I like her look and she had a lovely voice.
I also liked the movie Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams which is on youtube. Why wasn't she a bigger star in the 1930's and 1940's. Some of you eldergays must know.

She *was* a big star in the 1930s. Lots of high-profile films.

Did she have Graves Disease? She always looked like she could have been the poster child for it before Barbara Bush came along.

She appeared on some episodes of thirtysomething as Melissa's grandmother. Her voice was VERY raspy from smoking all of those cigarettes. By the 1960's Lucille Ball had the same raspy CIGARETTE voice as Sylvia Sidney

My mom looked so much like Sylvia Sidney and always considered herself ugly--too flat a nose, too wide a mouth--but I think she's lovely. Loved her as the receptionist in Beetlejuice!

Sylvia was Mother Carlson (radio station owner) in the pilot episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. She hired (hot) Andy. Another actress played the character throughout the rest of the series.

I also think she would have had a great face for silent movies. If only she were born 10-20 years before.

I’ve always wondered if she is the eponymous Sylvia in the song “Sylvia’s Mother?”

I prefer Sylvia Miles.
