OP Reading this is just heartbreaking. I didn’t know 3/4 of the story. “Parnell molested Stayner the first night at the cabin. Parnell began raping Stayner thirteen days later, on December 17, 1972. After Stayner told Parnell many times during that first week that he wanted to go home, Parnell told Stayner that he had been granted legal custody of the boy because his parents could not afford so many children and that they did not want him anymore.”

Steven Stayner was told his family abandoned him at the age of 7 by Parnell after he was abducted. He stayed with that pedo for 7 years and even went to public school under a different name. He was naive religious kid. He definitely developed Stockholm Syndrome because he was so young when he was taken in and just accepted Parnell as his new father. I think he would have been eventually killed by Parnell since he was getting too old for that pervert's tastes. It's disgusting how much this poor kid was used and abused yet Parnell and the other adults who were raping him for 7 years straight never got convicted for anything. And his parents didn't press charges for the rape because they were too worried about their son being perceived as "gay". He still got bullied at school about it and developed a drinking problem and his father kicked him out. It goes to show how little empathy there was back then for male victims of sexual abuse and his dumb abusive Evangelical parents were failures with both of their sons.

He grew up to be pretty handsome and surprisingly good personality despite what he dealt with. It's sad he died so young and he left behind a wife and small children.

R1 His parents are trash for making their 15-year-old son who clearly is very uncomfortable and has PTSD to do a national interview like that and I'm sure it was 100% financially motivated. He was getting bullied for being molested and I doubt that helped.

Reading about this back when Cary was arrested, I thought to myself how bizarre and tragic that family was. Now I'm convinced they were actually extremely fucked up from the get-go, with generational trauma and molestation, and probably the skeevy grandfather WAS somehow involved with Parnell, to lead to Steven's abduction.

I still feel for the sisters -- I hope they made it out somewhat sane.

I think it's telling that Steven was so willing to believe Parnell's story that his family didn't want him and he made no attempt to try to found out the truth as he aged. It makes me think Steven was already being abused and neglected at home and it was probably bad enough that he preferred living with his sexual abuser who at least gave him money, gifts and freedom. And given his siblings were so fucked up and how cold his parents were at his return. It's likely that was true. Both Steven and Cary were good-looking young men who were failed by their parents.

R27 7 is so very young and impressionable. I try to remember my thinking at that age…I would have cried and cried and then just healed and continued the business of growing up. I don’t think I would have been actively doubting this. I think he subconsciously did so when he was older, hence putting himself in a position where he was discovered.

That poor kid. The system really failed him. The kid was a hero and should have been celebrated. Now it would be different, luckily.

The mother is a piece of excrement to allow her child raping father to move in with them . She should I had a no contact provision with this demon. That’s probably why Cary hated women.

One of Cary’s victims was a classmate of mine when I attended Chico State. She was beheaded. It was very difficult to grasp what had happened. Shocking on a level that I had never dealt with before or since.

I believe the Stayner family was quite toxic and unsafe . I believe the grandfather was involved in Stephen’s abduction. Evil family. Yes, Cary despised his mother deep down
