Who was the most beautiful film star?

Male and dead.

It's hard to beat Paul Newman.

Rock Hudson and Steve McQueen should be on this list.

In addition to their beauty, they both sported big cocks.

One woman described McQueen's dick as "two Coors cans welded together."

Paul Newman was incredibly good looking.

Unfortunately he always seemed to know you thought so. Every role I’ve ever seen him in, he seemed to lean on that and whatever attraction I would have had fizzled out for me.

Cary Grant simply blew me away, no matter what film he was in. Breathtaking. It was like he found being handsome trivial and insisted on focusing on whatever matter was at hand. I found that quality to be mesmerizing.

The handsome colleague or neighbour you can fantasise about who also happens to be a nice, friendly guy. While he was sexy, he was not intimidatingly so like Alain delon for example. He seemed approachable.

Tony Curtis in Spartacus...."I am a singeh of sorngs." Oi vey.

After Alain Delon, it is surprising that most French actors are not the least bit attractive, with some that are ok, like Thierry L'Hermite and Benoit Magimel. The others, eg Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu, are no one's idea of attractive.

However, some of the new young ones are quite beautiful - Benjamin Voisin, Axel Auriant, and Maxence Danet-Fauvel.

Bonjour, R78! It is because I live in France. I forgot about Gaspard Ulliel, but again he is one of the younger ones with a modeling background like Voisin and Danet-Fauvel. Victor Meutelet and Lucas Bravo are pretty but cannot compare to Delon or Brando. Louis Jourdan was briefly beautiful, true. I love watching Louis Garrel, who seems to masturbate onscreen in many of his films, but he is not beautiful. I also loved Belmondo, but again, not beautiful. The other three you mentioned are average. Richard Berry is or was, very, very sexy.

Just my opinion, of course. Bonne journée ! (R77)

by Anonymousreply 85July 31, 2021 7:38 AM

R85 Bonjour, seriously, who the fuck can compete with Delon and Brando anyways ? They were both the most beautiful men in the world.

Lol if you can say Garrel is n not beautiful and Richard Berry is/was very very very sexy and the others are average, well, I get why we don't have the same tastes in men.

Young Belmondo was hot asf, but okay.

by Anonymousreply 88July 31, 2021 7:49 AM

Marcello Mastroianni

If not “beautiful,” beyond smoldering and sexy. That he turned out some of the most iconic performances in film history only adds to his allure. If someone is pretty, but a bad actor, some of their “pretty” fades for me, whereas a talented actor becomes even hotter in my eyes.

by Anonymousreply 89July 31, 2021 7:50 AM

Mastroianni has a claim to second-tier beauty. I can't get past Belmondo's big nose and coarse lips, though I loved it that he did his own stunt work. I do think that the French are embracing the look of more feminine-looking actors and so the current crop is more conventionally beautiful.

Delon certainly was one of the greats and also one of the great assholes. What a fucked up life.

For some reason Gerard Phillipe is little known today but not only did he have a beautiful soulful look but his performances range from existential anti hero tragedy to popular fun adventure movies with equal ability. He died at 36.

"Beautiful" is a step above "handsome," for both men and women.

"Handsome" can include a crooked nose, pocked complexion, receding hairline, strong jawline.

"Beautiful" is features in perfect proportion and close to ideal shape. "Lush" is good.

Examples: JFK was handsome. JFK, Jr., was beautiful.

Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, William Holden, handsome. Montgomery Clift, Tyrone Power, Tony Curtis, beautiful.

My opinions!

R62,

Many say Montgomery Clift was beautiful, but I just don't see it. I see a good face for a character actor. Not too pretty. Not too rugged. Not too comic. Not too ethnic, but not to white. And not much sex, either. Hollywood produced some gorgeous men, but Montgomery Clift is not one of them. Guy Madison is. Montgomery Clift is certainly not.

How anyone could exclude William Holden from their list of most beautiful male film stars is another mystery. Unless one is thinking of a drunken 63 year old Holden lying dead on the floor, the man was one of Hollywood's most beautiful male actors.

by Anonymousreply 138August 1, 2021 12:57 PM

I think many of the controversial choices here are men who had long careers and are probably more remembered in their later years when their looks had faded or worse. Brando, Holden, Lancaster, Cooper, Power, et. al. were all extraordinary looking in their youth but it's not how they're remembered for the most part.

There are very few men who lived long lives (and (more or less) kept up their looks: Paul Newman, Tab Hunter and Cary Grant come to mind.

by Anonymousreply 139August 1, 2021 12:59 PM

by Anonymousreply 146August 1, 2021 1:12 PM

R139, There is no "controversy" about the beauty of double-eyelashed Tyrone Power.

And I beg to differ with your premise. I think most posting here are thinking not of the actors' callow youth nor of their elder years (not that Ty Power or James Dean had any, but still....), but rather of them in their prime.

Not fat Brando. Not post-accident Clift. Not a be-wigged Curtis.

by Anonymousreply 147August 1, 2021 1:12 PM

Obviously, R147. Beauty is always fleeting. Still, a glint of sunlight on the water creates a memory of beauty.

If the rule is "beautiful and never not beautiful," the the only possible options are people who died young. Or Audrey Hepburn (who still died relatively young at 62).

LOL. You almost had a point there until you included TONY CURTIS at the end, in your list of “beautiful” men. My LORD.

George Montgomery

The former Mr. Dinah Shore was 6'3" and 210lbs (well, in 1938 he was 210) and his major in college was interior design.

Exactly R152. Tony Curtis was beautiful because his facial features were perfectly proportioned? Not sure about that.

[quote] Exactly [R152]. Tony Curtis was beautiful because his facial features were perfectly proportioned? Not sure about that.

I have a blu ray of Trapeze, starring Lancaster and Curtis, and I can hardly get through it because all I want to do is look at Burt and the movie focuses too much on the freakish Curtis.

R153’s guy might be an example of a guy who was both handsome and beautiful. Though I maintain Lancaster was as well. Unless having delicate facial features is a requirement for “beautiful”. Whatever!

by Anonymousreply 155August 1, 2021 4:51 PM

R153, Prior to marrying Dinah Shore, George had a romance with Ginger Rogers and was engaged to marry Hedy Lamarr.

R157, George Montgomery became a hot daddy in his later years and a renowned furniture maker. When he used to appear in those Johnson Wax commercials with his open shirt exposing his hairy chest, gayling me was smitten.

by Anonymousreply 172August 2, 2021 12:00 AM

Clift was beautiful, but it’s Brando and Newman for the DL win. Brando was gorgeous whore with a complicated, free-wheeling love life and tropical islands flying about in the will; Newman was a handsome stud who remained fuckable until very late in his days.

Tight draw.

Brando was not that handsome. Better looking than James Dean, I guess, but not more handsome than a lot of the actors mentioned in this thread.

And Burt Lancaster had a complex sexuality to him as well—and was far more handsome and didn’t lose his looks as he aged.

by Anonymousreply 175August 2, 2021 3:38 AM

I don’t get Burt Lancaster at all. I admit his body was sometimes photographed sexy, but he always looked a bit creepy to me. I love his films though but just never fantasised about him.

My type is more Jeffrey Hunter but I’m left a little frustrated because his roles were never particularly sexy.

I did however find Brando sexy particularly in “streetcar” but he was so cute in “the men” too, the only thing that ruined was sometimes his voice and his way of talking. I think James dean was a bit like this too. Paul Newman was always rather sexy with his guy next door appeal and maybe it helped that media was not so advanced or maybe I’m too young to have paid much attention but thankfully he did not come across as annoyingly and overly exposed as Clooney for example.

Another beautiful looking actor that hasn’t been mentioned is massimo girotti in “ossessione” and even as the mature gentlemen in “theorem” also victtorio gassman in “il sorpasso” and “bitter rice”

I seem to remember Ettore manni also being incredibly sexy in tony Richardson’s “mademoiselle”. He was not beautiful but for sure he was sexy in a rugged animalistic kind of way (much like Brando is “streetcar” and girotti in “ossessione”). The film itself was very erotic. Richardson must have been in his element photographing his future wife Jeanne Moreau being seduced by the handsome manni.

by Anonymousreply 183August 2, 2021 12:23 PM

[quote]My type is more Jeffrey Hunter but I’m left a little frustrated because his roles were never particularly sexy.

His roles were never sexy because he wasn't sexy. He was pretty, but his sexuality was strictly low temperature and non-threatening. He was pretty. He was male. But he did not project masculinity.

He had the kind of sexuality that teen-aged girls saw - and felt comfortable with - in Bobby Sherman. And even Bobby Sherman couldn't do anything with it.

by Anonymousreply 184August 2, 2021 12:27 PM

I can't believe Guy Madison hasn't been discussed much on this thread. He was the first film actor to be called "BEEFCAKE."

[quote] There’s a long-standing rumor about Lancaster. He allegedly used the 1963 March on Washington to cruise for black booty.

I’ve never heard of a predilection for black fellows (I’m assuming you meant men and not women), but I don’t necessarily doubt it. He was also in attendance at at least one of Rock Hudson’s all-male parties that got raided by the feds, and Hoover had a file on him because he was a suspected homosexual.

I think he was likely bi with an enormous sexual appetite. Being incredibly fit does that to a person—nothing like being in excellent shape to juice your sex drive. He was always fit and did all his own stunts in all his movies. I also think he probably had some kind of sexual relationship with his gymnastics partner in his youth, pre-movie star days (when those nude photos were taken).

by Anonymousreply 199August 2, 2021 7:40 PM

Weren't Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis doing it at some point? I think Tony credited Burt with rescuing his career from B movie sandal and sword epics by casting him in The Sweet Smell of Success and Trapeze, both of which Burt had a hand in producing.

by Anonymousreply 200August 2, 2021 7:50 PM

I agree that the screen test of Brando in R69 is one of the most beautiful shots of a man in existence.

Some of these pics of George Montgomery are incredible, also.

R197, The man who took Jane Fonda's virginity when they were in college.

by Anonymousreply 202August 2, 2021 10:20 PM

George Montgomery in his1940s films looked like the perfect Arrow Collar Man, created by the imagination of JC Leyendecker. He was really too handsome (beautiful?) for a male movie star at that time. Hollywood wanted their men in the 1940s to be more real and craggy like Bogart, Tracy and Gable. Even Flynn and Grant weren't that pretty.
