Matt Damon says "red state role" changed his perspective
Socially and politically, Matt Damon sits on the opposite end of the spectrum from Bill Baker. That’s the character the actor portrays in Stillwater, writer-director Tom McCarthy’s dramatic thriller very loosely inspired by the story of Amanda Knox about an American dad desperately attempting to free his college-aged daughter (Abigail Breslin) from a French jail after she’s convicted of murder.
Damon is a wealthy Hollywood liberal. Baker is a struggling Oklahoma oil rig worker, or “roughneck,” who is conservative and who, Damon has said, would have voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. To prepare for Stillwater, Damon and McCarthy spent weeks in Oklahoma engulfed in red-state roughneck culture.
“When Tom McCarthy and I got down there, [the roughnecks] were justifiably wary of us,” Damon, whose transformative performance is drawing early Oscar buzz, told us during a recent press day (watch director and cast interviews above). “They were like, ‘Y’all are making a movie about a roughneck. What are you doing? Are you gonna make fun of us? What’s your game here?’ And when they realized what we were doing, the angle that we took, and the empathy that the film has for Bill, they really gave us incredible access to their lives and really helped us. I mean this portrayal is entirely possible because of the access that those guys gave me.”
Damon admits he took on the part to connect with Americans who have vastly different viewpoints.
“And help everybody better understand,” he says. “And also it’s a great reminder for me just in researching this and going down to Oklahoma and hanging with these roughnecks that I always leave those research trips kind of angry at politicians for stoking those divides as much as they do. The things that bind us are so much greater than the things that divide us and I really feel that in a profound way every time. And I’m lucky that my job allows to go kind of parachute into other peoples’ lives and they give me access.
“Just going down and talking and hanging out with them changes [your perspective]. It always helps … talking to each other helps, rather than staying in an echo chamber and talking to people we agree with. There’s so much more common ground than we think.”

Amanda Know is a nasty trashy cunt whom the media whitewashed for a number of reasons including xenophobia. I'm not a fan of today's so-called conservatives and their mentality either, but I see Matt Damon's approach to see common ground and empathize with them as a positive not a negative. We need to stop this tribal view of left vs. right and us vs. them. Since Obama was elected president in 2008 Republicans and their pundits have purposely been sparking the differences between the social and political camps in order to divide and conquer. The fact that someone so incredibly unqualified for president as Trump won the election in 2016 was the result of hate, misinformation and tribalism. While the film Stillwater is just that, only a movie, we do need to find common ground and bring some unity back to America or else we will eventually spiral into civil war. And this nonsensical shit about cancelling an actor or entertainer because we don't agree with one of their roles or projects is ridiculous. Just don't see the fucking film then.

Aww, Amanda is teed off? Will the movie touch upon how Amanda/ Abigail fabricated a story about being slapped by cops, kept there for hours and denied an interpreter ? While in reality they spoke English to her , kept her there for a relatively short period and gave her chamomile tea. Probably not.

[quote]We need to stop this tribal view of left vs. right and us vs. them.
Except this isn't your typical right vs left. This is not about a dispute over paying for infrastructure; that's not where the lines are drawn. It's MTG using a political ad featuring herself carrying an assault rifle pointed at the heads of several of her colleagues - who all happen to be non-white, ethnic women.
It's about the dehumanization of certain groups which is the only reason someone as unqualified and downright putrid and stupid as Trump took over that major political party.
[quote]we do need to find common ground
If you're an American who happens to be black, Hispanic or Muslim, how do you find common ground with people who don't even accept you as one? I'm the one who earlier in this thread mentioned a Dr. Faisal Khan. I suggest you look him up and see what he was a subjected to a couple of days ago at a meeting in St. Louis over a mask mandate. The instincts of these people with whom you think you can find "common ground" on full display. A public servant looking out for the well-being of these people with whom we're to find "common ground" attacking him with racism and xenophobia, because that's how they "debate."
The establishment left (which is overwhelmingly white) is constantly doing everything to coddle, enable and dismiss what the right has become and what they clearly stand for: bigotry, racism, supremacy.

Tired of the false equivalence of all opinions are worthy of validity and respect. Points of view and attitudes that reflect ignorance, bigotry or something that can be verified as untrue don’t get equal consideration. That is bullshit pushed by Fox, GOP and corporation’s because it gets people to believe that they can choose their own truth so people vote based on biased opinions rather than making an informed decision. I have relatives that are very nice people personally, but when it comes to sociopolitical issues, usually their opinions are defined by Fox “News” or whatever they hear or see that aligns with their personal opinion or bias. I can respect them personally, but I don’t have to respect their misinformed opinions. That’s where we are fucked, because ignorant people used to more or less acknowledge they didn’t know—or deferred to experts. Now everyone thinks they are an expert.
And remember, Damon is trying to sell the movie to the masses. That’s his prime motivation.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 61 | July 30, 2021 10:52 PM

Humans may have the same or even a comparable range of feelings or emotions. However, opinions are shaped by life experience, education and formal logic. That is why not all opinions are equal. We know that expert opinions are needed in courts of law. Opinions are only equivalent in sensory matters--I love dogs, I hate ice cream, I believe in Catholicism--whose consequences are not going to inflict harm on another human being. And even that is not always true. Everyone knows someone whose restaurant or movie recommendations they would dismiss out of hand.
There are things about which reasonable people can differ, but people who are bigots or conspiracy freaks are by definition not reasonable. "All opinions are equal" is a refuge of fundamentalists and the uneducated.
Damon is pretty stupid if he thinks his access and his ability to communicate with these people is not a function of his being a straight, white, successful man who's done movies like the Bourne series.

Children are a blessing and should not be blamed for Damon wanting an Oscar. The less talented Ben already has one or two. And he's discreetly back with Jennifer Lopez! They have 5 beautiful children between them and she is still fertile. Children solidify and consecrate love between a man and woman. This is one of many reasons why gay relationships never last longer than 5 years. Always another streetcar coming or new bathhouse to explore, right fellows?
Matt is still happily married to his beautiful wife, who comes from the lower classes herself. She was once a waitress. I doubt that they are greedy or in need of money. This film sounds controversial. Matt Damon doesn't shy away from giving it his all. He can both illuminate and win and Oscar. Like Leo and Ben and Sean Penn. Casey Affleck. Matt does look a bit older now. This is true. Fathers and mothers regularly sacrifice some vanity for their children. Gays buy their kids or cook em up in lab between eyebrow waxing. It's not the same. No extended family love and support = future problems. To say the least.

Obama gave coal miners the opportunity to train for new jobs so that they're actually prepared to live in a world which is looking to renewable, cleaner forms of energy. The Dems aren't the ones attempting to give tax cuts to the wealthy employers who couldn't give less of shit about the safety of people who work on oil rigs.
The only thing you can learn from them is that they've convinced themselves they're the only "real Americans" and that they are the ones who pay taxes and everyone else has their hand out. They gravitated to Trump who doesn't pay taxes, has treated working people like shit, has no idea what it is like to struggle, is incredibly unpatriotic and looks down on his own supporters, solely because of his white supremacist horseshit.

Is there a reason they're now called roughneck instead of rednecks? I'm tired of people like Damon trying to mythologize these assholes into some kind of heroes. They don't work harder than liberals, they aren't more moral, they aren't better. In fact, they are complete and total racist assholes, and if you live amongst them you know that.

Roughnecks refer SPECIFICALLY to people (mostly men) who work on oil rigs. I remember the term being used in "Brokeback Mountain," when Alma Jr. was telling Ennis that she was getting married to a guy who works on the oil rigs, and Ennis said "He's a roughneck?"
REDnecks are something different.
The general idea is that they're unsophisticated, blue collar country people.

[quote]Cooper did it with "American Sniper" and that murderous right-wing asshole Chris Kyle.
I never saw the movie for this very reason and the fact is that if Hollywood were being truthful, they'd portray him as he really was: A racist killer who went to call kill "sandniggers" in their own country. I esp. love the portrayal of the dutiful wife. Did the real-life one ever actually give money to vet orgs the way she promised or did she just keep it all like the greedy bitch she really is?

All of the roughnecks in Canada are absolute trash. I'd assume the same is true in the US.

Here's an example of what roughnecks do for work, R103.
It doesn't look like fun.
But I'm guessing they make a lot of money.

Don't put them down. One day, they're gonna train at NASA for like 5 mins and then save us from a meteor headed to destroy earth.

I guess they should have finished high school then, R110. They're mostly overpaid grunts who vote conservatively, and are raging homophobes and racists. They make a living by destroying the environment and refuse to believe in climate change and alternative green energy.

These MAGA "Roughneck" people are troglodytes. There is no sympathizing with them or excusing their despicable behavior. Fuck Matt Damon for trying to make them sympathetic.

"Damon admits he took on the part to connect with Americans who have vastly different viewpoints." lmfao
Take a seat, Matt.

The only safe subjects are dogs and cats, and maybe gardening. We're wired differently. They want us to cease to exist and we just wish they'd leave us alone.

r104 Thank you! That explains why a bumper sticker I see at a local 7-11 on a huge truck says Rough, Red and Proud.
I could never figure out if the guy was talking about his dick or what.

Yeah—acting like this film was some cinematic mission of goodwill and brotherhood is disingenuous.

Well, yeah. If you look at something like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, it's easy to see how we're all pretty similar in the large base sections. It's when you get to the Esteem level that things start to change. Then, they get really different when you reach Self-Actualization.
Maybe we've got too much time on our hands for self-actualization now... lol!

R119 i dont believe that she's really upset. She seems to relish the spotlight. Last I heard of her she was posing with Lorena Bobbitt while grinning from ear to ear. She's a nut job.
