Wait is this the animal or the Mexican smugglers, because I think they are pronounced differently.

In New York, the expressway to JFK is named for NYC's first Mayor Robert Van Wyck, pronounced Van Wike by the family. Same "yck" as Wyckoff, New Jersey. Traffic reporters say Van Wick, "because most locals say it that way." The ignorant prevail.

Most of the world says Van Gogh a particular way rather then how it is said in the actual Dutch, sometimes the more well known supersedes the truth.

How about people who pronounce it as it would be in Spanish: coy-OH-tay? Why are EITHER of the Anglicized versions (ky-OATY or KY-oat) any better?

by Anonymousreply 9August 2, 2021 4:53 PM

If you want to get technical, R9, Spanish borrowed the word from the Aztec.
