Jennifer Lawrence IS Sue Mengers!

Oh, for fuck's sake.

This is actually great casting.

The physical resemblance is there, and they share a reputation for vulgarity.

by Anonymousreply 1August 9, 2021 4:26 AM

r1 Michelle Williams looks much more like her.

by Anonymousreply 2August 9, 2021 4:27 AM

Michelle Williams is too delicate and classy.

Jennifer Lawrence is a foul-mouthed, titty-shaking slattern. She was blowsy at 27. Perfect for Sue.

by Anonymousreply 3August 9, 2021 4:30 AM

I was certain this one was mine...

Oh well, I guess I'll go ahead and do "Sharknado 7".

by Anonymousreply 4August 9, 2021 4:30 AM

Sue should be a fun scene-stealing supporting character (she's rumored to be a character in the new Paul Thomas Anderson film). Does she really need to have a whole film based around her? Was "I'll Eat You Last" any good?

by Anonymousreply 5August 9, 2021 4:33 AM

But Sue Mengers was fat.

by Anonymousreply 6August 9, 2021 4:41 AM

It won't take much for Jennifer to get there. She has genetic fatface.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 7August 9, 2021 4:45 AM

I don't know, Sue Mengers was fun, a lot of fun, and bitchy and funny and really quite intelligent. Sure, she can put on a fat suit but I have my doubts about JLaw's ability to play this part well.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe she'll be great.

by Anonymousreply 8August 9, 2021 4:53 AM

Another step down for bargain basement discount Jennifer Lawrence.

by Anonymousreply 9August 9, 2021 4:59 AM

Cue the stretch pants

by Anonymousreply 10August 9, 2021 5:01 AM

With Margot Robbie as Barbra Streisand.

by Anonymousreply 11August 9, 2021 5:03 AM

Jennifer doesn’t have that Jewish quality that used to flourish in Hollywood (but is on the way out now that the idiot Jews of Hollywood are obsequiously bending over backwards to give all their jobs to unqualified poc and tranny lunatics).

by Anonymousreply 12August 9, 2021 5:03 AM

I turned down the role. Too busy. Ta!

by Anonymousreply 13August 9, 2021 5:03 AM

Could be fun, but then I’m an elder. Who today cares about Sue Mengers?

by Anonymousreply 14August 9, 2021 5:06 AM

I didn't know Jennifer Lawrence was still a thing

by Anonymousreply 15August 9, 2021 5:08 AM

Another gentile playing a Jewish person?

by Anonymousreply 16August 9, 2021 5:09 AM

There is the little matter of acting ability, of which Jennifer Lawrence has none. The promise she showed in Winter's Bone disappeared within a couple of years and she's been thoroughly mediocre since.

by Anonymousreply 17August 9, 2021 5:10 AM

This requires Mayim Bialik.

by Anonymousreply 18August 9, 2021 5:11 AM

Who is Sue Mengers?

by Anonymousreply 19August 9, 2021 5:11 AM

If rumors are true and JLaw is preggers, she could step right into the role.

by Anonymousreply 20August 9, 2021 5:14 AM

Scarlett Johansson would be better

by Anonymousreply 21August 9, 2021 5:16 AM

I wouldn't wanna do it.

by Anonymousreply 22August 9, 2021 5:21 AM

R5, I’ll Eat You Last was NOT good. Part of it was the staging, of which there wasn’t any. I think Mantello directed? Bette sat on the sofa for the entire show and never moved. It was horribly static and made it difficult to focus at times.

I was at an early preview and Bette had to call for a few lines.

When she didn’t receive a Tony nom, the producers pulled all of the Tony voters’ free comps!

To go from Bette to JLaw is quite the wild ride for Mengers.

by Anonymousreply 23August 9, 2021 5:22 AM

She definitely has to gain like 30 pounds.

by Anonymousreply 24August 9, 2021 5:24 AM

How does she this cum covered slut get work.

by Anonymousreply 25August 9, 2021 5:24 AM

She was only good in "Winter's Bone". They'll grab for any meaty, Oscar type role regardless of suitability. Greedy, mean bitches.

She has a discernible, bitter beer face. It's like she's always smelling a foul odor.

by Anonymousreply 26August 9, 2021 5:28 AM

I'm fat. I can play Sue.

by Anonymousreply 28August 9, 2021 5:59 AM

by Anonymousreply 29August 9, 2021 6:06 AM

I read R9's comment as "bargain basement dismount Jennifer Lawrence."

by Anonymousreply 30August 9, 2021 8:28 AM

Too bad the actress who played Kristy McNichol's "best friend" on Family isn't bankable.

by Anonymousreply 31August 9, 2021 8:32 AM

Kirtsen Dunst or Anna Paquin or Julia Stiles could play Sue, but JLaw must play Babs!!!

by Anonymousreply 32August 9, 2021 8:38 AM

J Aniston must play Babs. Who will play crazy Faye Dunaway?

by Anonymousreply 33August 9, 2021 8:58 AM

Emily Blunt could channel Faye channeling Joan.

by Anonymousreply 34August 9, 2021 9:07 AM

Barbra would totally want some beauty playing her. A more realistic-looking actress will piss her off to no end.

by Anonymousreply 35August 9, 2021 9:19 AM

Just to piss Barbra off they should cast Bette's daughter Sophie as Barbra.

by Anonymousreply 36August 9, 2021 9:26 AM

[quote] Barbra would totally want some beauty playing her.

I don't see what the issue is. I still don't get what the problem was with Halle Berry not being able to sing.

by Anonymousreply 37August 9, 2021 9:27 AM

My favorite Sue Mengers anecdote...

"Sue decided to get a running machine. As she was trying one out in the store, Jean-Claude turned from his wife, who was dressed in a caftan and scarf and puffing on the treadmill, to the salesman and asked, not too quietly, if the store carried “the Isadora Duncan model.”

by Anonymousreply 46August 9, 2021 2:22 PM

Jennifer would have to play Barbra with a prosthetic nose. She seems really miscast as short, chubby, Jewish Sue.

by Anonymousreply 47August 9, 2021 4:18 PM

[quote] Was "I'll Eat You Last" any good?

I didn't see the show but I read the script and thought it was pretty good. It could be Bette couldn't put it over for the same reason she couldn't put over Rose, because her need to be liked overrided the necessity of playing the character as at least a bit of an arsehole. The thing about Mengers is that (a) the people she repped are A-listers from a time that people aren't that fascinated by, and (b) she was actually a shitty agent--she was good at poaching established talent from other agencies, but what services she provided for them was questionable. Especially in the case of Barbra, whose film career she sabotaged in a selfish, careless fashion. Maybe you could use Mengers to tell a timely story about a celebrity con artist who claws their way to the top, only to wreak havoc on the people who trusted them.

by Anonymousreply 48August 9, 2021 4:42 PM

Meredith Baxter would have KILLED this part twenty years ago. Ann Jillian as well.

Lawrence is campy in a Southern white trash way. Mengers was upper class echelon, goofy. Kind of like an Auntie Mame of Hollywood.

Clearly, we're off to the wrong start.

by Anonymousreply 49August 9, 2021 4:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 53August 9, 2021 5:25 PM

Ah when I read the thread title I thought this was going to be about “The Big Goodbye,” which I recently read. They’re turning that into a movie and Sue represented Faye.

by Anonymousreply 54August 9, 2021 5:26 PM

I don’t see how this movie could work unless Barbra was a major character. That means you have a movie with multiple celebrity impersonations.

by Anonymousreply 55August 9, 2021 5:42 PM

I don't think some of the posters here are familiar with Sue Mengers. Lawrence is all wrong for the role.

by Anonymousreply 56August 9, 2021 5:44 PM

Sue and Barbra really is the whole story.

I mean, she had other clients, but Barbra was her cherished possession.

by Anonymousreply 57August 9, 2021 5:47 PM

They should cast the actress from Bridgerton/Derry Girls. She's short and stout.

by Anonymousreply 58August 9, 2021 5:51 PM

They need a Jennifer Coolidge type for Sue.

by Anonymousreply 59August 9, 2021 5:53 PM

Shue Menshersh.

by Anonymousreply 60August 9, 2021 5:55 PM

Mengers wasn't a young woman - or didn't read as one - when she had her greatest success. Can Zelwegger play Noo Yawk?

by Anonymousreply 61August 9, 2021 5:55 PM

Jennifer Lawrence= cum splattered asshole and face photos. She’s unwanted by the public. The older crowd will adore a film about Mengers. Don’t ruin it. Try Beanie Feldstein.

by Anonymousreply 62August 9, 2021 5:59 PM

What was that joke re Mengers? "Ryan O'Neal for The Godfather?"?

by Anonymousreply 63August 9, 2021 6:00 PM

Mengers wasn't "fat" by today's Standards. Doughy perhaps but some of you are acting like she was an obese Brooklyn yenta. No. She wasn't. She was a German Jew. She was pithy, a bit catty and glib. But her style was more of a dry, quick-witted German snappiness kind of thing and not the campy Jewess some of you queens here are trying to frame her as.

by Anonymousreply 64August 9, 2021 6:00 PM

With DL fave Tony Perkins.

Sue was NOT upper class. Her family was quite poor. They moved to the US just before the war. Her father committed suicide and her mom was a bookkeeper. I've been pissed at JLaw since the "I'm mean to my fans" thing but she has the trashy who thinks she's better than everyone else thing Sue had. If she gains 30 lbs the Oscar is hers.

by Anonymousreply 66August 9, 2021 6:29 PM

r48 Exactly, but you know this is just going to be some "slayyy Girlboss" shit. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 69August 9, 2021 6:42 PM

I don't think Babs needs any help at self sabotage. Streisand bounced back from "All Night Long" easily. Can we blame "Nuts" on Sue Mengers? Or course not.

by Anonymousreply 71August 9, 2021 6:48 PM

[quote]Especially in the case of Barbra, whose film career she sabotaged in a selfish, careless fashion.

After having read the Mengers biography by Brian Kellow, the only one I felt sorry for was Lisa Eichorn. Her reputation was destroyed with that stunt Sue pulled. Barbra knew what she was getting into (She even got a better salary than Eichorn). Barbra just got pissed that the movie flopped.

I do wonder if Sue was bisexual, because the way she treated Streisand and basically made her the center of her universe speaks to some unrequited love on Sue's end. And packing it all up because Barbra left? As the book said, Sue had numerous clients come and go without a blink, but what made Streisand that special that Sue ended her own career when she departed? She even went into a depression for a number of years afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 72August 9, 2021 6:49 PM

Sue didn't pull that stunt. Gene Hackman did.

by Anonymousreply 73August 9, 2021 7:06 PM

After watching the interview at R68, I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. Should be fun. Based on her performance in American Hustle, I think J Law can play this role. I have no opinion about her as a person, but she's a decent actress. Scarlett Johansen would be even better.

by Anonymousreply 74August 9, 2021 7:06 PM

Sue was open about not having a nose for scripts. Streisand movies tended to make money even if they weren't good... It's seems pretty plain why Mengers went into depression. She lost her Sure Thing.

by Anonymousreply 75August 9, 2021 7:08 PM

My favorite thing about Sue Mengers is that in the days after the Manson murders, she told her nervous clients, "They're not killing stars. Just featured players."

by Anonymousreply 76August 9, 2021 7:10 PM

La Lawrence sucks the fun out of everything with her dull acting and dead eyes.

by Anonymousreply 77August 9, 2021 7:14 PM

And then they're the Constance Bennett billing quip - Bennett wanted her Madame X billing to feature her name within a black rectangle. When Constance popped her clogs, Sue remarked that "Connie got her box."

by Anonymousreply 81August 9, 2021 7:22 PM

If Dyan Cannon, of all people, could nail Sue Mengers at age 35, I think Jennifer Lawrence can handle it at 31.

by Anonymousreply 82August 9, 2021 7:25 PM

Dyan Cannon is a great "Neely" in one of the follow up Jacquie Susann screen adaptations. I can't remember the character's name.

by Anonymousreply 83August 9, 2021 7:29 PM

Meghan Trainor could play Sue and she can sing too. But JLaw must play Babs. It's non-negotiable!!!

by Anonymousreply 91August 9, 2021 8:27 PM

Did Mengers rep Perkins or just beard for occasions?

by Anonymousreply 92August 9, 2021 8:42 PM

This film getting made is yet another capricious act by capricious people to tell the story of a capricious woman.

by Anonymousreply 93August 9, 2021 8:49 PM

Hahahahahaha! 1975

by Anonymousreply 98August 9, 2021 9:02 PM

Yeah, $200K in 1975 was worth about $1 million now adjusted for inflation … but still, that’s nothing compared to what a top agent handling A-list talent makes today.

by Anonymousreply 99August 9, 2021 9:07 PM

Truly have no idea who Sue Mengers is, and I pride myself on knowing a lot about pop culture from 40-55 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 100August 9, 2021 9:19 PM

[quote]Dyan Cannon is a great "Neely" in one of the follow up Jacquie Susann screen adaptations. I can't remember the character's name.

Dyan Cannon was in The Love Machine, playing the socialite wife of a television network president. The character was obviously supposed to be Babe Paley. When Jacqueline Susann was told that Cannon was cast, she was not happy because she didn't think Cannon was "classy" enough to play that character.

by Anonymousreply 101August 9, 2021 9:34 PM

Sue was what politely used to be called "zaftig."

by Anonymousreply 102August 9, 2021 9:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 112August 10, 2021 12:56 AM

I feel like this would work better as a miniseries than a film.

by Anonymousreply 113August 10, 2021 12:59 AM

My SO and I saw Midler in the limited run Broadway show based on Mengers and she fucking KILLED IT.

Sue was a chubby girl (permanent munchies?) and had an acid tongue and amazing comedic timing. Lawrence is a SNOOZE. Pork up Kate Hudson and throw a caftan on her. She'd be a better choice. Or Emily Blunt. Or make La McCarthy lose a gunt and a chin and she could get the comedy camp into it, at least.

by Anonymousreply 114August 10, 2021 1:00 AM

This is a terrible idea. The flop will be so LOUD. Lawrence was NEVER box -office outside the franchises, her fanbase have out-grown her, they still haven't forget the pics of her face full of Harvey's cum floating around the net, and the younger crowds don't know her. She should have waited a good 20 years before attempting a comeback, perhaps as a survivor of breast cancer or something similar, with a sob story the endear the fraus who liked her romcoms. I'm embarrassed for her. She's just setting herself up for more humiliation. Some people really can't read the room.

by Anonymousreply 115August 10, 2021 1:10 AM

Paolo Sorrentino's films are hollow crap that THINKS it's art. "Youth" was laughable.

Will JLaw be putting on the pounds for this or wear a fat suit?

by Anonymousreply 124August 10, 2021 3:40 AM

As her friend David Geffen puts it, “She had the greatest client list of any agent in Hollywood.” Her stable included most of the top-of-the-line actresses of the era, first and foremost among them Barbra Streisand in her glory days, when her voice could make strong men weep; but also Ali MacGraw in hers, before Steve McQueen put her in front of a stove; Cher; Cybill Shepherd; Candice Bergen; Faye Dunaway; and Dyan Cannon, as well as a handful of important male stars such as Ryan O’Neal, Burt Reynolds, Gene Hackman, Tony Perkins, Michael Caine, and Nick Nolte. She also represented many of the blue-chip auteurs of the director’s decade, men such as Arthur Penn, Peter Bogdanovich, Mike Nichols, Brian De Palma, Sidney Lumet, and Jonathan Demme. “You couldn’t do a movie without Sue,” says John Calley, who was a top Warner executive throughout the 70s and today heads Sony Pictures Entertainment. “When you’d have a problem, you’d go to her, and she would make it go away. She was the Man.”

One of Mengers’s clients was Constance Bennett, Joan’s sister and a fading star in her own right. Mengers knocked herself out to get Bennett into her “comeback” film: Madame X (the umpteenth remake of a 1908 French melodrama), which starred Lana Turner and Ricardo Montalban and was produced by Ross Hunter. Instead of being grateful, Bennett complained about her billing below Turner, demanding that her name be set off by a box on the ads and posters. It wasn’t. Bennett, who had gotten a hefty salary, refused to pay her commission to the agency. Then, just before the movie came out, she died. Mengers sent Hunter a telegram that said, Constance finally got her box!

Mengers thought it would be good for Paula Prentiss if she worked with Alan Pakula—who had had a big hit with Klute—and insisted she woo the director for a part in The Parallax View, the 1974 political thriller starring Warren Beatty. Recalls Prentiss, “Sue said, ‘Hon-eee, go to lunch with him and wear very, very tight pants,’ which I did. She said it was the way they do it at MGM, which is that they sew them to your underwear.”

Joan Collins was turning middle-aged, with children, a broken marriage, going through a bad patch. Sue said to Joan, ‘Give it up. You’ve got enough money to live on, you’ve got children to raise, just settle down, forget the business.’ With that, Joan left Sue and got Dynasty, I think just to show her up.”

Three months later, on Oscar night, after her former client Faye Dunaway’s performance in Network brought her the Academy Award for best actress, Sue was standing near Dunaway outside the Beverly Hills Hotel, about to go to a victory party Sidney Lumet was throwing. Sue walked over to Dunaway’s agent, Joel Dean, and, within earshot of Dunaway, said, “Don’t let this little trophy make Faye think she’s a movie star. She’s not. The only movie star in the whole town is Barbra Streisand.”

by Anonymousreply 144August 11, 2021 7:26 AM

BUT STREISAND NEVER DID A KUSTURICA FILM!

by Anonymousreply 145August 11, 2021 5:50 PM

Sorry if this was posted upthread, but the following is to me the funniest Sue Mengers story:

[quote]When the Manson family murders took place, Mengers reportedly reassured Streisand: "Don't worry, honey, stars aren't being murdered. Only featured players."

by Anonymousreply 146August 12, 2021 11:25 PM

Sue was all heart.

by Anonymousreply 147August 13, 2021 6:18 PM

Barbra & Sue had a falling out over "All Night Long", which Sue's hubby directed.

Bette slayed the Sue character and I think she could still do the picture! She gets the Yiddish words and inflections perfectly, and has the comedic timing and sophistication for the role.

by Anonymousreply 149August 13, 2021 7:03 PM

[Quote] Sue was all heart.

I can well believe she had an enlarged heart.

by Anonymousreply 150August 13, 2021 7:20 PM

Fat or thin, I'd like to kick JLAW right in the pussy.

by Anonymousreply 151August 13, 2021 8:51 PM

R12 for the racist home run!

by Anonymousreply 152August 13, 2021 8:53 PM

R16 = Sarah Silverman

by Anonymousreply 153October 21, 2021 12:54 AM

sue was a mean grouchy old biddy who secretly no one could stand.

by Anonymousreply 154October 24, 2021 6:42 AM

How about Natasha Lyonne? Although born in Germany, Mengers was essentially a New Yorker like Lyonne.

by Anonymousreply 155October 24, 2021 7:17 AM

lol #152

by Anonymousreply 156October 24, 2021 7:18 AM

[quote]Meredith Baxter would have KILLED this part twenty years ago. Ann Jillian as well.

And Jennifer Coolidge.

by Anonymousreply 157October 24, 2021 8:04 AM

Bette Midler could still do it.

by Anonymousreply 158October 25, 2021 12:28 AM

Jennifer Coolidge would have nailed the part.

by Anonymousreply 159October 25, 2021 1:23 AM

Lala Kent could do it as well

by Anonymousreply 160October 26, 2021 1:03 AM

R160 how high are you??

by Anonymousreply 161October 26, 2021 5:23 AM

Rumour has it that JLaw is angling for a Marvel role to keep her hand in as a name actress since she’ll soon be a mom in her 30s.

Considering that her acting in The Hunger Games became progressively more indifferent with each film - hey, if Woody Harrelson and Julianne Moore can show up and give their all, what makes her so special she brags about doing scenes on Ambien? - I don’t know that she’ll be worth it.

by Anonymousreply 162October 26, 2021 5:58 AM

The Hunger Games and Twilight franchises are a snooze. An Ambien-induced performance is appropos.

by Anonymousreply 163October 26, 2021 8:05 AM

R162 I don't understand why since she seemed miserable filming the X-Men movies.

by Anonymousreply 164October 26, 2021 9:12 AM

R163 no, fuck that. Far more critically acclaimed actors managed to not be uppity and put in good performances. One Weinstein-sponsored Oscar and she’s too good to take the money and so her damn job.

by Anonymousreply 165October 26, 2021 11:52 AM

R164 money and caché.

by Anonymousreply 166October 26, 2021 11:53 AM

Did Sue Mengers brag about being an asshole to her fans? Assuming she had any.

by Anonymousreply 167October 26, 2021 7:45 PM

R166 makes sense.

by Anonymousreply 168October 27, 2021 8:32 AM

Will Jennifer have to gain 100 pounds? Sue was FAT.
