I don't think he was gay at the time of writing. It was a convenient woke moment to declare he was long after the fact, though. Just like how they decided to make Hermione black in The Cursed Child. You can't rewrite history, but I guess making these subsequent choices that are aimed at making more people feel included/represented is better than nothing.

When I read the books many years ago I recall thinking that the subtext was that Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall were an item.
