Have you ever been to northern Italy ? What did you think of the people there ?

My Italian family members say that americans know nothing about italy because the "Italians" in the US are not real italians, but Sicilians, and that they are low class trash monkeys who shouldn't even be considered italians. They say that italy is a refined country with a sophisticated culture, that Northern Italy is the real thing, that Italians are tall, elegant, many with blond hair and clear eyes, and that american italians are to italy what puerto ricains are to the USA...I think they have a point.

In Northern Italy all seems to breathe freedom and peace and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.

I've seen some things that a woman ain't s'posed to see.

I've been to paradise

But not to Italy

by Anonymousreply 2August 10, 2021 12:51 AM

Growing up in New York and learning Italian from my friends, had no idea they didn't speak correct Italian. Their families were from Southern Italy, so I learned their dialect, dropping vowels at end of words like Prosciutto and Calamari and words not used anywhere else in Italy.

If you haven’t been to northern and southern Italy many times, it would be really hard to explain the different cultures that exist in both places.

It sounds like you have a lot of secondhand information, though, to help you create an opinion.

by Anonymousreply 5August 10, 2021 12:54 AM

While you have some race baiting, troll like language in your post (granted, this is DL), I can say, as someone who is friends with a lot of Italians, and who has been to most regions in Italy, there is some truth to what you say. There is more refinement and art in the North, and that is where all of the wealth is concentrated. Remember, like many European countries, Italy was a collection of Kingdoms and became a nation state in like 1861 and then a united country in the mid 1900s. San Marino is still an entirely separate country inside Italy.

The people of the north are more fair, as you said, often taller with many having lighter eyes and hair. It also seems they don't pudge out as much as those in the south, though generally Italians don't get nearly as fat as most Americans, including Italian Americans, as their portions are small and they walk everywhere. And even though many drink wine, their pours are small.

by Anonymousreply 6August 10, 2021 12:55 AM

[quote] Their families were from Southern Italy

That's another sin according to my italian family. Everything south of Napoli should be a separate country according to them. They see it as a shithole full of beggars who benefit shamelessly from the north

I've heard this a lot.

And you know what? It's thinly veiled racism.

Northern Italy is whiter and richer, because they have more Northern European traits.

Meanwhile, Southern Italians are poor, uneducated trash because they have inter-mingled with North Africans and Middle Easterners.

It's all a bunch of idiocy to me, and just another story of one group of people trying to make themselves out to be better than another group of people.

And you know the irony here?

Southern Italians who populate much of the United States are now acting all high-and-mighty, looking down on blacks and hispanics, thinking they're sooooo much better.

I swear to god, human beings are fucking exhausting.

Everyone is always trying to be "better than" someone else.

R10 You've never been to Italy. You know little about the country.

by Anonymousreply 12August 10, 2021 1:06 AM

I know enough to never want to visit there, R12.

If Italians are this petty and hateful, then trust and believe it's not a place I would EVER want to visit.

I like countries with nice, civilized people who are polite, courteous, and gracious.

Italians sound like UPPITTY PIGS.

And let's be honest. The entire country is nothing to write home about.

So people love pasta. Big fucking deal. That's their main contribution to the world.

Apart from that, they're not a rich country, and the people are obnoxious.

THERE. I said it.

by Anonymousreply 14August 10, 2021 1:10 AM

There are plenty of blue eyed blonds in Sicily because of the French. Naples on the other hand....

Sicily was pillaged and oppressed by the Carthaginians, Greeks, Arabs, French and then for a very, very long time the Spanish. It’s a messed up culture in the way lots of countries with histories of brutal colonization are messed up. But it isn’t it’s own country and there’s the rub.

The people in Northern are open and kind. In Sicily people were stand-offish until they knew who my people were and that my roots were there.

by Anonymousreply 15August 10, 2021 1:11 AM

I prefer southern Italy. Sicily is beautiful, as are the Aeolian Islands (Stromboli, Vulcano, etc.). I like the Naples region (Campania) because I am fascinated with Vesuvius, Pompeii, Capri, etc. I love the novel and film Christ Stopped at Eboli, and I visited the novel/filming locations in Basilicata. Southern Italy has a nice climate and great food.

by Anonymousreply 20August 10, 2021 1:25 AM

I summered in Liguria for a decades. It's very pleasant, quite relaxed, and not overrun with tourists. The sea resort towns are middle class and relaxing. Alassio has a sandy beach. The people are Italian of course, but share the temperament of Turin and Milan and the Alps, so its that sensible lifestyle that also exists in Switzerland and Austria. As soon as you drive past Monaco it's gone and the French and Spanish coasts are so much more animated, diverse, tacky, vulgar, high and low in wealth, and over run with tourists from everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 21August 10, 2021 1:26 AM

OP, you come from a very classy family. We should all aspire to their high standards.

by Anonymousreply 23August 10, 2021 1:31 AM

Greeks use the same North/South argument. It's unoriginal and most often spouted by simpletons who think they're making a profound and original statement. ANY country's history is far more complex and diverse than that. I agree with commenter who called it veiled racism. Although it's not terribly veiled.

by Anonymousreply 24August 10, 2021 1:32 AM

[quote]I summered in Liguria for a decades.

I visited Sicily years ago. I found it to be a gorgeous and fascinating country. Stunning Mediterranean scenery and architecture. As r15 says, the population is a fairly diverse mix physically. The only thing I didn't enjoy was getting the worst sunburn I had ever experienced.

Threads like this trashing southern Italy and Italians periodically pop up here. Like a thread a few months back about a psychotic lily white irish American man terrorising his black neighbor in Long Island that devolved into multiple posters raving about how horrible Italians were because they were not " real whites". What it comes down to is they are usually darker complected so it's a way for racist posters to get out their aggression towards "ethnics" without opening the can of worms ( or banning) that going after people officially deemed POC will. Going after Latin or black people will quickly get a thread FFd ( as it should be) , trashing Italians or Greeks or Armenians will allow for about 400 posts of ranting.

by Anonymousreply 31August 10, 2021 1:40 AM

R28 I did. the Visconti were the dukes of milan, which is a dukedom, and immensely wealthy. Luchino Visconti nurtured his love of opera in the opera house that was in his family's main castle in Milan. Many of his films were filmed in the family houses (castles), not movie sets, notably the ball sequance in "the leopard", that was the real ballroom of one of his houses

by Anonymousreply 32August 10, 2021 1:43 AM

Aristocratic. Noble. I still don't think the Visconti ever had royal status.

by Anonymousreply 33August 10, 2021 1:46 AM

Visconti's family was nobility not royalty.

by Anonymousreply 34August 10, 2021 1:47 AM

OP, I just returned from Northern Italy, precisely the region known as Trentino Alto-Adige, otherwise known as the South Tyrols. The gorgeous Dolomiti mountains are located there. Trentino is where the Catholic Church signed many of their doctrinal proclamations. Trentino has a beautiful castle, which is adorned with frescoes and paintings inside. A must see.

The people in this region are hospitable and most speak some English. The closer you get to Austria, the more the Italians resemble Austrians in language and culture (they speak German and eat strudel and schnitzel). And you can find some blond Italian twinks, too!

Pictured below is Seceda, part of the Dolomites.

What your family says resonates with me. I'm Sicilian-Italian, and almost all the Italian peninsula's people that I've seen when I visited had more of that northern and central European (almost Nordic) look. Then in Sicily, they were more uniformly darker, shorter and stockier, more resembling the Italian folks of immigrants around the Northeast where I grew up.

On the peninsula and especially in the north of Italy, when asked about my Italian background, if I mentioned I was Sicilian, I was told, "No, you're not Italian--you're Sicilian!" And then when in Sicily I told them what the northerners told me, I was rebuked, "Hell no, you are a full-blooded Italian!" lol Couldn't win. Shall we say, the Boot of the Italian peninsula definitely does seem to assert its imagined position above the Stone of the island of Sicily under its heel. ;)

by Anonymousreply 82August 10, 2021 2:44 AM

Prejudice, snobbery, and racism influences northern Italian attitudes towards southern Italians. Yes, much emigration from Italy was from around Naples and Sicily, but not all. My forebears came from Genoa.

All of Italy was overrun over the centuries by Germanic groups, Greeks, Slavs, Arabs, and north Africans.

Let's not forget when northern Italians look down their Lombard noses on their southern cousins, that fascism originated in the north!

Very stern with flashes of warmth, but a great teacher nonetheless. Her mother was an unreconstructed fascist. I lived in the North End (Boston) at the time and was used to darker, shorter, "meaner" Italian-Americans who spoke in dialects I could barely understand, and most were Neapolitan or Sicilian heritage.

The Italian thing on DL is one of the most bizarre things. We never see threads on the French or Germans, who also run the gamut from fair to dark, but DL is obsessed with Italians not being "white," which of course they are. Calling dark French or Germans "white-adjacent" would be absolutely ridiculous, but somehow the question always comes up with Italians. Very odd.

by Anonymousreply 120August 10, 2021 3:10 AM

I'll trick with a southern Italian, but I'll only marry one from the North.

Even a WHORE has her standards.

by Anonymousreply 121August 10, 2021 3:13 AM

OP - Curious, if you happen to be on a date with an Italian-American, do you ask your date where their family originated from? If they happen to be from the south do you cancel the date? Do you only date exclusively blonde, blue-eyed guys? And you probably voted Democrat. (A lot of white gay men exclude POC's so it will not be a surprise to me if your preference is exclusively white men).

Your family, OP, are obviously racists (go ahead and block me) and also don't know the difference between "clear" and "light."

FTR I'd take a smoldering southern Italian over the okay-looking northerners posted here. R120, the puzzlement over Italians goes all the way back to the decades around 1900 in the US, when racist, nativist white people had trouble accepting Italian immigrants (and Greeks, Jews, Hungarians, etc.) as "white." Sicilians were even lynched in the south.

This old saw has been disproven with DNA testing. Do any DLers read anything about DNA? Italians are all the same basic ethnic stock, with some admixtures, but the admixtures are not heavily prevalent. Northern Italians are not Germans and Southern Italians are not Arabs, that is completely false.

What I understood clearly, though, was that the Napolitano side was loving, generous and valued family relationships while the Northern side was secretive, stingy, and gossipy. So I knew where I wanted to belong. I am old now and the Northerners have died off or lost touch, while the Southerners remain close, and embrace extended family. I truly love my aunts, uncles, and cousins on the Southern side. The one thing both sides had in common was, they didn’t like Sicilians.

The North/South divide is a two-fold issue whether in Italy, Spain or France. The Muslim conquest of Spain and southern Italy continued for centuries, leaving its influence on culture and cuisine which continues to this day. Visit Palermo or Agrigento and you could just as well be in Tunis or Algiers.

The other major influence is, of course, the foisting together of separate, distinct cultures which had and have no desire to live together. As mentioned upthread, Italy, Spain and France were divided into regions, each with its own unique language and culture. Power junkies/unifiers such as Garibaldi, Phillipe II and Isabella/Ferdinand/the Hapsburgs made the colossal mistake of believing that people with absolutely no linguistic or cultural connection could live together happily. And then compounded the outrageous mistake by destroying the local language/culture and imposing a foreign one in its place. Therefore, it's no coincidence that Sicilians or Catalans or Bretons continue to cling fiercely and proudly to their local languages (dialects) and cultural distinctions and continue to despise and want nothing to do with the foreign elements imposed on them.

You can tell the difference between the North and the South easily. I love love love Italy. It is so incredibly beautiful and the men are hot, the women stylish. But snobs and rude . Seriously tourists are so hated in Venice, but it is so beautiful that the people could be spitting on you and you would still think” omg this rain is beautiful “.

Naples is chaotic. It is the only place in Europe I thought I understood the desperate need to leave and go elsewhere and yet the people are lovely and warm. I love Pompeii, , amazing and the museum in Naples has to be seen to be believed. So good.

We have been discussing Race , but I also think a lot of what we discuss as Race is mixed up in Class. Darker people seem to be sometimes associated with the lower classes. The Darker you are, the more you are seen to have a lower Class. Look at Class in England or Italy or even India. It is not just to do with Colonial world, it is something some people judge on . I find men of both the South and North hot.

He had flawless skin, gorgeous sad puppy dog eyes, and thick silky straight hair. The "hairy little monkey" refrain is comical as well, because I find nothing sexier than dark haired hairy blokes myself.

So very many ugly posters on this thread. This thread is sad as well; It should burn in the cyberspace equivalent of a grease fire. Muriel, do you have any Grappa and a lighter?

Some southern Italians don't like to hear this, but the farther south you get in Italy and in all of Sicily there is a definitely genetic mixture from people from northern Africa, specially Tunisia and Liberia. You also have a definite mixture of Greek blood with southern Italy and Sicily.

It's funny. I'm a pale skinned redhead and I speak Italian because I taught myself. Whenever I meet Italians they ask me, completely naturally: "So, what part of Italy are you/your family from?"

Non-italians in my country scoff at the idea that anyone could mistake me for an Italian, because in their minds, all Italians are dark and swarthy and that's all they can be.

Similarly, I've been asked a number of times if I'm Spanish, by Spanish people.

I've been from the Dolomites to Lecce; from Lake Maggiore to Trieste; from San Remo to the Amalfi Coast; major and minor cities in between. But, Sicilian-American though I am, never to Sicily.

What I believe one notices most about mainland Italians is the beauty, the stylishness, the happiness, the expressiveness, the love of life.

What I have observed and experienced in my family and Northern Jersey milieu is the love of family, the respect for hard work, faith, patriotism, and the sharing of food as one of life's greatest gifts and pleasures.

Mock as you wish.

Sicily, having been a kingdom conquered by disparate cultures, of course would have a hybrid language, customs, recipes, etc.

Much like the United Kingdom and the English language.

Who cares if there are blond Italians with light eyes. A friend's late grandfather was actually from Sicily, he was a very handsome tall man, he had natural blond hair and blue eyes. Explain that man being 100% Sicilian, but not looking typical of that region. Obviously, not all Italians and Sicilians have dark coloring or resemble Tony Soprano.

There are also natural redheads from Italy and Sicily. Same with Pakistan, lots of natural redheads there too. People need geography and history lessons!

by Anonymousreply 194August 10, 2021 11:16 AM

The funny thing is that, for many centuries, Southern Italy was far richer, not to mention more cultured and refined, than Northern Italy. The stability afforded by the Spanish to the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily, as well as the "shield" of the Papal States, guaranteed that the economic development of the region would be much greater than the North, which had been under war throughout the Middle Ages and had serious problems during the Habsburg-Valois wars between 1494 to 1559. Also, the South had more direct access to the Mediterranean trade and enjoyed much more political prominence as a consequence.

After the Unification between 1860/61 by I Mille under Garibaldi, and the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy (which was only achieved through massive bribery and with the support of the Neapolitan camorristi, who were promised control over most of the South in exchange for their help), all industry was dismantled and the Banco delle Due Sicilie was broken up and bled dry for 65 years to finance the unstable Italian state, in what amounts to a massive transfer of wealth and resources from the South to the North, which was firmly controlled by the Savoy family.

So yes, Southern Italy's poverty is very much a consequence of deliberate, carefully escalated deconstruction and not a matter of incompetence at all.

Finally, I would like to clarify that the LANGUAGES that are spoken all over Italy are not dialects of Italian, which was created taking the Tuscan language as a primary model. They are languages in their own right, with their own grammar, verbal conjugation model, unique vocabulary and literary tradition. Moreover, the people who "drop" the last vowel of male-gendered words are not Sicilian, but Neapolitan (this is a feature exclusive to the Neapolitan language), as the Sicilian language is very different... By the way, here's an interesting fact: during the Kingdom of Italy's first years, there was an intense debate regarding which language should be used as a model for the unifying language that all Italians would speak, with some people preferring Tuscan and just as many others, favouring Sicilian (these were the two languages with the strongest and oldest literary legacies). Finally, Tuscan won the debate, but it could have gone the other way just as easily.

Another interesting fact is that Italy is one of the very few countries in which the language spoken in the capital (romanesco), is neither the official, nor the most prestigious one - to the point when the romanesque language has practically disappeared, and been entirely dialectalized into Italian.

by Anonymousreply 195August 10, 2021 11:19 AM

It's like saying the only thing Spain gave to the world is paella, and forgetting about Velasquez, Cervantes, flamenco, and all those Spanish composers.

Yeah, and England boils down to afternoon tea (forget all those writers, poets, universities founded in the 13th centuries, etc.) and Russia to borscht (oh, never mind Tolstoy and Gorky and Chekov and neoclassical ballet and all THOSE composers).

What the fuck possessed you to ruin what began as a half-decent argument with so massively moronic a statement?!

You're clearly just a bigoted racist, and worse, a nyet kulturny philistine.

[quote]Oh boy. When even Caucasians can be turned into another “race” for the sake of pushing an SJW agenda. The future is not good.

As other posters have noted, the US has a long history of "Caucasians" drawing racial lines between different European groups; during the mass European immigrations of the 19th and early 20th centuries it was a matter of doubt to nativists whether Italians, Jews, and others—even the Irish—should be classified as the same race as English, Dutch, and other northern European (subtext: Protestant) people. And no, it wasn't "SJW's" doing this.

R181, and the English say: "the wogs start at Calais."

Thanks R195, for your clarifications. I'd say that there was never much chance that the language of Dante wouldn't end up the basis for the national language. Some people on this thread are acting like southern Italian varieties are divergences from a northern norm, but the northern varieties (e.g. Friulian) diverge even more from the standard (Tuscan) language—as far as I can tell, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 210August 10, 2021 1:38 PM

I've never been to Spain, or Greece but I don't think of Spaniards, Greeks and southern italians as white. They're more like asians to me (as in middle east) which I find very attractive, whereas the Italians of the north are definitely white. I have cousins who are very blonde, with blue or green eyes, pale skin and lanky, that's why I say they might have a point. Nothing "racist" about that

For years my family said we were “northern Italian”. We have dark hair and olive skin. I finally met someone in adulthood who thought I was Greek. I always wished I was British or something not what I was. Finally a family member did that online tracing and second hand I got the info: my Great Grandparents were from the north but were run out to the south so that’s where they began to breed their 11 (Duggar’s) kids and then they came to NY. 8 kids survived. They were not white northern Italian looking. My great grandfather had blue eyes but that’s the last of those traits. I have a penchant for taking what I want, being nasty and cruel when needed and sneaky to achieve my own goals. I’m definitely southern Naples type Italian. This new dangled be any gender and no stereotypes is a load of bad jizz! We have ancestral traits and stereotypes have bases. Blacks are loud in movie theatres, Asians are quiet and almost alien like in their demeanor, White Anglo American college boys are usually date rapist drunks who like to use inflict humiliation on their frat brothers by using their cocks (repressed homosexuality) and the list goes on. As for gender you’re either male or female. My friend born male but 1000% female, she finally transitioned the outside to match her fabulous inside is furious as are many of her trans community friends as to why they’ve spent their lives in the wrong “house” to finally be able to be the correct gender and now some drug addled former Disney douche with major mental issues (she clearly doesn’t take care of ) is screaming she’s “non gendered” FUCK OFF TO HELL DUMMY LOVATO she’s a fat girl who has a gorgeous voice , fucked up childhood and mental issues. She’s not into vagina, she’s not feeling the need to live her authentic male self she is an attention seeker under the guide of Scooter Braun (another thread on this cunt) She will overdose again , she does like cock and she wishes she had Selena’s body, Taylor’s class and respect and Miley’s confidence. Oh and she was definitely sexually abused as a kid. Her mother is a hoe. Sister morbidly obese , there’s many signs of childhood abuse.

OP is the same fucking racist bigot who has an obsession with southern Europeans.

I keep asking him to tell me what Queen Letizia of Spain looks like or Marcello Mastroianni but of course he never replies.

"white" is a ridiculous word. Stating that there is no Caucasoid DNA in Greeks, Italians, and Spaniards is an absurdity. You can find wide ranges of colours, hair and eye, heights, nose shapes, lips, etc., all over all those countries.

Here is a photograph of Francisco Rivera ("Paquirri")ne of Spain's most legendary bullfighters, gored to death in the ring at Pozoblanco some thirty years ago.

Here he is with his first wife, daughter of another legendary bullfighting family. Fucking look at them.

Yeah, Carmen Odonez was black and so was Paquirri. Right.

They were, by the way, two of the most stunningly beautiful people I have ever seen on a magazine cover (full disclosure: I have been reading HOLA for 30 years, too).

by Anonymousreply 219August 10, 2021 3:50 PM

I don't have time to read all this right now so maybe someone already said this. But I have something to say.

Part of the reason people have a problem with Italian Americans is because a lot of them are really racist towards blacks. I married into an Italian American family and I have said the words "white trash" and walked out of the room. I know not all Italian Americans are racist, but a lot of them are. There are a lot of blacks and a lot of Italians on the the East coast of the United States, and as a lot of you have mentioned upthread, people have a tendency to want to feel superior to other groups. There are a lot of great things about Italians, but because they do tend to be racist, sometimes others might want to knock them down a peg. Like, "you think you're better than others but you're the trash of your original country."

by Anonymousreply 220August 10, 2021 4:41 PM

R220 Oh please. The US is filled with all white enclaves, towns, neighborhoods, summer resorts and gated communities that keep out blacks....no matter how "liberal" they say they are.

Italians are really one of the few white ethnic groups that stayed in city neighborhoods. Other whites ran for the hills after the 1964 civil rights act.

ALSO: Italians-Americans weren't slave owners. Didn't create Jim Crow laws and red lining.

I forgot to say why I got so mad and said the white trash thing. They were sitting around on Christmas Eve and trashing our Senator, Cory Booker. Booker is one of the most decent, smart, fabulous people in the world. I don't know what they were even saying because it's hard to find a reason to trash him. I think maybe they were saying he didn't do a great job in Newark.

I never used to use the white trash term, because I thought it was racist. Sort of assuming everybody else is trash, but only some whites. I don't know. Then I learned the mean power of the term, because so many whites are afraid of being called trash.

by Anonymousreply 233August 10, 2021 9:50 PM

Exactly R233 there is only one human race on earth. What we're discussing here, or trying to discuss, is the validity of lumping together ethnic groups who don't share anything of significance, not even a language , into one country, Have the poorest, dumbest trash emigrate en masse to Turtle Island, and then see the americans refer to this sub group as "italians", whereas real italians couldn't be more different. When I see "italians" in an american movie, it makes me sick. The godfather makes me sick. I have memories of visiting my family as a teenager in Firenze, Roma, Peruggia. The elegance, the refinement, the exquisite altezza of this thousand year-old culture is completely lost to the americans. It's humiliating and unfair.

by Anonymousreply 234August 10, 2021 10:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 235August 10, 2021 10:25 PM

How would you feel? and then you, R236, try to explain that, even though they are technically "americans", they are not representative of all americans, and are not even really the same people as you, and everyone in Europe jumps at your throat, calling you racist and white supremacist and fascist. Again, how would you feel ?

I'm currently in northern Italy in the Piemonte area. I've been galavanting around the Ligurian coast for the past few weeks, from Nice to Portofino.

I won't bother with vile race or appearance comments. But I can speak to the northern atmosphere. I've only been as far south in Italy as Herculaneum, but I'll echo what someone above said — people here tend to respect the "work" of the working class across social divides. This makes for communities that feel alive and interconnected, whether a small seasonal town or a large metro like Turin. I've found that the north seems to exhibit a confidence that is free from the vise of tourism or the international stereotype of Italian culture.

Last thing I'll say to all of Italy's credit: they have their COVID and vaccination house in order, unlike any other country in the world.

Well, yes you are saying southern Italians are "not nice," since above you call them "the poorest, dumbest trash" among other disparaging comments. As for them not being real Italians, what exactly does the Italian peninsula mean to you? If someone comes from anywhere on it, they're Italian. Historically, of course, northern Italy was only integrated politically with the rest of Italy and the south in the 40s BC. It had a major Gaulish admixture, whereas the south had a major Greek admixture from the Greek colonies there. Since then there have been other groups moving in, which may explain the differences in appearance that you seem obsessed by. But you might as well express these differences by saying (equally stupidly) that the northerners aren't "real Italians" because they obviously descend from Celtic and Germanic interlopers.

But at this point I think the combination of your show of obtuseness and bad punctuation reveals you to be a troll.

Northern Europeans (even Northern Italians) regard Southern Europeans as white.

The racial question only seems to arise when people from the US contribute to the debate.

by Anonymousreply 255August 11, 2021 1:41 AM

I remember his cock better than some of my subsequent boyfriends. Because his locker was above mine and he stood on the bench naked with his junk in my face for 3 years. I'm sure he did it on purpose. He was charming and loved to show off all his assets. He was my forbidden fruit. However, unless he takes a DNA, we’ll never know much much of each he inherited. He could be heavily Italian. Everyone is different. One sibling or family member could be more of an ethnicity than the other.

Again, there are dark and swarthy Europeans of many nationalities. Even German. The Welsh tend to have a high percentage of dark-colored people. What's with people here claiming the name "Italy" for northern Italy and not southern? The name was originally used for southern Italy long before it was used for the north. The ancient Greek colonies in the south were in Italy; the north was Cisalpine Gaul; just south of that was Etruria. Why do the northerners get to take that name away?

Anyway, when most people around the world think of "Italy" they think of the warm south, orange trees, etc. rather than of the risotto-eating Alps.

by Anonymousreply 328August 13, 2021 9:57 PM

What is your inane point, R327? That Italy doesn't include the former Kingdom of Sicily? The regions in the north weren't called "Italy" either back then—except as a geographical term, which applies equally well to the South.

My point is most people think of the italians as black , and the northern italians are actually white, so they should have distinct names, and since the south contribution = corruption and organised crime and later in the USA, vulgarity and mafia, they should leave the name "Italy " to the North ( Da Vinci, Dante, the renaissance , and so on and so forth) and assume a more realistic name

by Anonymousreply 372August 14, 2021 1:28 AM

I will try to explain how white Europeans group ethnicity.

Black people have Sub-Saharan African ethnicity (obviously excluding later white immigrants)

Arabs are from North Africa, Asia Minor and The Middle East.

People from the Indian Sub-Continent are Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Nepalese.

The Indigenous Australians are Aboriginal

The Indigenous New Zealand people are Maori.

Europeans are varying shades of white, after a few months in Greece I'm darker than most Italians despite my almost wholly Irish ancestry.

I spent a month in northern Italy. The Northern Italians look the same as white Anglo Saxon Americans. They did not come to US because why would they. Ir have dark hair and fair skin and people would ask me for directions. The Southern Italians came over to US for jobs.

I can't post a TikTok video on DL (a good thing), but you might enjoy matte_paoli26. He's a music student from Tuscany studying in New York. He's cute and so are his TikToks.

by Anonymousreply 433August 30, 2021 1:00 PM

R433 but is he white ?

Prince Carl Philip is not italian =not black

by Anonymousreply 438August 30, 2021 5:01 PM

Prince Carl Philip is Brazilian = totally black.

by Anonymousreply 439August 30, 2021 6:10 PM

R439, I didn't know that ! cool ! Black as an Italian, as they say

by Anonymousreply 440August 30, 2021 6:56 PM

Sounds like someone here would LOVE to be Italian...

by Anonymousreply 441August 30, 2021 7:02 PM

I AM italian R441 smartass. 3 italian grandparents

by Anonymousreply 442August 30, 2021 7:08 PM

Not surprising that Italians have disdain for Italian Americans who are generally kind of trashy. I've worked with Africans who don't have a lot of respect for African Americans.

by Anonymousreply 443August 30, 2021 7:14 PM

This thread is ridiculous and who is the fucking moron saying Italians are 'Black"?

by Anonymousreply 444August 30, 2021 7:16 PM

[quote] who is the fucking moron saying Italians are 'Black" ?

the world

by Anonymousreply 445August 30, 2021 7:19 PM

No they aren't R445.

by Anonymousreply 446August 30, 2021 7:24 PM

yes they are R446, read the thread, tons of articles and historical FACTS

by Anonymousreply 447August 30, 2021 7:26 PM

I think we've gotten a little confused here. OP's position isn't that Italians are black; his ludicrous assertion is that only northern Italians are real Italians, and that southern Italians (and Sicilans) are black, ugly, and trashy,

by Anonymousreply 448August 30, 2021 7:27 PM

They not black BECAUSE they ugly and trashy, they Black AND ugly and trashy. My question was ARE WE SURE THAT NORTHERN ITALIANS ARE BLACK TOO ?, because some family members don't think so

by Anonymousreply 449August 30, 2021 7:30 PM

[quote] I've worked with Africans who don't have a lot of respect for African Americans.

Africans HATE African Americans, they say all the same things that racist white people say about them.

by Anonymousreply 450August 30, 2021 7:30 PM

There are swarthy French, Germans, English, Welsh, etc. but nobody thinks they're anything but white. It's odd that dark hair and dark eyes make some people think "not white!" Very odd.

by Anonymousreply 451August 30, 2021 7:31 PM

No R447. You're a moron and a troll.

by Anonymousreply 452August 30, 2021 7:31 PM

Tons of French and oddly enough Welsh people have dark coloring.

by Anonymousreply 453August 30, 2021 7:34 PM

R452 no, YOU are

by Anonymousreply 454August 30, 2021 7:35 PM

R450 most of the Africans I worked with were from Ghana and were very well educated and well spoken. They didn't respect most AA's because they squandered the opportunities for getting educated and acted like low class hoodrats. The educated ones like Obama were respected but Jay-Zs and Kanyes? No.

by Anonymousreply 455August 30, 2021 7:38 PM

LOL, most Italians don't have blond hair and blue eyes, even in Northern Italy. Not that it matters because those things aren't automatically better except according to racists

Fascinatingly childish and dumb remark. "I know you are but what am I, neener neener" level of maturity going on with you.

by Anonymousreply 457August 30, 2021 7:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 459August 30, 2021 7:42 PM

Oh, R459. I've been here since 1995 so I am familiar, you racist shit-stirring troll.

by Anonymousreply 460August 30, 2021 7:43 PM

since 1995 and you still don't know how to quote ? wow, that's a smart one! are you an Italian American ?

by Anonymousreply 461August 30, 2021 7:48 PM

The OP is a low IQ troll.

He's never been to Italy. Knows nothing.

I loved when he was telling us about the Lega Nord....

LOL.

by Anonymousreply 462August 30, 2021 7:52 PM

Some gems from R59's past rantings.

[quote]OMG R155 you are sooooo stupid. most gays hate themselves, especially you. You are homophobic you hate trans people. You hate muslims, you want to kill them all. "religion kills". OMG. you are the stupidest poster on DL ever. and you must be so old, fat and ugly...sad, or hilarious I don't know

[quote]you're a lez trapped in a male body who forces herself to be a whiny bottom because you are so homophobic you can't even admit your attraction to women, and are afraid to be who you are. Pathetic

by Anonymousreply 463August 30, 2021 7:53 PM

You can tell he's low IQ from his shitty grammar.

by Anonymousreply 464August 30, 2021 7:55 PM

R463 is a frau

by Anonymousreply 465August 30, 2021 7:57 PM

I would suggest FFing this thread and blocking OP. It is fucking ridiculous, childish, uneducated and most of all trolling for attention. Judging from its past comments it's not even American despite claiming to be.

by Anonymousreply 466August 30, 2021 8:05 PM

I would suggest F&Fing and blocking R466 the fucking MAGA frau
