Comparisons to the “French Dispatch” and “Call Me By Your Name” star bubble up from time to time and reemerged after Duplantis soared 19 feet, 9 inches, ahead of silver medalist Christopher Nilsen of the U.S. and bronze medalist Thiago Braz da Silva of Brazil.

That’s a bit mean, OP. Armand is quite attractive.

Armand is the taller, sportier and more handsome version.

In that photo he looks like that funny looking little actor from the Hobbit thingy. I think DL was mad for him for awhile. One of those tangents.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 4, 2021 12:39 PM |
He’s from Louisiana, not Sweden, so his name is French. Not a complete shock that he bears a resemblance to Monsieur O’Tay.

Because they don’t have to compete to get to the Olympics. Mondo admitted it in the Times article.

R23 Well, Duplantis is half-Swedish and a Swedish citizen.

He needs to speak and write in American!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 4, 2021 6:21 PM |
R22 there seems to be something odd with his hands in the photo. Why is the thumb of his left hand in that odd position? I don't see how it can be done.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 4, 2021 6:27 PM |
If he's American, why didn't he compete for the US?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 4, 2021 6:51 PM |
R33, he is half Swedish, so,is his time between the two countries and seriously which country would you choose between Sweden and the US? There is no competition.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 4, 2021 7:55 PM |
Didn't like the first one
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 4, 2021 7:56 PM |
He’s a pussy. He didn’t compete for the US because he didn’t want to go through the effort to actually make the team. I guess it’s better to be a big fish in a little pond rather than a little fish in a big pond, but still.
It’s interesting how in the States we only care about gymnastics, swimming, basketball, and sprinting when it comes to the main events. Nobody really cares about pole vaulting and nobody knew who he was until the past week. Also, despite all the jokes about him competing for the better country, he’s famous in Sweden mainly for being American.

Duplantis was born into an athletic family; his American father, Greg Duplantis, who is of Cajun descent, is a former pole vaulter with a personal best of 5.80 m (19 ft 1⁄4 in), while his Swedish mother Helena (née Hedlund) is a former heptathlete and volleyball player. His two older brothers, Andreas and Antoine, and his younger sister, Johanna, also took up sports; Andreas represented Sweden as a pole vaulter at the 2009 World Youth Championships and 2012 World Junior Championships, while Antoine dropped pole vault for baseball in high school before heading to Louisiana State University where he became the team's career hits leader in 2019.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | August 5, 2021 6:28 PM |
I get that he's half ethnically Swedish and that race and nationality don't need to match up - but one would expect him to be able to at least speak decent Swedish. Ethiopian runners have won medals for Italy - but they were fluent in Italian. Basic white girl Kirsty Coventry has won 7 medals for Zimbabwe but she was born there, lives there, and is a cabinet member in the government. Armand has never lived in Sweden, doesn't speak Swedish, trained in the US, and is not a Swedish citizen. He is just going to slither back to the bayou after this win. It's not really a win for Sweden.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | August 5, 2021 6:59 PM |
R90 No, Duplantis has dual American and Swedish citizenship. He speaks Swedish but with a heavy accent. Here he is speaking Swedish with his family:

Nilsen sounds bitter lol
[italic]The pole vaulter who grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana, laughed when asked if there was any backlash after deciding to represent Sweden rather than the United States in the Tokyo Games.
“It was chill in the beginning,’’ Armand "Mondo" Duplantis said. “But I think maybe now it would probably be worse.’’
---
Chris Nilsen, the American who lost the gold to Duplantis at the Tokyo Games, expressed admiration for the U.S.-born Swede.
“If I’m being honest, if I had a mother who was from a different country, I would’ve gone with the other country,’’ Nilsen said. “Not to say I don’t love the United States, but it’s so much easier for people who don’t compete for the United States to get in because the United States Olympic team is the hardest team in the world to make.’’
by Anonymous | reply 105 | August 5, 2021 10:43 PM |
Ohhhhh, the shade at R105.
Well Mr. Nilsen, he may not have made the US Olympic team, but he did win the Gold Medal.

R105. Perhaps that's true, but is Nilsen absolutely sure? It's also very difficult to make the Olympic team from China, Australia, Russia, The Netherlands, Germany, etc. But in Olympic competition, Armand did compete against American pole vaulters--and he still beat them with a score of 6.02. He won the gold. The Americans came in second (5.97) and fourth who also tied with the Greek pole vaulter (5.80).
by Anonymous | reply 112 | August 5, 2021 11:07 PM |

R108. Armand Duplantis holds dual citizenship (American and Swedish). His mother is from Sweden. He speaks both English and Swedish. Duplantis could have chosen to vault for either country internationally; in June 2015 it was announced that he had selected Sweden.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | August 5, 2021 11:14 PM |
Nilsen just sounds jealous - of course Olympic teams are difficult to get a spot in, regardless of country. Did Nilsen forget that Duplantis even holds the vault world record at 6.18?? Nilsen will never vault even close to that height.

by Anonymous | reply 124 | August 6, 2021 12:41 AM |
Armand is also a much bigger celebrity and figure in Sweden than he would've been in the US even with the same results. The US has many medalists; Sweden, not a great sporting country, has very few. Norway, half Sweden's size, produces many more top athletes than Sweden and doesn't have to import any athletes like Sweden always does.

That's just stupid. Tennis, golf, swimming, hockey, etc - Sweden outperforms for a nation of their size.
Norway wins cross-country skiing medals and a few other winter sports. Name a famous Norwegian athlete - not from this Olympics. You can't.

[quote]Norway wins cross-country skiing medals and a few other winter sports. Name a famous Norwegian athlete - not from this Olympics. You can't.
R152. I tend to agree with you about Sweden winning it's fair share of Olympic medals particularly in the Winter Games. Sweden has consistently won medals for skiing and hockey among other winter sports. However, Norway is a powerhouse in the Winter Olympics winning more medals throughout the years than any other nation. Norway ranks Number One in the Winter Games even if you demand that someone name a Norwegian athlete and decide the other person cannot do it.
But for the record, here are a few Norwegian athletes: alpine skier Aksel Lund Svindal, ice hockey Alexander Bonsaksen, ski jumper Bjørn Einar Romøren, speed skater Christoffer Fagerli Rukke, speed skater Johann Olav Koss, figure skater Sonja Henie and cross-country skier Therese Johaug. The Summer Games in Tokyo produced gold medalist Karsten Warholm who broke the World and Olympic records for track and field, 400m hurdles.

To add to R160 list - 3 Norwegian track and field (I'm being American friendly) Olympic champion of the last quarter of a century: Vebjørn Rodal (800 m', Atlanta), Trine Hattestad (javelin, Sydney) and Andreas Thorkildsen (javlin', Athens, Beijing).

Any excuse to drag Chalamet’s name into a thread.
You could start a thread about Mother Teresa and the Timmy stans would find a way to drag his name into it.
This man doesn’t resemble Chalamet in the least!
Please, stop it.

Renaud is only encouraging Mondo to surpass his limits because it’ll make his twink taint even muskier.
