molly Shannon, who's obviously had good plastic surgery/fillers over the years.) The sister, especially, looks almost like a different person. Actually, she does look like a completely different person.
And yes, I agree that thus far this season isn't living up to S1. To the point I only watched the first ep. I'll watch the second one tomorrow, but nothing about the first one made me eager to binge. Cary finally having a boyfriend him being an ass to him isn't an appealing storyline.

R22 Noam was in the second episode and is the GrindeR date of the son, Noah and daddy, Tuc, who both want to do Molly and bottom that night before they fly home to the kids. But he has to pretend to be the other brother who’s straight so Carey and his boyfriend won’t find out they’re a couple and not lovers.
Noam did a college webseries with a gay boy and straight boy roommate, they don’t hook up though. Then he launched another more recent one with a bunch of gay boys much to old to be in college including Scotty Dynamo, his boyfriend and Andy Mientus. He may be fucking one of those roommates,I don’t remember.

OP here again...the only LOL moment in S2 E2 was the very end, in Chase's video teaser. Cliche, but still made me laugh.
Side note: Pat will crack in not very long. She won't be able to handle the pressure.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 28, 2021 6:57 PM |
After watching the first two episodes of season 2, I’ve watched six episodes of the first season and I love it. It’s so random and funny, and bitterly honest. These characters aren’t people I would want to know in real life, but I can’t stop watching. The writing and editing are savage. The acting is great.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 28, 2021 8:34 PM |
r25 whats the name of the new series? Is Andy still as insufferable as ever?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 29, 2021 6:12 PM |
R31 The series is 'The Influencers' on Amazon Prime
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 29, 2021 6:17 PM |
R31 & R32 No, it’s this one below, I guess they only got the pilot out and maybe didn’t get the funding or the pandemic shut down future episodes. Andy is insufferable in it. R32 Series was by Scotty and his partner, and kind of landed like a lead ballon. It then came out that it was launched when Scotty was dealing with a devastating cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery in the midst of the pandemic and they couldn’t really do the promotion that might have helped it find an audience.Amazon basically dumped it and ran.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 30, 2021 8:53 PM |
This is a really funny and smart series. The characters are obnoxious, but the acting and editing are perfect. It moved along at a quick pace to keep things moving along, but also because you wouldn’t want to spend too many moments with these people longer than necessary. It shares some obvious points about fame and poor parenting, but it’s so absurd and brash that I can’t help but watch.
I love that Molly Shannon has been in two really good shows recently. She deserves this success and we are seeing her stretch as an actress as well. One of these days, hopefully she’ll have her own Hacks ala Jean Smart. She is so talented and she has convinced me she’s a wonderful person in real life (although you can never know).

by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 1, 2021 8:17 AM |
Two more fantastic episodes bitches, they way it skewers celebrity, but then has some deep seated human truths is a great balance. The writers obviously hang here, the mole troll will be so happy to see himself embodied in popular entertainment. Not only are they hiring gay actors to play Carey’s dates and friends, I think all the ones for Brooke’s speed dating were gay too. And Jimmy Fowlie is back playing a married upstate gay house flipper. An an Ian Ziering cameo Cameo was icing on the cake.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 2, 2021 1:54 PM |
The first one left me a little cold, but that second episode was just fantastic.
It's also even more fun if you are familiar with NY. They were so spot on, from catching the gays eating at Elmo, to the bar choices his sister gives of the Eagle and Rebar.

I would too, R45. Drew Tarver claimed to be bi without ever having had sex with a man (according to an old interview). It always sounded like an easy out, much like Megan Mullalley’s claim when Will & Grace started.

Ditto his homely awkward boyfriend this season.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 3, 2021 7:25 AM |
This show is better than Difficult People, imho, because it really skewers current cultural trends. It's very on point and very funny doing that.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 3, 2021 8:07 AM |
OP here...S2 has gotten a bit better in E3/4 due to funnier material. As one of the commenters stated above, it's hard to envision Drew Tarver having sex with anyone of either gender. This was also addressed in 'Bajillion Dollar Listing' when he was put in sexual situations. I'm from GA close where Drew is from, and even I could be more convincing in sexual situations.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 3, 2021 4:22 PM |
I really have no interest in Drew Tarver's sexual orientation. It's a hilarious show and is spot-on in satirizing contemporary life in the digital/social media era and the shallowness of current celebrity.

R67 no, he was originally cast in the proposed spinoff of the show that never came out.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | September 3, 2021 8:20 PM |
R55, I read it in a magazine interview he gave back when season 1 came out. I’ve tried a search but can’t find it, sorry.
Yeah, it struck me as a very personal bit of info to share about not having had sex with a man, but he was in a relationship with a woman at the time. It struck me that maybe he was playing the “bi” card to avoid any criticism of a straight man in a gay role. Personally I have no problem with straight guys in gay roles and vice versa. I do think he’s cute as hell though.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 3, 2021 9:15 PM |
3 and 4 were great, better than the 1 and 2 combo. I am impressed this show manages to get a good performance out of Jimmy Fowlie whose acting I thought was bad in his web series, but I enjoy him here.
The conference call bit was great. The fear of becoming consumed as a couple bit really worked for me. And it was great they had Carey trying to meet a cameo fan in real life to get a ego hit.
Yes r53, I would love to see that character back for an ep as Carey tries to embrace being a slut.
Though sorry, I have to say Drew Tarver does not look 29.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 4, 2021 12:34 AM |
R73 Strange that they brought him back for the first episode of the season but none of the others so far. Hopefully we'll see him again.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 4, 2021 4:26 AM |
The fact they had him in the premiere means he definitely is popping back up. They referenced him again this ep when Brooke almost called him.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 4, 2021 4:57 AM |
R71 Drew came out as bisexual over 10 years ago, before he ever got this role, so I doubt he’s pretending to be bi to appease viewers. I also don’t think you need to have sexual experience with a man to know that you have romantic attraction to them.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 4, 2021 6:51 AM |
I hope Lance comes back, but as Carey’s boyfriend. There’s got to be a pretty big riff coming between Carey and Brooke that divides them for awhile, it’s basically script writing 101 and that one would be perfect.

by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 4, 2021 5:36 PM |
r76 He won some odd NBC contest/award for LBGT (although not sure if it was called that at the time) and when it was posted on some blog, there were lots of comments pointing out that he was in a long term relationship with some C list model/actress. Drew is/was friends with those comic/improv types who all seem to know each other and it more surprise that he had never mentioned being bi in his comedy routines - like others have mentioned, sex was almost completely absent from his work.
He ended that relationship with the girl not long after and he has never really commented on the matter until he started doing promo interviews, etc. for this show but even then he is very vague and seems still not very comfortable. He is the complete opposite to the SNL alum guy who wrote it with his fag hag...
I take him at his word but it seems kinda regressive in 2021 that am out bisexual actor starring in a show written by an out gay man about an out gay character stilt seems ashamed of his sexuality but people are people I guess...
by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 7, 2021 7:33 AM |

The show is exaggerating things that actually do happen and you/the audience weren't supposed to wonder where the information was coming from. It was supposed to be obvious to you.
The bit was that Brook was so self-centered that she couldn't even think of drivers as people.
Yes, celebs do ask people they hook up with to sign NDAs. (I've found they ask you before they sleep with you though.)
And yes, people who are about to screw a celeb will not only tell their friends during it but will tell them after as well.
And yes, people who aren't even non-celebs have a habit of texting, tweeting and calling people to tell them they're getting laid and to update them during their dates.

Did they ever adapt David Sedaris’ “Santaland Diaries” for the silver screen? Drew Tarver would be perfect in the role. He kind of looks like an elf too.

Episode 7 was just okay, but Episode 8 was genius. Love they actuallyshow tackled the gaybaiting culture that exists in the modern entertainment industry.
I know there are writers for this that come to this board, so kudos to you.

I thought Cary’s storyline in Ep 7 (trailing a professional at a hospital) was hilarious. It reminded me of the ‘Take your daughters to workday’ episode of Arrested Development 🤣
The gay baiting storyline in Ep 8 was okay - great concept but I didn’t have any laugh out loud moments. But that actor who played the straight actor was Rolf in the live production of The Sound of Music several years ago! His ass was the only saving grace of that musical.

It's funny because I always thought Michael Campayno was gay.

Clever writing is better than broad jokes to me r124.
Their satire of the gay baiting aspect of culture was spot on. Including making fun of the gay men who eat up ambiguous straight guys while going "ew' over openly gay guys.

That gaybaiting episode could've been one great psycho thriller movie. Love the scene at the fountain where Damien sets Cary straight why Cary picked him.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | September 17, 2021 9:16 PM |
Ooops, the character name's Dean, not Damien.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 17, 2021 9:50 PM |
It's true. Gay media and orgs ignore gay men but a straight guy posts a thirst trap and it's front page news.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 17, 2021 10:25 PM |
It's more about clickbait. Some Gays rather support a hot straight gay teaser than an out and proud gay talent. It's all about still needing that validation from straight people.

What is wrong with Drew Tarver's face?
It starts looking really bloated and frozen around episode 6.

Josh Segarra is so sexy.

I actually think Helene Yorke is a better comic actor than Deb Messing -- with Deb, you can always see the effort being made.
Helene reminds me of Becki Newton from "Ugly Betty."

Helene is really good and is getting even better as the show goes on.

Does anyone know the sad closing credits song from the 4th episode, when Cary is about to take a lyft to meet his sister? I loved the song can't find it listed anywhere. Thanks.

Just finished S2 E8. I feel like I should be enjoying the eps more, but I'm not. Maybe the novelty from S1 wore off? It all seems rather blase at this point. Brooke is clueless and fucks everything up, Cary doesn't get laid, and Pat is overworked. Rinse and repeat.

I love this show. Helené is so good.
The part in the last episode wheee Cary was like, “You could just hit on all of the other gay people here” and the old queen was like “Ew!” made me laugh because I know so many gay men like that.

Except Cary is getting laid. I think the way the main characters are evolving is really interesting.
But Molly Shannon is weirdly under-used. They're not giving her much to do at all.

I agree, but this is a series that has two main characters r139. Everyone else is a supporting character.

I almost wonder if she was a bit busy filming other shows/movies this season.

I think they are building up to her character having a major meltdown by the end of the season. Similar to the airplane episode near me the end of season 1.

[quote]I almost wonder if she was a bit busy filming other shows/movies this season.
She said she had more time in the second season than the first so her role was expanded.
But I think the point is that the show focuses on "The Other Two."
In the first season, they rode their brother's coattails and they were "the other two." In the second season, they're riding their mom's and they're still "the other two."

Thanks, R140, in 40 years of TV watching, I've figured out the difference between main and supporting characters.
Some of the best comic supporting characters—Sue Ann and Phyllis on the MTM Show, Carla on Cheers, Bubbles and Mother on AbFab, etc.—had just blips of screen time in most episodes, but those few lines brought a lot of bang for their buck.
A talent like Molly Shannon's shouldn't be wasted, and they're writing for her like she's an extra.
The Pat talk show setup has so many possibilities for comedy. There should be a "you can lift that right out" moment every episode.

Loved the Aaron Shock reference in episode 9

The tag at the end that Cary is supposed to start filming on March 13th 2020 was my biggest laugh.
Happy HBO renewed this, I am guessing it doesn't get huge ratings and it's good they recognize it's quality and want to support it.
Also the poster who was complaining about underusing Molly Shannon, they finally let her act in the finale.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | September 25, 2021 5:58 PM |
Love this show. Beautifully written and acted. Genius comedy. Helena and Drew kill it every scene. I am even enjoying Molly Shannon.

This was so satisfying, I’m so happy that this and Sex Education both got so quickly renewed as some of the few shows with prominent gay characters. I’m a little muddle about how they are going to carry off the “other two” conceit next near, unless it kind of flips that Molly and Case are now in that position?
by Anonymous | reply 150 | September 28, 2021 8:58 AM |
The last joke in the season finale was that Cary's movie was scheduled to start shooting in March 2020.
The entire season happened before the pandemic.
Sounds like season 3 will begin with Night Nurse having derailed again and Cary back where he started.

R152 Wasn’t it a Tarantino reference since they were headed to Hollywood?

[quote]Can anyone explain the weird bare feet scene in the airplane?
I think it was a general comment on how increasingly disgusting airplane travelers are becoming.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | October 3, 2021 10:37 PM |
Right r154.
The characters were saying people in first class were classy, but the joke with them putting their bare feet up is everybody on the plane does whatever they want these days. Even people in first are no classier.

Holy shit. I just binged the entire series in 24 hours and it's easily one of my favorite shows ever. It's coming back in August!

I fell off my chair at the Aaron Schock joke. My boyfriend had no idea who he was, which gives you an idea how silo-ed my DL-ing is.
