The doctors weren't working for MGM. They were trying to put his face (broken bones, mostly) back together. They didn't know what it was going to look like until it healed. They did no further surgery. Clift actually went back to work before he was advised to, he was advised to quit the film and he felt his career would be over if he did (he had already been off the screen 4 years).
