Nancy Reagan would have turned 100 just under 2 weeks - Lets use this milestone to reflect ,reminisce ,bitch and gossip
Born July 6th 1921 and died in early 2016.
what are our thoughts on the former american first lady? Does the passing of time and the fact she has passed away mellow or change your opinion of her?
Do we believe the rumors she was in many ways the unofficial president in Reagans second term? We know Barbara Bush didnt get along with her but what about the other former first ladies? If her husband had failed to become President do we think the reagans marriage may have faltered? In a liberal town like Hollywood who were her friends?
Lets speculate ,discuss and likely be rather naughty!

Kitty Kelly was wonderful. She wrote the most awful things about her targets but was never once sued by anyone because she tripled sourced everything and suing her would have meant testifying under oath to deny her assertions.
She wrote in her biography of GWB that the Yale football team called him "purty lips" (and all that that implies) but not a word of objection was forthcoming. Nobody ever dared sue her.

Irene Dunne was the Reagan friend that bothered me most.
She was a hardcore delusional Catholic Republican. Yuck.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | July 20, 2021 4:58 PM

Dunne was another one. Many Old school Republicans were different animals than today’s elitist, racist group of deplorables. Not necessarily social snobs but up by the bootstraps types who didn’t get handouts from the government. But they had no problem sharing the platform with the hardcore ones like John Wayne, Adolphe Menjou, Hedda Hopper and the aforementioned Fred Astaire. Character actor Charles Coburn was a card carrying member of the segregationist White Citizens Council. Both Hedda Hopper and Walter Brennan were outspoken in their opposition to the civil rights movement. But Barbara Stanwyck refused to be separated from her beloved black maid who was refused admission to the hotel she was assigned to when on location for a film she made with Clark Gable. She also had one of her ranches designed by an African American well before it was deemed appropriate. So I am on the fence about her politics. But Ron and Nancy were racist as hell.

Someone had to run out and get her the right water during the ten minutes she stayed. As she and her entourage were leaving, a clerk said within earshot "What a twat." She was such a fascinating woman. SO vain and insecure, SO spiteful to anyone whom she perceived had crossed her. She was a cold stepmother to Michael and Maureen Reagan, and spent most of Patti's life furious at her (she complained in her memoirs about Patti crying too much and being too fretful as a baby!), yet both Maureen and Patti forgave her before she died and tried to be good to her.
She seemed so awful as a First Lady --so profoundly out of touch with most Americans, so snobbishh and elitist, so intolerant of criticism--that Barbara Bush actually looked good in comparison when Nancy left the White House. Only later did most Americans figure out Barbara was just as steely and spiteful, and just as much a ferocious Mama Bear with regards to her entire family as Nancy was with regards to her husband.
Nancy was a hypocrite with her big First Lady platform of her grotesquely misguided "Just Say N" campaign, since she was an inveterate pill-popper, and she failed at the only thing important she was ever asked to do as First Lady, which was to be gracious to Raisa Gorbachev at their husbands' summits. (To be fair, Raisa was also disastrously rude.)
