He gave an interview 30 years ago, after "For the Boys" bombed; said he tried to convince director Mark Rydell that the movie wasn't for "the fuckin' fruits in the bathhouse," aka a Bette Midler musical.
Funny thing about "For the Boys" is people like it now. Its rating on IMDb is 8/10.

I recently saw "The Gambler", a movie of his from the seventies. He gave a good performance and was also very fine eye candy.
I read a Playboy interview he did a long time ago and I remember thinking what a dope he was. He said something along the lines of "women should stay at home, at least until the kids are grown." I always thought he was a good actor, a great looking guy, but very dumb.

[quote]he had a nervous breakdown at the height of his career
More like a coke breakdown. He was a drug addict and had a hard time functioning. Bad movies, then partial hiatus.
James Caan is a blue collar Jewish guy from Queens, and totally straight. He's "old fashioned," though married five or six times. A Republican and a Trump lover. Not someone I'd like to spend time with. Caan's 80-82 now and looks it. (His birthdate was once listed as1939, then 1940).
I agree with R23. I've liked many of his performances, The Gambler is one of them. He was excellent in Cinderella Liberty with Marsha Mason, and Thief (1981) directed by Michael Mann. He was very good in a pre-Godfather role with Candice Bergen called TR Baskin. Check out Slither (1973), a quirky Howard Zieff comedy co-starring Sally Kellerman and Peter Boyle.

He's a NYC stage actor from the 50's and Before he hit it big with the godfather, he was a studio star, very old hollywood hearthrob, He was divine in his 60's / early 70's movies, THE RAIN PEOPLE, GAMES, a few war movie, the one with Wayne, And RABBIT RUN. also that famous TV movie, Brian's song. He became hotter than the sun in the 70's. FREEBIE AN THE BEAN is hilarious. he was great in ROLLERBALL, FUNNY LADY, very sexy in harry and walter go to New-York. He directed a very good movie, in which he was excellent HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT. there is no way in hell he is straight R24.

Puleeeze, R25, do not direct anyone for any reason to Harry and Walter Go to New York. It's sooo bad, a bomb, and Caan gave it a zero rating.
[quote]He said something along the lines of "women should stay at home, at least until the kids are grown."
R23, the Playboy interview was done when 'Women's Lib' was a very hot topic in the 1970s, and asking a celebrity about it was perfunctory. Most men - celebrities and non-celebrities - were against it. "Not my wife!' was typical. My own father was obsessed with women wearing *gasp* pants. Celeb women were non-committal, they usually said "I was always liberated," or "It's okay if they stay feminine," or dumb crap like that. So Caan's 1970s Playboy response was par for the course.

That being said, Caan does have quite the bitchy streak. I remember he was asked about Bette Midler, and he said flat out that she was "very stupid", adding that it was "nothing personal, I like her. But I like my dog, too."

James Caan was completely miscast in For the Boys and the whole movie crashes because of it. I have no idea what Bette was even thinking of with that decision. George Segal, who was in a supporting role, would have been a much better choice.
Caan only started ripping apart the movie after it was opened and the critics almost universally panned his performance while Bette went on to get nominated for the oscar. This was also the second year in a row that he was in a movie where the leading lady outshined him and got accolades. Though he supposedly was great to Kathy Bates on Misery.
Bette got her revenge on Larry King where she said he could have been better.

[quote]ames Caan was completely miscast in For the Boys and the whole movie crashes because of it. I have no idea what Bette was even thinking of with that decision.
It's because he was good in Funny Lady with Streisand 16 years prior. The real question is WHY Caan would take such a ridiculous role.

James Caan was a huge star in the 1970s. In the Rhoda MTM spin-off series, they make comments about how "Joe" looked like him. David Groh looked like James Caan, not the other way around.

There was a rumor that went around in two versions. In one, the guy was underaged Scott's boyfriend and James caught them together. In the other he was a rentboy James had hired. Both versions were word of mouth and end with James throwing him out the window or accidentally pushing him out. James managed to make sure the rumors never got printed and the net was in its infancy so the stories couldn't spread that way.

I was bartending a small movie folks gathering at a studio boss's apartment here in NYC around 2004 and the first guest to arrive was James Caan (looking good). He walked over to the bar we set up and said, "Uhm, you got like an Appletini?"
I smiled and said "Sorry!", but in my head I thought, "No, James Caan, this is a catered event, we don't have that green shit for an Appletini!" It struck me as not a very "on brand" drink for tough guy James Caan! Ed Asner had three scotch & sodas and got very tipsy and loud. Everyone kind of rolled their eyes.

R52 the linked article says the apartment was owned by a mutual friend, that they were both in the apartment for a “short time” earlier in the evening, and that the guy came back later, took the elevator up, knocked and then climbed out a window when Cann didn’t answer. I don’t see how this could be about anything other than sex, drugs or both.

by Anonymous | reply 78 | August 20, 2021 10:55 PM |
When Rob told his dad he was gay he rent his garments and said the Kadish - he told Rob he no longer had a son and they didn't speak for a year. His mom acted as a single parent to him. His dad completely changed and accepted him and me. In those days we couldn't get married. Rob's dad had thrown huge weddings for his sisters so they gave us a huge down payment on our house in Austin in place of a wedding in 1991. This was a bargain compared to the cost of a Beverly Hills Jewish wedding. One sister was a producer on many Tony Thomas-produced shows like Golden Girls and the other sold properties to stars. Rob used to watch Golden Girls being shot for TV. Tony was the son of Danny Thomas and brother of Marlo. He is still alive.

One sister's wedding was at the Four Seasons in Maui. Rob's dad flew the entire family, friends and the wedding party there and they stayed in the hotel. I think it was where the White Lotus was filmed. His dad and the family would holiday in Hawaii every year and also in Mexico. They had a house in Palm Springs, too. Rob's dad was a golf nut and the house in Palm Springs was for golf. They were members of the famous golf club there. They used to go to Las Vegas for the shows and that's where they met the Rat pack guys who were friends of his mom and dad.

by Anonymous | reply 82 | August 20, 2021 11:40 PM |
Yes, we got married in Texas in 2015 as soon as we could. His father didn't want to die and hung on for a long time. He died before his wife. Rob took care of his mom during the last six months of her life which was almost unbearable. They sold the Beverly Hills house bought a huge condo in that building where Elton John lived. It had incredible services and was real luxury. She died at home. Yes, Rob is still in contact with some of his old friends from Beverly Hills High School and they visit when they are in Austin.

R83 So glad to hear that you guys made it legal after being together after all these years.🥰 Can I ask what made you and your partner choose to live in Austin over Beverly Hills?
As for Scott, what do you think made him “revert” and decide to have a baby with a woman/have a girlfriend years later? Do you think his dad never really accepted him and he felt the need to try to please his dad so he quit being his authentic self? It’s just so strange.

It took me 15 years to accept the heat, once I gave up I found peace with it. Austin was wonderful in 1991. Rob never knew Scott personally so I can't tell you anymore than what I posted. I will post one more I have posted before. In 1991 Rob and I were invited to William Shatner's birthday party. One of Rob's best friends was his daughter. We were warned not to ask anything about Star Trek and to only talk to him if he talked to us first - which was funny because it was mostly a family event. There was a couple there who worked at Disneyland as Snow White and some other Bear character. Anyway they had been warned too. We ended up sitting at their table for dinner. We all got drunk. They kept joking with lines like "Beam me up Scotty" and they kept asking us Star Trek trivia questions that he must have heard. They spoke in Snow Whites's and a bear's voices. We laughed alot The next day Shatner complained to his daughter about how rude we were and never spoke to him, he asked if we knew who he was.

I never found James Caan attractive. I was glad Don Barzini ordered the hit on Sonny.

James Caan was attractive, but an ugly fug.

Has anybody posted that full frontal nude shot of James Caan from the early 70s.
I have it in a book - he is gorgeous. Big meat and I bet he gives a mean long fuck.

This is as close as you're going to get as far as a "nude" pose of James Caan

I had to Google this story because R2's LA Times story was paywalled. There's surprisingly very little coverage of the details on this, not even a pic of Mark Schwartz, the young man who died. Schwartz was an actor so you would think there would be some pics of him.

[quote] James Caan was also very good (and sexy) in Howard Hawks' El Dorado.
I LOVE El Dorado and he was delicious in that role.

R120 - I was just going to say, "what about the guy who died?" Didn't he have a life and a family? Was he just erased?

In that crappy movie with Streisand (which Caan loves, btw), Caan's character says "who's the pansy?" about Roddy McDowell's character.
That about sums Caan up.

But he did say the same kinda phobic comment in this interview in, of all things, Cigar Aficiando about being thought of “gay - as that awful” - though the editor seems to raise an eyebrow about “an odd death involving a young actor named Marc Schwartz. This article in Buffalo News says Schwartz was actually an acquaintance and that they’d met the day before in the apartment.

So, both he and his son --famous actors who were smoking hot in their prime--are gay? GOTCHA
