by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 21, 2021 9:03 PM |
While of course do affect NYC, hurricanes that mainly hit LI, Conn and New England generally aren't as intense. The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 leveled entire areas of LI, Conn and New England.
For a hurricane to majorly affect NYC eye of storm or good northern side of it would need to pass over New Jersey. This is because the northern side of a hurricane is usually always more dangerous, and takes into account the geography of NYC/NJ harbor.
Given nature of NYC/NJ harbor and coastline including how Long Island juts out any storm of decent intensity will funnel water up into North and East Rivers, along with various bays, etc....
Hurricane Sandy was just such an event and this explains why so much of Manhattan below about 34th or 23rd streets are flood zones for several blocks in from North or East rivers

History Channel did a great series on New England hurricane of 1938. Happily all eight parts are up on YT for those interested.
Watched years ago when it was first broadcast on television and just couldn't imagine what people would do today. East End of LI is far more built up than back in late 1930's, and even with modern early warning or whatever there still is only one major highway out of LI back into city, the Long Island Expressway.

If this storm blows away this constant damp and humid weather would be very happy.
Past week or so has been incredibly moist in NYC. Dewpoint temps between 65 and 72... Most uncomfortable...
Temps are usually in low 80's or even just 70's, but because is so humid no relief. Everyone has their air conditioners going 24/7 in effort to wring some of moisture out of indoor air. You walk past buildings and think it's raining but it is only all the water dripping or otherwise coming out of air conditioners.

Nothing really new nor unexpected. Subways and certain areas of city flood all the time when large amounts of rain fall within a short period of time. About a month ago it was storm Elsa that caused similiar issues.
FDR Drive, Gowanus Expressway and other roads or major highways in city are prone to flash flooding, this again just from moderate to heavy rainfall. As noted in post above large areas of lower Manhattan and elsewhere are and have been prone to flooding due to heavy rains for decades if not hundred or so years. Issue is now thanks to climate change or whatever you want to believe storms that drop huge amounts of water are becoming more frequent.
As for the subways in addition to being underground many of the tunnels must cope with water from long covered over bodies of water (creeks, brooks, ponds....).
Residents of Upper West Side who take the 8th Avenue subways can tell you there is a constant cascade of water coming down into tunnels from sources above. MTA built various things that carry and direct this water into drains. Many owners of row houses or large apartment buildings must cope with fact their building's foundations are built through or near enough under ground bodies of water.
Canal street is called just that because there once was a canal that ran from east to north rivers across lower Manhattan. It was long ago filled in/covered over to make a street.

R148- I went into the city last night and the FDR was totally flooding. It was a BIG mistake for me to go out at all. By 1 am parts of Manhattan had 4.7 inches of rain! I'm in Westchester too. When I got home about 1 am my rain meter showed less than a third of an inch- BIZARRE.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | August 22, 2021 2:33 PM |
[R92]- You forgot to mention that the spring- April and May in NYC are BEAUTIFUL
No, they really aren't r135. Spring in the Carolinas starts slowly in March and builds warmly to beautiful Aprils and Mays. There's no real Spring in New York. At some point in late May it goes from chilly and damp to hot and humid. New York is at its best in September and October. Sometimes the sky is so blue those day.

It has been downgraded to a tropical storm and is passing well to the east of Montauk at the eastern end of LI. Lots of winds and rain and flooding but we've been dealing with that all summer. Local news have obviously spent a lot on this and are still reporting as if this is a big event. It's not. It's a nothingburger.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | August 22, 2021 3:07 PM |
R153- I agree. I live just north of NYC. We had that storm in July I put my rain meter out before that storm. The next morning it showed 5.2 inches of rain. This storm won't give us much more than that.

Local news stations here in the city keep interrupting their programming for special updates from Gov. Cuomo, as if he and the storm are still relevant. What an ego.

Hurricane Sandy was 4 times wider. Henri is a much more concentrated storm.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | August 22, 2021 5:52 PM |
Lots of people here miss understand how Tropical storms work. The rain and winds are not constant with the exception of the outer eye walls, the rain and wind gusts come in waves as the storms bands sweep over which is why you may see it start and stop raining or gusts of wind that come and go. It in no way means it’s over.
It’s important to understand how storms work and not let your guard down. If you go out thinking the storm is over or not that strong you risk getting caught in a bad band of weather and that’s not fair to first responders who have to risk their lives to come rescue you.
The closer to the eye the more you feel the storms impact. Don’t venture out until this is over.

Well, these replies aged well. As I said at R79 and R80, these storms are almost never as scary as they’re hyped to be, and NYC was never in any real danger. It’s a regular boring, rainy Sunday afternoon here now. I was even able to get my dog out for a walk (and he hates rain), it’s so mild.

This, now, is NOTHING. Nothing is leaking anymore. It’s literally a gentle rain outside, and it will continue through at least early tomorrow afternoon.

So far in Manhattan Sunday has just been a dreary, cloudy, wet, cool and damp day. Rain is off and on, sometimes heavy, others light..
Turned off AC because it was just hopeless. It's 70F outside which is rather cool, but humidity is around 93%. In order to get any use out of AC had to turn thermostat down to 70F which made the place feel cold and clammy.
by Anonymous | reply 223 | August 23, 2021 1:39 AM |
R223 umm what temp do you normally keep the AC?
by Anonymous | reply 224 | August 23, 2021 1:46 AM |
Either 74F or maybe 73F, but that isn't entire story.
Air conditioners will attempt to keep about a twenty degree difference between indoor and outdoor air (varies by thermostat setting). When outdoor temps start dropping into low 70's and certainly going down to 60's it becomes very difficult for AC's condenser coils to work. Many makers will state in owners manual the lowest outdoor temp one is supposed to use said AC.
Some window or whole house air conditioners have built in dehumidifier systems. Instead of using the condenser to cool air and wring moisture out, a heating system comes on and dries out air instead. Some heating pump systems can work this way as well.
by Anonymous | reply 225 | August 23, 2021 1:55 AM |
the hurricane watch system updates their warnings. If you live in a Hurricane Zone, you should listen to these warnings. It allows for people to prepare and be forewarned. It's a great thing to monitor hurricanes with accurate measurements.

[quote] It was interesting how long it swirled over NYC and Long Island on the radar. If it had been the size of Sandy, it would have been catastrophic. Y'all dodged a bullet.
Yeah, every now and then we get those storm systems that swirl over NYC for a few days. It rains… for several days. Pretty sure it happens countrywide—worldwide, even—during warm rainy weather seasons.

We should not be complaining. We've had a HUGE amount of rain in July and August in the NYC metropolitan area while the West is not only burning up but is experiencing a SEVERE drought, even Minnesota is dealing with wildfires and severe drought.

Nah, R266. Most of the West should burn. I mean that literally. But real estate developers keep burning in fire zones. The problem in the West is not the fires. The problem is the huge number of people who moved into fire zones and refuse to leave.
In a pissing match with Mother Nature, she wins. She always wins.

Really?
Oh, no!
You know what happens when there’s a drought. Let me just put it this way, everyone remains dry.
